The notable names here are Barry Rose, who was Chris' choirmaster when he was a boy (and who went on to become choirmaster at St Paul's Cathedral)! That must have been very cool to bring him into this project. The other is Andrew Jackman, who was in The Syn with Chris in 1967 (do some digging on KZbin if you're interested in hearing what THAT sounded like!) He and Chris remained close friends for years (he provided the string arrangement for Yes' "Onward"), until Jackman's untimely death in 2003.

Okay I know this is unbelievable but if you have the tech you can prove it. Jon’s voice slowed by 10% is Chris Squire’s voice. Don’t misunderstand. They’re two separate people and each has his own voice. But Jon’s voice is the same as Chris Squire’s voice but with a 10% offset. This is why their harmonies are so amazing to hear. It’s like overdubbing, but it’s not. Check it out. This is for real. It was an accidental discovery.

The parent album, 'Fish Out of Water' is the ONLY solo album from Chris Squire. He often plays the bass as a lead instrument, as he did for the entire record! Oh, and he almost exclusively played the bass with a pick, not his fingers. He was a tall man at about 6'4" and he had huge hands! I have been a fan of Yes since 1974. And because of Chris I attempted to play the bass for a few years, but alas, it wasn't to be. I did finally meet him after a concert in 2014, a few short months before his untimely passing the following year. RIP Fish.... 🙏🎸🐟 💙

Patrick Moraz' solo album at this time, "I" is very different and unusual. Very heavily polyrhythmic, almost like a "World music" thing about it. It's worth listening to, for sure. More interesting than the medieval knights and wizards and wives type of music Wakeman was writing anyway.

a great and under appreciated album - just fantastic! To some of your questions: drummer on this was Bill Bruford (in YES from 1968-1972) and keyboards is Patrick Moraz (who joined YES for Relayer in 1974 inbetween Tales and Going for the One both of which had Rick Wakeman on keyboards). It also had arrangements by Andrew Jackman who was a boyhood friend of Chris'. Finally - to Nick's question - YES was still very much alive when this was recorded. After Relayer each of the guys in the band did solo albums - Fish Out of Water (Chris); Olias of Sunhillow (Jon); Beginnings (Steve); i (Patrick); and Ramshackled (Alan). They would go through some lineup changes but not take a "break" until after 1980's 'Drama' and then they'd sort of restart with Trevor Rabin and 90125. And finally - this was the best of all those solo albums in my opinion and as you both sensed showed how much impact Chris had on the YES sound both in terms of structure and sound.

One note on why it sounds so much like Yes. Chris grew up singing in a choir and because of that he usually came up with the vocal harmonies for Yes, so his overdubbed harmonies on this album are from the source. It also doesn't hurt to have Bruford on drums and Moraz on keyboards to go with his distinctive bass. Great album.

Thank you for playing this session which was just wonderful! Despite being a Yes fanatic from their third album onwards, I somehow missed this solo effort. I knew of it, but hadn't gotten around to actually listening to it. Chris was the greatest and I loved the guy as I think everyone else did. You can tell from his playing he was a beautiful spirit. If it escaped your attention, the album title had a double meaning of being out of the Yes context and also Chris' Pisces sun sign symbolized by a fish and more typically seen as two fish tail-to-tail swimming in opposite directions. When Yes hit their stride, Squire seized everyone's attention with his extraordinary sound and playing. Chris literally caused Rotosound roundwound Swing Bass 66 strings to become enormously popular which I believe he first learned from his admiration of John Entwistle's (The Who) bass sound. The beauty of these particular strings is they have a very clean punchy sound and with right heart and soul, a ringing singing near vocal-like quality. Thereafter, a slew of famous bassists all switched to Swing Bass 66. But it was Chris who had a revolutionary impact musically with playing demonstrating great musical intelligence far beyond simply the strings he favored. Love these solo tracks which have a very gentle beauty to them. I feel blessed that I saw Chris and the boys in concert in Denver '75, late 80's Oakland Coliseum and finally 2015 at the Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN. It was at the Oakland concert Chris did something so memorable and special I've got to tell everyone. As was his custom, I believe Chris was dressed in white and at some point probably half way through the show, he raised his '64 white Rickenbacker vertically above his head with the head stock aimed at the ceiling. What he did was so absolutely original, he simply plucked a ringing single note in the four directions north south east and west beautifully demonstrating there's a world of sound in that singularity. So as the sound decayed to nothing, Chris made a quarter turn and repeated the same note until he completed the circle and paid tribute to all his fans whether they were behind the band, off to the sides or in my case, facing the band. Wouldn't you have to love a guy like that?! Chris was the heart of Yes and despite being in a band of musical giants, he was the rarest possibility, bassist as superstar. You can plug in Billy Sherwood or whoever you like and although they're very good (ARW/The Royal Affair for instance), cannot duplicate

Silently Falling is even better. Fun fact: My Mellotron is preset to play the intro on Hold Out Your Hand. Only need one finger depressing the key one time and it ends in 8 seconds.

Thumbs up guys. The drummer is Bill Brufurd on this album. The keyboard player is a childhood friend of Chris and some tracks were recorded on a real church organ in a church in UK. Very difficult to recoed as a church organ has a slight delay on attack. The keyboard player had to calculate that slight delay to be in synch with the band. I think this was the only solo album by Chris Squire God bless his soul. Keep it up you are doing a grat job darlings.

Love this album, especially side two. To answer your question at 12:15, after Relayer, they took a hiatus and all made solo albums. Steve Howe - Beginnings, Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow, Patrick Moraz - The Story of I, Alan White - Ramshackled, Chris Squire - Fish Out of Water

Lucky 7 is my favorite - the drums a the beginning are great. Bill Bruford on Drums and Patrick Moraz on keys - I think Andrew Jackman led the orchestra. I think this is the best Yes member solo album. Steve Howe's solo instrumental stuff is often excellent, but his singing isn't the best. Thanks for reacting!

Hi guys ! Wow ! Was not expecting this...Yes ! [ see wot I did there ? Lol ] ... I remember seeing this album and simply bought it the moment I saw it in the record rack....It has the best album title of any artist ever !!! Chris did a bass solo called "The Fish" and the live version on "Yessongs" album is utterly stunning. He is so famous for "The Fish" that when he went solo for the 1st time without "Yes" ...well .... what a title ...."Fish Out Of Water" ! Just brilliant ! ... and an incredible album....Ok I just typed this before even playing the video....I'm going to make a coffee and then relax and enjoy this with you both....back soon. X

Hi Jim, I totally agree with you on the bass solo of The Fish of Yessongs; I sent the CD to Nicknlex, praising exactly this song, because to me it's the best live bass solo I've heard ... so one day I hope to see or hear a reaction. Now I start to listen to this, never heard of it before ... probably I lost interest into Yes after 90125 ...

My all-time favorite musician. Period. Fish Out Of Water,to me,could stand up on it's own to any Yes album. It still rankles me that Yes wasn't admitted to the R&R HOF until after Chris' passing. Of anyone in the band,I think it may have meant the most to him.

They’re basically three members of Yes on this album. Bill Bruford, Patrick Moraz and Chris. There’s no guitar on this album except for a little bit played by Chris in Silently Falling. This is one of my favorite albums of all time! After the Relayer tour, the band went on a hiatus and each member recorded a solo album, then they went on the 1976 Solos tour and played some new music from each member. After the Drama tour in 1980, Yes disbanded, but regrouped with a more poppier sound along with new guitarist and songwriter Trevor Rabin in 1982.

Bill Bruford on the drums. Also Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz plays organ on some tracks of the album. Andrew Pryce Jackman (from Chris Squire's pre-Yes band The Syn) on the Church organ. Mel Collins (King Crimson, Camel, Roger Waters, David Gilmour) on the sax. Jimmy Hastings (Caravan, Hatfield and the North) on the flute.

Squire was a giant. Beyond the bass, his songwriting was wonderful. And...he is one of the most underrated back-up singers, not that they ever get rated...but he spent decades backing Jon. Their harmonies were great. This album is about all you get of Chris on lead vocals. This is a most cherished album, a one-off classic.

I don't know why I get still get so emotional and choked up listening to these songs. When I hear this, I realize just how much I still miss him. I've heard that two or three Beach Boys members provided uncredited guest vocals on "You By My Side", but I forget where I heard that or the details so I can't vouch for it as fact. (P.S. "You By My Side" was featured on American TV network NBC's show, "Good Girls" S2 Ep13, "King" @ about 23 minutes in.)

You're right about Chris' voice, how it blended so well with Jon Anderson's voice. In fact, I was shocked at how good Yes sounded in the 1980s when Jon Anderson left and Trevor Horn came onboard to sing for their Drama album. Of course Trevor didn't have the same range as Jon, but still, it sounded much like Yes. This is an amazing album, over the years I wore out both an album and cassette from listening over and over. And With You By My Side, you can hear Chris' experience growing up as a member of a choir. I really miss Chris and his incredible talent. Every song on this album is a winner, and in addition to these songs, I especially love "Safe - The Cannon Song" and "Lucky Seven."

So, after Relayer, Yes band members (Squire, Moraz, Anderson, Howe and White) decided they would make a solo album each and then perform aspects of each as part of the next Yes world tour. Fish Out of Water is Chris's. You can catch bits of the solo tour as bootlegs on KZbin (Yes Solo Albums tour). The band dropped lots of the solo material as fans wanted more Yes material... Moraz left and Wakeman rejoined before they made the next album Going For the One (which incidentally Moraz had drafted some of the songs - including some of Awaken). Check out the other Yes solo albums from this time. :)

During this period, immediately following "Relayer," Yes took a sabbatical while Moraz, Squire, Anderson and Howe all put out their own solo albums. It is revealing to hear the unique sound each member brings to their combined sound. The band reunited with Rick Wakeman after this on the band's next album release, "Going For the One." Patrick Moraz never played with them again, so this marks another period of transition for Yes. I highly recommend Jon Anderson's solo album, "Olias of Sunhillow" which came out during this same time period. You can clearly pick out what flavors each member brings, especially the contrast between Squire's project, and Anderson's. "Fish Out of Water" sounds like Yes without Anderson, and "Olias of Sunhillow" sounds like Anderson without Yes. To my ear, the signature Yes sound evolved dramatically every single time a member left the band or returned.
