Great melody and arrangement along w/the words. Chris Rea wrote this song as inspired by his sister's (Paula) break up with her boyfriend. Song was intended to be sung by Al Green, but I'm glad he didn't do it. Chris Rea knocks it out of the park w/this release in 1978.

Should be the national anthem for every young girl who had her heart broken. My niece experienced her first 'lost love" recently. I told her to give this song a listen and pay attention to the lyrics. She will figure out in time that she was much too good for the little bastard anyway.

I would suggest Janet Ians "At Seventeen" also. Both great songs.

Mervyn Celso "At Seventeens" even sadder since it talks about the disparity of attractiveness you learn early in school where eventually differences in wealth and education will also be barriers in a class system

It IS the original. Been listening to this version since '78, when I was 33. Lyrics and arrangement with that beautiful string section and bass sets the mood for this classic about unrequited love. No problem for me to have moist eyes while listening.

This is the radio edit of the original. There's a verse that's been edited out, mainly to create a shorter cut for the AM radio that still existed then.
@johnvandehey70023 жыл бұрын
@@actionsub Thanks for the clarification Mike. It was the radio version I always heard, so that's what I was comparing it to. You're a music detail guy like me. I like that. I'm 76 and been watching & listening to the pop sounds since Bandstand in 1957, through Soul Train in the early 90s, and past then, but it's been spotty for the last couple decades as the songs and music have changed for the worst IMO . . . . . Lyrics in verse form below. Chris' unique style in this version omits key words for effect. Some of his other versions seen on YT include the missing words. Dyin' flame, you're free again. Who could love ... do that to you? All dressed in black ... he won't be comin' back. Save your tears ... got years and years. The pains of seventeen are really only dreams, Save your cryin' for the day. Fool if you think it's over Cause you said goodbye-ee-i-yigh. Fool if you think it's over ... tell you why. Newborn eyes always cry with pain First look at the mornin' sun. Fool if you think it's over ... just begun. This teenage queen ... such a tragic scene. He knocked your crown and ran away. First wound of pride and how you cried and cried. Save your tears ... got years and years. Fool if you think it's over Cause you said goodbye-ee-i-yigh. Fool if you think it's over ... tell you why. I'll buy your first good wine, Ooh we'll have a real good time. Save your cryin' for the day. Newborn eyes always cry with pain First look at the mornin' sun. Fool if you think it's over ... just begun.

There was a time not so very long ago when it was acceptable to have heart ache from a broken heart, because one had been in love. 'who could love do that to you?' should be 'who could, Love, do that to you?' that way means he's addressing his sister, for whom chris wrote the song after she suffered her first heartbreak, as 'Love'. when you know the story behind the song, it's an even better experience. 'Fool if you think it's over- It's just begun, Love...'
@Mekratrig6 жыл бұрын
me not you Disagree; should be “Who could love, AND do that to you”. This song is unique in the way it leaves out words here and there. But effective, made me more curious about the lyrics (and missing words) than I would have been otharwise.
