Potter has HUMOR, one of the very best attributes of BeBop. Dizzy was one of America's funniest guys. Parker joked too. Music that makes you chuckle is good music. Coltrane got serious, which was necessary too.

+Alfred Madere - Hey thanks Alfred! It seems like listeners here mostly pay attention to the name! Chris is great of course. He even plays on one of my own CDs. But listen to this rhythm section. It's a great one!! I've played with everyone from Stan Getz to Stanley Turrentine to Joe Lovano to Kenny Garrett to Benny Golson to Don Cherry to John Abercrombie to Bill Frisell to Maceo Parker to Fred Wesley to Tony Malaby to Vusi Mahlasela to Tony Allen to Toninho Horta and on and on but nobody pays attention!! Sad that many people are so name oriented!! I hope we all learn to listen better!!

I was a teenager in 90's SC, trumpet player, heard about this Potter fella and figured he was that standard "topnotch sax player in your state "...years later he becomes one the great tenors in the world. South Carolina deserves no credit, but regardless I love bragging about where this kid hails from.

cool little improv licks in the bridge, and is very clear so great to play along with to learn the song. Been using this recording to get it down on alto sax, and I'm now playing it at about 280 bpm, so getting much closer! Wish me luck everyone, this shit is hard

Uh guys???? All you guys "judging" Chris's style--traditional, like it, don't like it, whatever??? THIS IS FROM 1998--THE PLAYING. The post is from 2010!!! Believe me, he evolved tremendously in that time, and has clearly cemented himself as a Master Tenor Saxophonist with what he has created in his sound now, and evolved. Check out Underground. Check out The Dave Holland Quintet. The guy has, as all jazz players traditionally do, Paid His Dues--mastered Parker for saxophonists--and this is an example of that. What he's doing NOW--in 2015--I have yet to hear. I'm into about 2010-2011 with his Body of Work at this point--alot to listen to. But his work with the aforementioned, Dave Douglas and others is Truly Progressive in the time since he mastered this Be-bop Standard. Thank god he's still around, with the untimely losses of Michael Brecker and Bob Berg--yeah, I said it--right there with Josh and Branford and Lovano and all the other Post-Coltrane guys. The TenorMan is alive and well!!

This is the sh*t. Stunning command of the entire instrument. I'm a tenor player ( or at least thought I was was until I heard this) and am duly awed. Some fellow musicians kept telling me "You gotta hear Chris Potter!"...wow, now I know why. Incredible phrasing, timing, ideas, range, tone....need I go on. Love it when a new voice enters the fray and just completely stands out with a unique voice. Not easy to achieve.

Great playing, great tone, sound; who cares if he's sounds more 'traditional? Even if you can hear more Dexter Gordon or some traditional cat in his playing here, Potter is his own man and he can get well into Henderson, Coltrane, Redman when he feels it suits the occasion. Don't get me wrong, Brecker is one of my favorites of all time. But when talking about 'modern', let's bring in Gary Thomas into the fold, and mention Steve Coleman and Greg Osby for Alto sax modernism - all great players.

Does someone understand the phrase at 1:00? I analyze it as Abmaj9, Dmaj7, Dbm7 Cm7(b5) E and Amaj7 over the last 4 bars. But, That’s hard to explain over the Rhythm changes...
@samepstein2 жыл бұрын
-Motifs I noticed in this 4 bar phrase: starting or ending arpeggios on the 3rd; also playing Maj7 arpeggios from the leading tone, and from the tritone, as a dominant to tonic resolution. -I see the Abmaj9 as an Fm11 arpeggio starting from the b3, then the Dmaj7 arpeggio gives you 3 #5 M7 #9 over Bb7. -You can think of Dbm7 as Amaj9, a tritone sub with a major 7, over Eb7 leading to Ab7. Again he plays starting from the 3rd (C#). -The Cm7b5 descending arpeggio outlines Ab9 (the actual chord there) arpeggio descending from the 9 which again resolves to the 3rd, (C). -He slips in the 3rd and 5th of a D minor triad over Dmin7 on beat 2 of the third bar. -The E major arpeggio descending from 3 -1 -5 -1 outlines a G7b9 sound which fits the chord there nicely. -The last bar sounds more like F7 than BbMaj, with an enclosure around the leading tone A, then the Amaj7 arpeggio leading to Bb.
