One of Evert's best matches. Beating Martina on grass using the wood racket when Navratilova had only 2 losses on the year. Not enough is said about this match.

This match was Chris Everts biggest win against her rival on grass - a GS final. It was spoken about during their days on tour. Martina returned the favor in 84 final at Roland Garros. This was her only win in GS final on clay against Chris. It is odd how even that worked out

Chris playing with a wooden racquet beating Navratilova on her beloved grass in quite a feat. Chris' racquet looks like it weighs about a ton compared to Martina's graphite racquet...

Chris was old school and used to weight her racquet with lead weights. There was a view that ground strokers should have a very heavy racquet to generate more power. It works when a player has time to really unload on a ball, but the racquet is harder to weild when vollying or having to adjust quickly.

In this match, Chris proved that sharp, deep groundies and smart approaches to net on short balls could neutralize Martina’s game, even on a fast surface, even with a wood racquet. It is more than quite astonishing that Navratilova proceeded to hammer Evert 13 consecutive times over two years following this loss. Yeah.

Wonderful to watch Chris Evret play her biggest rival in the late 70s& 80s Martina and WIN she won the final only twice in Australia 1982 & 1984. ❤😊
@jayowens63832 ай бұрын
Fun fact: she only played it six times. Each time she played it she either won it, or reached the final. 74, 81, 82, 84, 85, 88.

Great match, I'm so glad that Chrissie,along with her wooden raquet,got retribution for the 1981 loss to Martina,when she was down 5-1..fought back to get to 5-5, only to lose 7-5 in the third..A "Great" match with two "Great" Champions!

Their rivalry in my opinion were the matches before and including this final 1973-1982 and then 1983 1984 were all Martina then 85-88 Martina won 11 x to Everts 7x . Martina’s dominance over Chris really stems from the 83,84 seasons where Martina beat Chris 13 straight times with loss of only 3 sets. Chris said herself that Martina’s best was better than Her best but who can produce their best more often. Before 82 Chris would in general. From 83-88 Martina would although Chris made a huge comeback improving athletically (took 2 yrs of off court training in 83,84- those matches were played to gauge Chris ‘s progress and Both were improving at same time until Chris caught up in 85 to win twice and give Martina more competition. Martina maintained her number one ranking by only one set- winning the third set in AO final in 85. 86-88 Martina had edge over Chris but by 87 Graf was number one. Two great champions .

How did Evert hit that pass at 1:02
@damiencampbell8320Ай бұрын
Chris was hitting it harder with her small wooden racquet than Martina was with the big graphite

How on earth,AO was played on grass court?
@damiencampbell8320Ай бұрын
AO was always on grass until moving to the new Tennis Centre in 1988 and playing on hardcourt.

1982 an odd year in that Martina dominated the first half of the year, winning the French Open and Wimbledon, but Chris won the last two grand slams of the year at the US Open and here at the Australian Open (then held in December). In fact, Chris would make it three in a row at the 1983 French Open and waw playing to win the non calendar grand slam at Wimbledon that year. Apparently Martina didn't take this loss well. No doubt it inspired her in 1983, where she lost only one match the entire year.

An odd match tactically from Martina - staying back a lot. I think some of that was the influence of her then coach, Renée Richards, who felt that Marrina staying bsck behind her serve took away Chris's damaging return of serve. Martina also used that tactic in her family's loss to Horvath at the 1983 French Open, and it costs Renée Richards her job. Martina then began her coaching relationship with Mike Estep, who encouraged her to attack all the time.

I like the way they patty cake the ball big difference from today
@jpeyton886 ай бұрын
No patty caking-hit the ball cleanly with beautiful classic strokes. I coached for years and gave my number 1 a wood racket. After a few games, he asked how did anyone ever hit the ball with a wood racket. You had to be so much more precise.

Oversize composite racquet vs regular size wood. Totally unfair. I played club tennis during this era and the racquet changeover screwed up everything for a while.

So I love Chris Evert and I'm so glad she won this final but.... What is going on here? Martina is staying in the back court on grass??? She's trying to out rally the greatest baseliner in history. Shes not playing her game and its obvious that's why she lost this match. Its bizarre to see Martina not being aggressive on grass which was her dominion. But still a great win for Chris
