Her grandfather was the founder of Westboro Baptist, and her mother is the face of it. The extreme courage it took Megan to leave that disgusting place is crazy. The bravery of Megan is so astounding, and her open-mindedness is beautiful. ~~~~~~ EDIT: hi reader! 2020 Me here, coming back to visit this comment that 2018 Me published. If you're about to read the replies, please heed caution, as some of them are very rude and ignorant. Some people do not realize that a person leaving all they know behind to stand up for what's right and to pursue a more loving, open, and intelligent life path, at the expense of losing all of their family, friends, and possibly causing harm to themselves if people from their past want revenge, truly is a form of bravery. 2020 Me still agrees with 2018 Me on this specific lesson--- that people CAN change, but admitting you were taught/believed wrongly, and abandoning your old life is difficult , yet doing it makes you not only brave, but also humble. Have a good day :)

To not only accept her own mistakes, but also the flaws in the belief system of her own flesh and blood, the very people who brought her into the world, must have been incredibly hard. Me neither. I'm a pro-life activist on Twitter and I get insulted and demonized on a daily basis by radical pro-choice people who disagree with me. I wish all those people were like this woman: open-minded, non-judgemental and willing to just listen to me. If they'd just let me bring up my point without already assuming I'm the Demon, all those hour-long debates would be so much more enriching for both of us. This lady is probably one of the wisest people I've heard in a long, long time. I wish I were like her.

Gaby Champion lets not get carried away though. I'm not going to let anyone tell me what I can do with my body...sorry it's just disrespectful to dictate what what women can do. Not everyone has your religion it's not fair. I understand you might feel bad with people being mean but some people are tired of having people saying what we can do with our own bodies. If you don't want an abortion, don't get one! That's super cool if you don't want one. But mind your own business and worry about yourself. I agree after a certain trimester it's too late for an abortion but if it's early enough it shouldn't be yours to dictate :/ there's a difference between trying to understand the westborrow church people and someone telling me and restricting my rights and reproductive rights as a women. As you might know having someone tell you what you can do with your body is really terrible ): treat people the way you want to be treated. Just keep in mind that it's really rude to tell what others should believe. Keep it to yourself.

I was *VERY* surprised when Megan left because, when she was a member of the Westboro Baptist Church, she was one of the most devoted, passionate, outspoken, and incredibly dedicated members. She was actually the church's planner, arranged all their pickets, and ran their website. Most of all, she was extremely hateful, prejudice, and acted just as evil as her mother Shirley. I’m a gay guy and at once felt so hurt by their malicious words. It's a miracle she changed and turned her life around. BTIsaac As an ex-christian, you really are making a generalization about a group of individuals who share a belief system in which varies and those who affiliate themselves with a political party in which also varies. Not all Christians agree with each other or act in the same manner because the messages in the bible come down to interpretation and not all Republicans support Donald Trump. There are christians who lean left and vote democrat, there are also republican atheists and republican gay individuals because people vote for more than just social issues. I don’t want to generalize you based off your beliefs, skin color, nationality, sexuality, etc, don’t do the same to others.
@micahadamson43096 жыл бұрын
@BTIsaac Woah, that's a huge generalization. I'm liberal and christian, they don't go together. Almont every Christian is not at all like the WBC members. Those cult members are actively going against what the Bible says, which can be summed up as love everyone (even if they disagree with you), treat others as you'd want to be treated, and be respectful and kind. They are much more important than a couple times homosexuality is mentioned in the Bible in a negative way. You're trying to write all Christians off as intolerant bigots, but maybe take a look at yourself. You sure are being very intolerant.

She is moral enough to admit her errors, apologize, and ask forgiveness. Now she is showing and teaching how she was led to her new understanding by the discussions with those who had no reason to care about her life but still did.

How often do you have to discover you're not, vindicating your safe assumptions over and over, before that heuristic needs changing, though?
@mdtexeira7 жыл бұрын
That question presumes that the assumptions are ever safe. Could it not be the case that people's inability to express the deepest aspects of their reality, either through a lack of depth of access or a dearth of the communicative tools necessary to pass the information beyond themselves means that you almost never actually 'know' the other person's position. In my experience, most people who come across as hateful, once they've opened up are far more wrapped up in fear, much of it rational, if misplaced. The real question is whether the assumptions, true or not, actually improve the communication in any meaningful way. Ultimately, if you are sure of your assumptions such that you're not willing to extend the benefit of the doubt, aren't you really just engaging a time-saving protocol? You are filtering out, using assumptions, experiences that you don't have the inclination to sort through because they are superficially similar enough to suggest functional equivalence. In that case, the best way to save time is just not to engage them at all. In the end, I think she did an excellent job of recognizing that not everyone has the time or inclination to try and bridge ideological divides. If you are inclined to assume that your assumptions are safe on the basis of the discoveries that you inherently filter through those same assumptions, you might not be the person to attempt what is most definitely challenging work of building bridges.

Side note: The Westboro Church came and protested my theater group in high school because we performed Rent as our musical. I was a senior and I’ll never forget the signs they held up, so hateful and mean. They weren’t allowed on property so they had to stay across the street. We stayed on our end and sang “Seasons of Love” to them instead of yelling back. ❤️

@ViddyMan13 жыл бұрын
@@timetoreason181 This extends beyond theology; political divide has become the new religion - this video is my gateway share to friends and family who are so entrenched in their tribal beliefs that they've stopped listening to other people - it extends WAY beyond traditional and cult-like religion, it extends to actual thought itself, to tribal thinking, and as she mentioned most relevant today, political discourse. It's all just ideology and dogma in its extreme, no matter what side you're on. If you're not humanising or listening to the other side, or worse being emboldened in your own position every interaction you have, it's a symptom of a sickness, of the bigger truth you can't see yet - that you're not listening.

Westboro Baptist Church picketed my cousin’s funeral. The things that they shouted as the service was taking place were horrific. The hate they spat at his children was unforgivable. A good man’s funeral. A man who served to protect his country from enemies foreign and domestic. A man who deserved respect for trying his best to be a good man. A man who gave his life trying to rescue other service personnel, men he didn’t know. It is good to see that a few of them will enter in to calm communication and even see that there is good everywhere. Ms Phelps-Roper says that sorry isn’t enough and sadly she is correct. My memory of my cousin, a gentle loving man, is tainted by what WBC members did that day. Rather than his smiling face, his laugh, his pratfalls to make others laugh, his soft voice, the light in his eyes, when I think of him I can hear the hate that they screamed at us. Their joy in his death and our distress. Their pleasure at the disruption they had caused. Their enjoyment at the pain and suffering of the children, his children and others. The worst bile came from the WBC children who received praise for the most disgusting and disturbing insults and statements - these were things that a child shouldn’t even know never mind say - and these insults were aimed at the children present. Children attacking children. Several of the children and some of the adults had nightmares following the WBC attack, two of the children still do. There is nothing that will repair the damage they have done and still do too regularly; and I am sorry to say that I will probably never be able to forgive them and in this I know I am not on my own. It is good to see that some are not so far gone in their beliefs that they can start to see the people of the world as both good and bad. Sadly for those of us who have had their venom spat in our direction many may never be able to forgive because we will never be able to forget, but it is good to see that change is possible.
