Rick, knowing there's a fire smolding deep down in CLA, tosses a gallon of gasoline on CLA: "Chris, what do you think about people on laptops that call themselves mixers?" ...then Rick sits back with his virtual popcorn and watches CLA lose his goddamn mind. :D Rick is a genius.

I loved that! I can't remember who said it but I thought it was a great line; "Everybody with a laptop and $100 in software is a music producer with their own record label and a KZbin Channel." (or something to that effect.) There was a lot of wisdom in his response/answer.

I call this my caveat...(updated) I did not care for the attitude I thought it was unnecessary . Young talented engineers can learn allot from the veterans if talked to with a bit more respect. I might be misinterpreting his intentions and also let me be clear I respect his vast amounts of knowledge and best practices he has earned from actually practicing his craft.

I am not being bitchy, I want to make a point about sitting still for hours and being overweight. CLA is, like many engineers and mixers obviously overweight, I am too. I hope that people will consider the pitfalls of sitting at a desk or computer screen for hours on end. I had a DVT and resulted in Pulmonary Embolism which nearly killed me!!! It came from lack of movement, and has nothing to do with age. PLEASE listen to me... PEOPLE, be sure to stand up and walk around every 30mins or less, take some exercise too. You can spend years honing skills as a musician, producer and mix engineer and ignore the basics of being human... you must MOVE and MOVE OFTEN 🙏❤️🎸 x Love from London 🇬🇧 UK x

Vice Squad - Well said! You and I share the same story! Last year I spent hours and hours continually sitting while working on a project with a deadline. I ended up with a severe DVT, which likely would have been avoided with occasional breaks to simply walk around a bit. It’s not that I was being lazy, but was simply too focused and locked in on what I was doing to realize what harm I was causing. Beware, it can happen to you!

I frickin' hate that whole "remastered" phenomena on Spotify. Seems like every album is being remastered. Often by some bozo - in the sense that he/she doesn't respect the original. And overall I feel the original mix is **part of the song** - so remixing (and remastering) it, is often a horrible idea. A new production, IMO.

I heard CLA said some really out of touch things before. If you are a PROFESSIONAL mixing engineer (ie, you work in a studio and not in your bedroom), than yes, CLA can have some good advice, but hearing him talk about how he does a mix in 3 hours, without telling you he gets pro tracked, edited and ready-to-go tracks, is an indicator he lives in his own little niche world and has no idea how most people who watch these videos do things in real world these days.

@TheStevep52

Wow, great interview Rick. Chris tells it like it is. I'm an old school engineer who learned in the 70's in a studio with a 16 track MM1100, a 20 input custom console made from Langevin modules and only a few pieces of outboard gear (1176, LA2A, Pultec EQ). For "effects" we had an EMT 140 plate. The mic selection was damn good (251's, U47, KM84's, 421's, RE20, 44 & 77 ribbons etc) but everything was by hand (pre-computer & pre-automation). But we turned out good recordings and mixes. I was fortunate to have learned from Bill Bottrell so I had a good foundation. I didn't stay on that path (went into film/TV post) but in the last several years I've been getting back to my roots except now with Protools and plugins and I'm glad I had the old school background. Hearing Chris candidly share his thoughts is very refreshing. By the way the plugins I favor are his Waves CLA signature series. Now I know why I like them so much.

I can't imagine sending a mix to CLA with any post tape eq or compression at all....... And I'd probably leave reverbs off things too other than room mics. When paying for a guy like this you are paying for his expertise in getting the mix together. So I would send him stuff as raw as possible, I'd edit comps together and do all that stuff first, but I'd leave the mixing to the mixer.
@BeauStephensonVoiceActor

I mean, the producer and artist need to make lots of creative choices. If you just send him something with zero decisions made, then that makes things WAY too open-ended creatively. Direction is really good. He'll take it all the way to the moon if that's where you're pointed.

He makes an excellent point about committing to a track rather than saving every iteration or alternate take “just in case” - this just makes a huge mess imo. He also makes a great point about the potential mix difficulties of tracking in segments... that if you construct verse segments, chorus segments, etc, in isolation, putting them together can create problems if you don’t have the final arrangement in mind. Better to re-record front to back performances that don’t create unnecessary “seams” that you have to stick or edit (or punch in) together after the fact to make them flow. Interesting to hear his perspectives. He’s smart and opinionated, and obviously a great mixer.

42:43 “...sometimes a little reality goes a long way. “ That just about sums it up. Artists don’t pay the mixer to blow smoke. They need the truth, even if it stings a bit. There’s so much riding on a major label release. Oftentimes, the can keeps getting kicked down the road until it finally lands on the doorstep of the people who have to tell the truth. And that’s usually the mixer and the mastering engineer. CLA is still at the top of his game because he delivers hit mixes, year after year, regardless of the prevailing musical trends. And that is something that I can respect. Great interview, Rick.

I haven't watched a single comment, but I have to say this.. Being an audio engineer in CLA's world is very hard to be if you're not a privileged, rich kid with a network from childhood. It's definitely not comparable with Military ranks. I've heard better mixes than CLA's, made on laptops with headphones. I respect CLA, but I could never respect the disrespect towards lesser fortunate people. The console his behind is worth more than most of ours lives, and that's not proving anything other than access to money. AAAAND also, I totally agree with the over compressed unlistenable rant he had. That was my own biggest problem. I was so determined to make sure it hit the highest RMS possible by the modern books, but it never sounded like I wanted. I need the 70's type of dynamic.

"Mixing is a vision..." Lord almighty that's true. Sliding virtual faders and saying the word buss doesn't give you cred. I only 'mix' my own stuff. I have no cred. I have a vision of what I want to hear but to CLA's point, I ain't earned it yet. I haven't put in the time. I'm ok with that. I just enjoy doing it to my own stuff and learning. Great interview! Adding to CLA's favorites, I'd add Kansas 'Leftoverture' (Glixman/Evans/Marino). For a rock record in the 70's, it was just so well done.

I really respect CLA but I think he got it all wrong about ITB mixing. We do have different flavors. That's what modeling is about. Also, experiment with saturation and distortion can make a stock plugin compressor sound amazing. In my opinion is not about the tools. It's the imagination and the ear. But saying pretty much that ITB has limits is a perspective of a guy that never understand this world. Sorry CLA, stay on your awesome analog world and let us, the digital guys, do our magic :)

You should take the time to watch the various videos of Chris mixing in the box (on mix with the masters especially) and then come back and tell us that he's a guy that doesn't understand that world! The man actually betters the same mixes that he's already done on his analog gear, quite a feat!

I kinda got that vibe from him too. I don't think he can say anything to Tchad Blake or Andrew Scheps cause those guys got it goin on too. He is a bit stuck in his world, but is great in his world! He did say he wants the best of both analog and digital and if he really took the time to figure out that ITB mixing can, in fact, accomplish "real OJ" also, he might do more of it. I think he kills at what he does the way he does it and doesn't want to spend the time it takes to make the plugins sound like the console. It can be done, its just different, and it takes more work to get it there...work figuring out what tools do what, his workflow is automatic at this point. I've watched a couple of his ITB mixes and he usually needs his assistant to move him around the prog where on his SSL he's off and running, but he knows what he likes to hear...its his job and it works, why mess with it if you don't have to... sorry for the novel comment, but its technology, I have seen 1st hand many people that don't quite get it right away and don't wanna take the time to learn it and figure it out. There's a reason his "Protools rig" is setup on his assistant's side

funny is that analog DO have lots of limits, that's why it should be so special, pretty ironic right? Digital used to be cold, flat and super dynamic, untouched. In the early days it could be overwhelming, now it's as colored / special/ hands on as analog, but it's a whole different approach. I can understand if you love and learned the analog way, you could hate or not believe digital can work. but it does :) superbly

I was a second engineer at Cherokee Studios in Hollywood from 1987 ..... on... CLA came in with Holly Knight ( look her up if you are not familiar with her work- shes amazing). I had been a recognized 'puncher' at Cherokee for a while. Helps to be a musician to punch in and out with those old analogue machines. ---Cherokee used Otari 24 track machines at the time they have a weird delay that is 'musical' but tricky and really frustrating if you have been 'punching on ie: Studer 800 etc... I got the best compliment of my life when he asked me to punch when we were recording Holly's vocals on that record--"Holly Knight" on Columbia records I believe. Great interview!! Attitude is just how I remember it! what a privilege

Maybe CLA and other big names out there can't live with the idea that the world has already change. They would never accept that technology and easy access to information has put many people with a third of their experience at a close mixing level. Now you don't have to mix on a 250K console attached to 100k outboard gear to get a really good and pro mix, it's hard and threatfull for what remains of their business.
@JamarConley
@JamarConley 5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to mix on a console with outboard gear, but no one is getting as good as mixes in the box as CLA is out of the box. I believe that CLA can make the same great mix in the box but to say people with a third of their experience can get close is a joke. You can get a good mix in the box, but anyone with good ears could tell that there would be a difference in analog and digital. Digital can't do what analog can do but analog gear can do most of what digital gear can do. The best music made was in the analog ages and that will never change. It takes more experience to run an analog setup than a digital one so how is being more experienced and knowledgeable make their job threatful? I can't stand people like you that act like digital is the greatest thing ever but would trade your setup and life to have CLAs in a second. Analog will forever be timeless and what the digital worlds be working to emulate for decades but still can't get an exact emulation of analog in the digital world. I love digital workflow because it makes it easy for anyone, but there's nothing like running something through analog gear and getting a natural sound while taking a load off of your computer. Digital is limited by your computer while analog isn't. You don't have to update your gear because your OS no longer supports the connectivity or software version. So think next time before you make a terrible argument with no supporting facts or points.

@@JamarConley Nobody is discussing CLA mixing skills, I am not talking about digital vs analog neither, you are blind and you should read more carefully. We are talking about PRO MIXES. Years ago only a few people could afford a rec studio or mixing engineers, now thanks to technology making and recording music is way more affortable and easy for everyone. Can u do a pro mix in the box? YES U CAN. Does the digital mix will reach todays music standards? YES .Do you think spending thousands of dollars a day on studios is still the music standard? NO .Have u heard a lot music studios went out of business on the last decades? A LOT.. Do you still think this is not threatfull to their business? Even CLA has said he dosen't have the volume of work he use to have. Why do you think the reason could be genius... And yes, easy access to information has made a lot of talented young people reach a pro level on different music aspects and mixing is not the exception.

@@israelbonnard I'm definitely not blind. But if I blind then you must be a Idiot because my grammar and punctuation is better than yours. You don't even know when to use a question mark and you want me to take you serious? If we're talking about pro mixes than what you said is contradicting. You never needed a console or outboard gear to get a so-called pro mix. It's obvious that you're saying you consider a pro mix one that was done on a expensive console with expensive gear. So I'm not sure that you even know what point you was trying to make. You asked me all of these dumb as rhetorical questions and than insisted on answering them for me. Who are you supposed to be? It makes sense that studios would shutdown. What business stays open when there's no longer any demand for it? Technology has evolved a lot and it's going to keep happening. If you're good you can a pro mix using almost anything. Why would they come up with digital if you couldn't get a pro mix using it? You can incorporate analog into the digital world as well as the other way around. How is it threat if studios are becoming rare? Learn how to spell before you try to comment something people are supposed to take serious. Threatfull?
