Realism and negativity are confused more often than not. I hate it when someone calls themselves- with pride- a "realist" when really they are just miserable. I think people really do tend to thrive on negativity. Too many..... too many farts.

Though, you didn't put into mind that some people have trouble staying positive due to emotional disorders. Also, just because someone has a negative opinions, or a pessimist attitude, it doesn't make them a bad person. The flower is beautiful, but its probably a good idea to remember it has thorns so you don't touch it and prick your fingers.

I like that videos like this sparks dialogue within our community. I wouldn't have imagined people voicing their disagreements with Chris about this subject. Sure, we're kind of going beyond the simple message Chris is trying to convey, but this simple 2 minute video has got people thinking and caring about the deeper issues that affect "negative people." Ya'll give me hope.

Happiness about everything all the time can lead to ignorance of thing around you, but then too much negativity can make you look like a big fart. Big fart. I think Disney is too crowded and ice cream makes me fart, but I still like the two.

I work at a convenience store, and after greeting someone with a smile he turned back at me and said "wow, you're just Mr. happy, aren't you?" to which i replied "yea, there's no reason not to be." he looked at me for a second, looked me dead in the eyes and said "yes there is." and walked away. But i do completely understand your concern with the 'am i wrong' idea. I've always looked at it in a very entropic way. For every person that wants good, there has to be someone that wants bad. I know it doesn't solve whether or not you're right or wrong, but it does relieve you of any guilt you might have... your right is their wrong and their right is your wrong. We just need to learn to live with each other and understand that those are our views.

this reminds me of my brother. he has a habit of mentioning the negatives about things. if we're eating dinner and i say the food is fine he'll just say he didn't like some of it, not mentioning the rest of it which he clearly enjoyed.

i have difficulty seeing the positive in everything. being positive all the time just leaves you disappointed in the end. expecting the worst from everything makes things a pleasant surprise when they turn out to be good.
@I_can_do_20_push-ups10 жыл бұрын
In theory that works, but in reality I find looking at things positively allows me to roll with the punches, because as soon as something bad happens I can move on because I see something new and hopeful on the horizon. Pessimism is self-defeating, because as soon as something good is over, it's hard to imagine anything working out again. Your outlook becomes very bleak very quickly, which leads one to complacency.
@wilddogspam10 жыл бұрын
The trick is not to expect either of those things, actually. Expecting something to be bad is in itself a bad experience. While, on the other hand, expecting something to be good can lead to either disappointment or lessening of real thing in comparison with the ideal. For more on this argument, try Schopenhauer's Eudaimonia (the art of being happy).

There have been times in my life where I've hung out with people who are more "negative" than myself because I can understand how they feel and I don't want them to feel isolated. (I've dealt with depression myself.) But, I also have had times where I have to distance myself from them because it started making my own depression even worse. :/

I think you're viewing the subject of negativity from too much of a distance. It's never as simple as a certain person being "always a downer", underneath that negative outlook could be lots of hurting, despair, and insecurity. He/she could be coping with a mental illness, have been taught by parental figures to look at the world in a pessimistic way, or just be suffering so much from things you'll never even know about that could make someone want to give up on life. Just remember that a little negative comment about Disney World comes out of a person who has spent years having a set of life experiences that is different to anyone else's and forming their own thoughts and beliefs that would lead them to saying such a thing. It's not easy to understand a certain perspective that's radically different from your own, and I'm not saying that negativity is better than positivity, it's just that you can't really boil down someone else's downer outlook to "He doesn't like anything. What's his problem?". There's always more to a person than that. Also, what you brought up near the end of the video is called depressive realism. You should look it up if you're interested.

Deluding yourself is all a part of coping, which is healthy and natural for humans. That's one of the primary reasons religion is a thing. But yeah, i agree with you.
@jan.tichavsky10 жыл бұрын
What's healthy about having delusions? It's true they are natural but that's all for me. You can see depression as part of coping too but I don't consider it healthy.
@StephanieMaple10 жыл бұрын
Jan Tichavský Many people rely on religion because that's the only way to avoid depression that they could find (or, arguably, the easiest way that requires the least effort) and they prefer delusion over depression. They're probably the same on the health scale, no delusions are "healthy" per se but sometimes they're the only choice you have to keep yourself alive. The difference is that depressed people often know they're depressed, but do delusional people know they're delusional?
