My pops just started making it uncomfortable for me at 19 when I tried to start doing my own thing. It all about respect. That was still my father. If I wanted to drink smoke and come/go when I pleased I needed to get my own spot and I was paying bills, working and in college. So I bounced!...3 kids and 24 years later I lost the ex-wife to cancer with a 19yr old in college (boy) and a 15 yr old (girl) at home. Me and mom were still good friends. Our 24 yr old is a college graduate, married and doing her thing. I have to balance their (and my own) grief but I still have to lay down the law. It’s a fine line because I’m rough around the edges and never imagined doing this solo. I’ve Always been in their lives but they always had mom when they felt I was too hard. Now I know they can’t stand my rules but they were coming from a place of no accountability to now having to answer for their actions all the time. It’s hard but it’s for the better. Last thing I need is for any of us feeling sorry about our circumstance.

Linguists don’t call it AAVE anymore. The designation is African American Language (AAL) and it is considered a dialect (some would argue a sociolect or ethnolect). Although it has different rules than Standard American English (SAE) it is still English. It is not a completely different language.

The right way to do it is- courting without sex or spending overnight and when a marriage proposal is accepted or marriage is on the table THEN the man who is working and has a place of his own will have his woman move in after getting married. The Bible says it’s shameful for a daughter get pregnant in her fathers house meaning she is unmarried and in these streets . Little by little 1/3 of us blacks and Latinos will recognize the best way to raise our children and conduct ourselves.

I'd say try the military over a couple of years of college after high school. 1 reason is most likely you'll get a contract for 4-6 years (depending on what job you qualify for) and if you don't like it (cause stuff happens and that 1st term will go by fast) get out and if you still want to go to school after that, use your benefits and have the government pay for it all.

There was a story here in England years ago were a mother let her son drink ridiculous amounts of water thinking that water would not harm her child. But there is an illness called 'Hyponatremia' where the sodium and electrolytes are flushed away from the body due drinking excessive amounts of water which the child got and had to be hospitalized. Just a thought. Love the podcast. Jason
