Since some years ago, with the internet development, a new type of choral practice arose and has been increasingly successful: the “virtual choir”. In 2016, we included in the Academic Choir of UFJF (Federal University of Juiz de Fora) repertory a work originally composed for virtual choir: “Water Night”, by Eric Whitacre. In general lines, it means that each singer records their part at home and sends both audio and video to a central station which, in its turn, is responsible for edition. Everything online.
As well as other many choirs around the world, we always sang “Water Night” as the traditional way, that is, during in-person gatherings. Recently, with the impossibility of gathering during the pandemic, some singers of ours launched the idea of producing remotely built videos, as the virtual choir way. So, we decided to accept the idea as the Choir main activity during the social isolation period. This playlist, including "Counting Music", by Chris Lawry, is a sample of how our work has been developed.
It was planned for 2020 first semester ending a commemorative concert for the 5 (five) years of the Academic Choir of UFJF. So, we started to work in what would be that concert repertory, although under virtual choir perspective. The repertory includes the group’s trajectory highlights since its creation and was chosen by voting among the Choir singers. We believe that, till the beginnings of July, we will start to publish videos of that repertory with all the Choir participants.
Although the choral repertory construction brings many technical difficulties, there is a characteristic that will never be found in in-person choirs: time flexibility for rehearsal, as that isn’t necessary to schedule a specific time for all the singers to gather. As a result, our group has grown from the usual 25 singers to 44 in less than a week.
As it is also an Extension Project, our group is NOT restricted to the Music Department students, but receives also people from the community, as well as from UFJF staff and other department students. And, further than being an Extension project, the group assembles 3 Professional Training projects related to Composition, Conducting and Vocal Technique.
