what makes this amazing IS the fact that he's left handed it just doesn't have the the same feel when a right handed player plays what a left handed player plays in a right handed context its a no contest unless your truly ambidextrous. left handed Drummers are always extra crazy i.e. thomas pridgen, phil collins, derick McKenzie (jamiroqui), john Blackwell, gordon campbell buddy miles, simon phillips, Carter beauford, jellybean johnson ...there's a smoothness in odd approach that is impossible to replicate unless you're a phenomenal Drummer.

Not being a good reader I worked this out (RH lead) a few years back but never knew what the transcription was, so thanks! I use it loads, albeit nowhere near for as long as played during this example. The only issue with playing it RH lead if playing along here is the point at which he starts it. Great video, going to try and master it open handed now.

It seems like he would choose a sticking that has a single where the hi hat opens. I know he leads with his left hand. Believe me, I know. I kinda wish that I had learned that way. I’m a right handed cross handed drummer, like the majority of drummers out there and I found a sticking that feels better than the sticking Carter uses. Instead of using Carter’s sticking, I feel more comfortable using this sticking starting on 1: RRLRRLRLLRRL. Repeat it. With this sticking, you line up the left hand with the opening of the hihat. There’s a little six stroke roll in the middle of this sticking. That’s just me. Anytime I’m playing a complex sticking pattern, I always try to line up the open hihat with a single stroke instead of the second note of a double stroke. I hope that makes sense. I love Carter Beauford and DMB! I hope to see them for the 10th time very soon.

Thanks for this breakdown, I’d broken this down by ear and from UTTAD, but your decomposition helped crystallize it considerably. I can’t find a breakdown of Two Step, it sounds like a a pretty simple roll (2 stroke?), but it’s such a fun rhythm, if you ever get the chance I’d love to get your breakdown.

Great video!! Love it! Only one small suggestion..on the transcription of the groove, you've placed on the 2 hi hat with snare. But when you played the groove, the hi-hat is not hit on the 2 nor on the 4 💪👍 apart from that, all is great and thank you for the video!! 💪👍 keep up your excellent work!

Love this video. One note: you show the hi-hat being played at the same time as the snare (around 3:00) but this isn't happening because Carter is playing the quarter note snare and hat pattern with the same hand. Not the biggest deal, but I hope it doesn't confuse someone trying to play it exactly as it's been transcribed. I'm a new sub, a huge Carter fan, and this video sold me on your channel. Keep up the good work!
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 8 жыл бұрын
crap, I see that now... good catch. The full transcription is correct but I created the graphic for that section later when I was editing the video and I guess I just wasn't paying attention to the details like I normally do. Oh well, I'm not about to re-upload the video! haha... good eyes though
@rwebiscool
@rwebiscool 8 жыл бұрын
haha I don't expect you to reupload the entire video to fix that little detail! I'm probably the only who noticed - I'm an open-handed drummer myself and have always had to re-stick patterns, so I certainly appreciate your accommodating us on this video and preserving the genius of Carter's playing.

Austin, I just stumbled on your KZbin channel the other day, and have been hooked ever since. I enjoy your analysis and instruction, and your humor. I see the listing of your gear list and your kit sounds really amazing. What kind of resonant heads are you using on your toms? Also, do you tune your snare to a specific note, such as G#? It sounds really good. I've got a 6.5 x 14 Gretsch USA Custom 6-ply Maple snare but have been struggling to get a great sound out of it.
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 8 жыл бұрын
+Dave Yoder Thanks man. Right now I have Remo Emperor Coated's on the batter heads. And for the tuning, I never tune to specific note. I used to try that when I was younger but it was making me go insane so now I just try to get each drum to sound like I want that drum to sound. Trying to tune to specific notes and intervals between the toms and this and that... all that stuff will drive you nuts, but that's just my opinion... As for the snare, I tune the bottom head as tight as it can get without choking the drum out and making it sound "boingy." I also tune the top head pretty tight too until the drum stops "resonating" and starts "popping." One moongel on the top to dampen the high pitch ringy sound and keep the snares as loose as possible while still keeping clarity on the ghost notes... Hope that helps man!
@WhoWouldHaveKnown1
@WhoWouldHaveKnown1 8 жыл бұрын

If you're trying to build up wrist strength it can be beneficial. I would just think of it as a a physical workout, where you're really just doing simple patterns and focusing on building the muscles in your hands, wrists, and forearms. To play musically though, I would just stick to your favorite stick that feels good and allows you to execute your ideas most efficiently. Hope that helps!

+Jo. K. Hey man, that's a good suggestion. I'm still trying to formulate exactly what my focus is with these videos and so far I've just been breaking down all the coolest craziest stuff I like, which ends up being the more advanced material. I'll start being more conscious of incorporating lessons that aren't so advanced that more people can actually try to work on. I can't really say how or what that will be yet because I'm just kind of evolving with this thing on the fly, but I'll definitely be more cognizant of that as I make more content in the future.
