Tim and Chris Rock look concerned when Chris Farley stumbled his line at the end but split second later smile with him. That is true professional work.
@mandiemag3 жыл бұрын
Tim Meadows was the absolute best choice to kind of “chaperone” and flow with Chris instead of just doing the lines and making things awkward if he slipped. He went through improv with Chris for years before Chris came on in 90. I can’t remember if Tim came with him or was one year later, but the point is they did well together no matter HOW bad off Chris was. Chris Rock didn’t come from Second City, but he did come on with Chris in 1990 and they were together more than even Farley and Spade at the beginning. That was strategic and it worked great. And Farley certainly wasn’t “unfunny” it was just that a visible toll had been taken. And honestly at the depth of heroin addiction, if he hadn’t been on anything at all he would have been way worse off. It’s always backwards from what people think. Kurt Cobain was “sick” filming their Unplugged concert (and subsequent amazing album) for MTV. Because he was trying to get sober and stay sober which is what everyone thought they wanted. Until they realized that the withdrawal was causing the flu symptoms and the heroin had been keeping his unbearable and never properly diagnosed stomach pain at bay for so long that they didn’t realize it. So if he was calm and not shaky and eating and singing steady, etc, he was actually on something, not the opposite. So someone went and found some heroin. He takes enough to feel better and boom...can perform. Only people that have had to take care of an addict or have been one themselves know these things. That’s what people mean when they say they can’t stop. It’s do the drug or lay at home for weeks and almost die or go to treatment. Intervention is no good example of addiction in America. It’s the people trying to support their families and keep going that they need to profile. Not only the mooching, thieving complete degenerates. What was originally supposed to showcase a “worse case scenario” became a non existent standard. So the people that really need some guidance out of the cave are left to figure it out for themselves because they somehow still pass as “okay” or as someone who can’t be helped because they haven’t hit rock bottom. Whoever came up with that rock bottom thing....no. Just no. Someone who can still function in society is perfect for rehab. They just need to know it’s okay. I don’t want to say Chris was hopeless because I know how many people tried, but he obviously had deeper rooted issues that no one had figured out how to address or treat yet. He was probably just effing bored. And had never had to wrestle with the need of a physical addiction before and honestly was probably pretty pissed off about the fact that he didn’t feel in control of it anymore. And that whole 33 thing. He was OCD so you’re either in control-overdrive or you’re not in control of anything. So he would definitely have had things he told himself, and I can fully see one of them being “If I don’t die before I turn 34, then that means I’ll make it. And if I do die at 33, then it was supposed to happen.” Then he feels like he’s covered everything under this big blanket of tempting fate, and he can allow himself to be out of control because que sera sera. He has to feel like he has not being in control under control, or like he has an insurance policy on it.

@@mandiemag So many accurate things in this message. Layne Staley's unplugged performance is also notable for this subject given how pale and sickly he looks in it. I think I read that he had to shoot up right before the set in order to get through the performance. The stuff you're saying about OCD is also spot on. I have a milder form of it, and the control vs out of control balancing act you describe is the most accurate depiction of the experience I've ever heard other than by myself perhaps, especially the "Not being in control under control" concept.

Everyone who's a Chris Farley fan should read the book "The Chris Farley Show". I'm at the part where they talk about this cold opening and having read about it, this isn't funny at all. It's actually really sad. He could have went on to do great things. He was going to be the voice of Shrek ffs and was recording for it. RIP Chris.

The "it's hard to help someone that doesn't want it" line sounds judgmental and dismissive (not saying YOU mean it this way). People could want help but the help that's available doesn't work for them (like cancer treatments that don't stop the spread of some cancers). Maybe the kind of treatment that's become standard for addictions... doesn't solve the core problems that drive a lot of people to use drugs.
@HelloGudbye932 жыл бұрын
Someone who personally sought help for his addiction *seventeen times* just in the final 3 years of their life alone "Didn't want it?" 🙄 He passed almost thirty years ago and yet the language around the actual illness of addiction is so ridiculous, judgemental, and uninformed.
@ElitistNUMBER1 Жыл бұрын
@@HelloGudbye93nobody willingly gets an “illness.” Drug addicts willingly put that shit in their system. So excuse him for making it obvious Chris Farley wanted to abuse those substances.
@HelloGudbye93 Жыл бұрын
@@ElitistNUMBER1 so emphysema from chronic smoking isn't an "illness" either. Neither is cirrhosis of the liver as a result of willful drinking. CTE, repeated concussions or torn ligaments aren't illnesses because athletes "chose" to play dangerous sports of their own free will. Right? Thank God what is medically and scientifically classified as illnesses aren't up to the discretion of dumb fucks on the internet with a 3 grade understanding of reality 🙃

If anyone has heard Jim Breuer on Opie & Anthony talking about this night and the horrors of show business. They had Chris Rock there because they were afraid Farley was going to OD or drop dead at any moment. Farley also had a nurse with him on set checking up on him at all times. This footage is brutal. I’m actually surprised SNL has it on their KZbin page. I’m sure this is a dark moment for the cast, production, and everyone involved that night.

To be honest I wonder if his success, and jokes in those films are to blame about the struggles he had. It was just one big cycle of people making fun of him, or his weight. Granted, with films like Tommy Boy/Black Sheep, I'm positive him and David Spade were best friends, but just imagine being so popular because jokes are about You or your weight. I imagine it destroyed him inside being only known for those sorts of things. :(

Not just being repeatedly cast that way, but then you have fans always expecting you to be THAT guy when they meet you. It's a life in which you can never come out of character, so he escaped it with the powdered sugar. That's a difficult thing for many well known actors. The Office fans tend to expect Steve Carrell to be like Michael Scott in person, Jim Carey to be Ace Ventura or The Mask, Will Ferrell to be the goofy dude, etc...Reality is though, they are not their characters.

FYI. I read in "The Chris Farley Show" (Farley's biography), that they had to cut the cold open for the first time ever because it was about Chris's breaking rehab, which turned out to mirror what was actually going on in his life. They wrote it without knowing he was actually going through major relapse. For the first time ever, they ended up airing all the syndicated shows going directly to the opening credits. I was looking for that cold open, but couldn't find it.
