As a songwriter in Nashville, Chris Stapleton has written hits for Kenny Chesney, George Strait and Darius Rucker. As a singer, he once led the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, and more recently stepped into the solo spotlight with Traveller, his debut album. It's the kind of country record that gets better the more you wear it in: When NPR Music named it one of our favorite albums of the first half of 2015, critic Ann Powers compared it to a "soft denim jacket ... pulled out time after time, lending comfort, suiting every occasion, with treasure stuffed in every pocket."
It's easy to understand why other singers took to his songs - Stapleton writes lyrics that sound classic but never dated - but his softly creaking voice gives them the home they deserve. And even though those songs stand plenty well on their own, it's nice to have a little support. When Stapleton stepped behind the Tiny Desk to play selections from Traveller, he was joined by his wife Morgane on harmony vocals. Between patient, detailed songs of devotion to love, Los Angeles and liquor, they paused for banter about the summer heat in D.C. and the large number of guitars Chris owns ("Not supposed to tell that part," he said to Morgane).
Watch him hide behind a large hat, a beard and a battered vintage guitar; watch her smile at him during "More Of You" with a combination of admiration and affection. Like the songs themselves, their performance is full of private moments worth sharing widely.
Traveller is available now. (iTunes) (Amazon)
Set List
"More Of You"
"When The Stars Come Out"
"Whiskey And You"

I've been preaching for so long that when people say they don't like country music after listening to bands like Florida Georgia Line that they're simply listening to the wrong kind! I was raised on classic country and a great country song can be a balm to the soul.

Country music is no different than rock or folk or any other genre; it has many faces and many voices that appeal to many different people. There is tremendous breadth to "country." Much of it is popular beyond the reach of country radio stations, and that has always been true.

The world is too loud, and Chris Stapleton seems to get that. He's cool letting the empty spaces be empty, and Morgane flutters through those spaces like a buttefly, touching down ever so lightly here and there. They obviously adore each other. It's really very sweet!

This song is written, almost to the letter, of the painful life my husband and his father went through with his mother, my mother in law. She struggled with bipolar disorder and attempted several times to make all of her suffering stop; she felt she was a burden to us. She could not have been more wrong. However, on June 26, 2006, she 'fired away'; one gunshot wound ended her suffering, not knowing that our suffering would endure. Only 7 1/2 years to the day later, on December 26, 2013, my father in law's suffering from her loss ended when he passed from cancer. My husband struggles DAILY with the loss of both of his parents. Mr. Stapleton, if you should ever read this, please know that you music brought my husband to tears. He has stated many times that your music gives him hope and that "real country music lies within Chris Stapleton." Please continue making music, knowing that you are impacting the lives of many. Some are closer to home than others. May God Bless You and Keep You.

I love country music and i am a black chick reason being i grew up with it. In my house Willie played beside Cash, Rambos etc. When people say things like Chris is bringing back proper country i smile because every music genre grows and changes i personally don't feel much passion for what i call pop country some tracks are ok but country cant stand still i am glad that we are getting back to real songwriters again that make you feel something when they sing. There is one thing that i hope country does not get rid of and that's real love songs not just the mush of love but also the heartbreak nothing does that better than country.

I mean, they just don't embrace many black singers & it's ridiculous. I'm so sick of slick, generic pop country overall. Even Miranda gets "pop" at times. I guess Chris is gonna have to lead the charge & save country!!!

So many groups on NPR tiny desk put on a big production, lots of instruments, weird sounds, over the top performances just to stand out . . . but Stapleton proves that simple vocal and lyrical talent always win out.

When she looks at him it reminds me how June Carter Cash use to look at Johnny Cash.

Why does this music just give me the biggest lump in my throat ever. Hows it possible to be sad and happy all at the same time. First time hearing the second track and I love it.

This is not a joke. I was not a huge fan of Morgane’s. I thought it was more of Paul/Linda thing. Then, I got hearing aids. I’m enjoying these songs all over again with much greater appreciation for Morgane.

The fact that someone sneezes around 2:40, and Morgane waits till after the song to say "God Bless you" - just so polite with manners, I love her. Even though this was recorded way before covid ---- even "after" covid, I hear someone sneeze, I still say "Bless you" --- just polite manners. Just be kind ♥️
