A couple of people are commenting here about CLA in a negative way... the guy is a genius at what he does and if you hang around anyone on this level, most of the time, they are doing what they do without thinking. They are going mostly on their instinct so its hard for someone like that to analyze and have to explain what they do. So... give CLA a break. He's a busy guy, he did not have to make time for this but he did and I'm grateful. Its also quite evident that he absolutely loves music. He totally values the art form. I'm glad we have guys like CLA that raise the bar for everyone. Thanks to CLA for that! And thanks to Warren as always for bringing us yet another informative and fun video. Peace.

@@Producelikeapro Chris summers in Maine near where his mom grew up (has since they were kids) and still has family here, where we live. He made time on his vacation last year to hang on the beach... with his girlfriend, mom, and brother Mark... We had a blast just talking life and music... That's the kind of guy CLA is! Love him!

I am feeling a little melancholy after this one. It was great to see his room, but I also felt like I was seeing an end of an era. Like Bing Crosby on the phonograph, we had CLA in his studio. I don't think I'm ready for that. Here's to many more years of him doing the great work that he has always given us and thanks to both of you for the inside look.

This is by far the most candid CLA interview on the internet. It felt like we were in his living room, talking about the craft and how it should not be forgotten. I personally feel very strongly about the history of recording and the craft itself, I want to learn everything about it so this particularly resonates with me. Thank you Warren, your videos are gold, and thanks to Chris for being so open and honest.

Hi Warren ! Well to be short, I recently started to record an EP with my best friend in a studio we know for a long time but now... A sound ingineer came in ! so we record with him and it blows my mind away every single friday evening for 3 months now. I'm recording the drums tomorrow... And well I got myself some gear at home and I learn everything by myself so it's slow and every single little achievement is another little rock on the bridge. Thanks for sharing all this stuff, it's amazing and I can't tell how much I'm learning and how grateful I am to you !

I love the work Chris has done with waves. These days, his plugins are basically my get-go when I get an idea and need it recorded quickly before I forget it. CLA Vocals in particular. I create a vocal track, slap the cla vocal on the insert and I'm done. I don't use it for final recordings because I love to play around with different plugins (and I also have some hardware units I love), but I'm pretty sure that if I did, it would sound better then when I mix it myself
@Producelikeapro9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Michael Maple Wonderful! Yes I love his plugins!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
@triniticoclough63876 жыл бұрын
I mix and compose for Tv and Film and yes My knife and fork are THE CLA PLUGINS!!! say what you want but for some reason for me the CLA2A just works...yeah if I had the hardware of course the hardware cant be beat but I'm not assed out as I have the next best thing! Chris said something that made me think...The unique thing about a console is that each channel sounds a lil diff from the next so you get slightly different sonic textures by default with a console such as his SSL. I wonder if there is a way to mimic this slight variation of channels using a DAW. With our Daws every plugin will sound the same way or render the same results. Maybe Warrant can do a video showing 2 channels accessing the same inset but revealing slight differences between the 2 channels alone! This can have a very beneficial effect! Also Chris using his digital tape machine on his videos. He uses this due to what it does to the audio sonically! The magic of his sound is his method and then of course its art!
@kytul5 жыл бұрын
@@triniticoclough6387 the desk emulations by plugin alliance/brainworx does that exact thing. Mimicking the difference that component variation changes how each channel sounds. Also there's some good tape plugins out there, my favorites are from softube and black rooster audio. all these have demos so you can check them out free. Just be sure to use proper gain staging with them.

Fantastic video~! Warren, I love your channel and have for a bit but I just stumbled on this video. This unbelievable spread of zillion dollar equipment here isn't what makes me keep watching your videos, but the fact you cover everything from recording in a bedroom to just chilling with Chris Lord-Alge. And everything in between. I busted my ass to have a decent 16 track setup with nice 500 series pres/eq/comp, a good board and Logic for the DAW... and when I watch your videos, it makes me know that it was worth it, and I can still make amazing music, same as anyone, anywhere. Warren! Yet another awesome video giving us all insight into what every Producer/Engineer knows or should know, that weather your CLA or an absolute nobody that essentially we are all doing the same job. It doesn't matter if you're recording U2 or a demo for a nobody local band, it's all the same. You give 100% no matter what, you create and collaborate bringing the artists vision to fruition. Even if you're on a 4 track recorder or 200 channels you give the same level of professionalism. I truly used to see interviews with CLA and found him arrogant, egotistical, self absorbed then the more I got to know him I find him to be an amazing talent with a quirky sense of humor. He's a top notch mixer and everything I can learn from him is a blessing because he gives so freely. Anything you want to know, his "secrets" to mixing and producing he gives. He'd give you the shirt of his back and ask if you need anything else. I've learned more in the last few months than I have in the last 20 years! Thank you Warren and CLA for giving back to the art form. I don't know if it's possible to make a living in today's musical environments or not but thanks to you guys I'm going to try to. I am aware it's a big uphill slog but I'm willing to try again after being retired for the last 10 years or so. So much has changed but I'm encouraged by you Warren, you give me energy to create and the info to keep competitive in today's music biz.Thanks again Warren you are a real mentor to and many others also thank you CLA for all of you're wonderful info. God Bless you my friend. Cheers Mate!!! Stay Marvelous!

I've noticed this trend among engineers that have been doing this for a long while. In addition to obvious deterministic decisions (rooms, tuning, mic selection, etc.), they all use EQ and compression going in, before it ever gets captured on.. well, pick one.. tape or DAW. CLA has mentioned this being a side effect of growing up in the business where there wasn't really any choice. But he also says this is how it "should be" done. This advice itched a bit. I've always approached this from the other perspective, where I like getting everything I can into a track, and then I'll work on taking what I need from that later. After all, you can't un-compress those room mics later, if you find you were too heavy-handed. However, I'm working on a project where I'm not in the producer + engineer role, and it's a little unsettling to have that same approach now. The rough mixes don't sound like what I had in mind, and I find myself very anxious to get to the point where the tracks are settling in where they should in the mix, so I know whether the takes were any good at all, or if we chose the right snare drum, or whatever. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm starting to see the merit in this point of view, even though it's foreign to the way I've always thought about tracking music. I feel like this is one of those lessons that you probably find that you learned along the way, once you're looking back over a span of time, but weren't always aware of along the way.

Thanks for the great comment Nick! Exactly! Committing to the right sound is just like committing to the right part! One part shapes another, it's also hard to be creative when you don't have s specific direction! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren!

My first album I didnt know shit so I recorded to my DAW and released it. Later I bought my first tube pre amp. And Chris is right. If you spend the time to EQ, and compress at the beginning and focus on your Mic. Then just use the plugins for minor tweaking and fine tuning the mix you end up with way better quality final results. Plus it uses less system resources.
