Married 27 years and every time I hear this song I get broken up, because I feel so lucky to be with such an amazing, strong, competent and, yes, beautiful woman who could have been with anyone but chose me! When I look at her, I still see and feel that glow exactly as you described! (Not that it really matters, but I’m a white man married to a black woman; her beauty attracted me, but I married her “for the content of her character.”) ❤️✌🏻✌🏻❤️

MTV or whoever had the one hit wonders the lady narrating it said that explain it that he saw this strange lady across the dimly-lit room, he only made out the red dress but from the distance he didn't recognize her but she was beautiful from that distance and he wanted to meet her and it turned out to be his wife. And they were separated at the time going through difficulties so yeah this is the song for his babe in red.

First, thank you for not constantly pausing. This is one of a handful of songs that immediately come to mind, when I think about a man expressing to his woman how much he loves her. This song always makes me cry and you can see why. I interpret this song as he has always known his wife, but tonight on this night of a party or dance or something, he "sees" her for the first time and his eyes have finally realized her beauty that has always been there, underappreciated. When he says there's nobody here he isn't literal he is saying that of everyone at this dance/party no one else matters and he is so captivated by her vision that it is all he can see and now, he can appreciate their love. And the hushed "i love you" at the end.... always gets me.

The way you described the imagery in your head listening to that is why I had issues with MTV when it came out. I always liked how great music took you on a journey in your mind. It was also interesting to talk to friends about songs and find that their image of the song was completely different as people will usually match songs to things in their own lives making the songs personal to everyone. I felt like the videos were telling you what to think (badly). I still kind of feel that way although I do admit there are some videos that were well done (Take On Me). Anyway, have a great weekend to anyone who read this far. lol.

While "The Lady in Red" was by far his most successful single (especially in the United States), Chris DeBurgh has 15 albums that are either certified gold or platinum (not counting live or compilation albums) as well as 42 charting singles (20 of them top 20) over a span of 47 years.
@bigk4755 Жыл бұрын
Chris De Burgh is better known for an earlier hit “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” which only (surprisingly to me) reached #34 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1982. You really should react to this song if you haven’t already. And yes, Lady In Red was a very sweet song, very beautifully done by CDB. I had actually forgotten about this, so I am glad that you reacted to it. Thank you. I loved your reaction as well.
@Vinterfrid Жыл бұрын
No, that is not correct at all. You cannot assume that America top lists reflects the opinion of the rest of the world. "Lady in Red" will forever be the song connected to Chris de Burgh.
@bigk4755 Жыл бұрын
@@Vinterfrid I never said that how CDB ranked for that song reflected how well it did worldwide. For instance in Australia “Don’t Pay The Ferryman” made it up to #9. I did use the Billboard ranking since that was the chart ranking that Angela was using. And for me, Don’t Pay The Ferryman was the song that I thought of first. Agree with me or not, I don’t really care. This is my opinion.
@jmarsh22 Жыл бұрын
@@Vinterfrid I’m an American and I’ve never heard of the other song he mentioned. Lady is Red is Chris’ best known song in America too. For him, Chris is better known for that other song, but not for anyone else!
@Vinterfrid Жыл бұрын
@@bigk4755 Correct - that is your opinion which you're of course entitled to have. However, you wrote that "De Burgh is better known for an earlier hit ..."I just replied that it is not correct. Agree?
@bigk4755 Жыл бұрын
@@Vinterfrid Chris De Burgh’s first album to chart was 1982’s The Getaway from which “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” came from. This album topped at #30 in the UK #43 on the US Billboard charts, and that song topped Billboard at #34. Probably responsible for this song’s success was the video that got quite a bit of airplay on MTV, which was a factor in how well known that song was at the time. While Chris had released 5-6 albums previous to this album and song, it was the popularity of the song Don’t Pay The Ferryman along with the accompanying video on MTV that first made Chris more of a household name, and led fans to dig up his previously recorded music. Several of his previous albums did chart after his breakout song and album charting fairly well, both here in the states and overseas as well. CDB’s song “Lady in Red” came out in 1986 (4 years later) on the album Into The Light. While the song got to #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 here in the US, it hit #1 in 25 different countries. The album peaked at #25 here in the states and #2 in the UK. While Lady In Red did better in chart placements, his first song to become widely known in the US, and basically around the world was Don’t Pay The Ferryman; and that to me is the song that I think of first when I think of Chris De Burgh’s music. You can justify your beliefs anyway that you want, but actual history and timeline speaks a slightly different story. And apparently for my memories I am a little biased towards that song that first broke CDB out as a known artist. If you didn’t hear about him for several more years then it sounds like you were late to the party.
