Chris, I don't know if you read the comments on this at all but I thought you'd appreciate this story. I have a profoundly disabled four year old who cannot stand or talk yet. When I play this a look of bliss comes over her face and she starts dancing, nodding her head in time and clapping. Nobody has told her that Bach is posh so she just completely rocks out and gives herself over to the music.

Incredible. I've never heard anyone play anything like this on a mandolin so close to how the violinists execute, It's really incredibly difficult. The fastest I could ever get the presto is when I slow this down to .75 speed, and even then I can't play the whole thing really clean at that speed. It's just that I can realize how incredibly difficult it really is to do what he does. He really must be naturally gifted with those hands because his attack and dynamics, especially on the fugue with all those 4 note intervals, make it even more impressive. Thile isn't just a great mandolin player, he's a circus side-show freak he's so good. ~JSV

I've been studying and performing IV Presto for the past 5 years, and I'm still nowhere nearly as at ease with the piece as you are. I hope some day before I die I'll be able to give that song the respect it deserves and play it with your proficiency. You've always inspired me Chris -- thank you for continuing to do so.

A few years ago I played a bluegrass gig in the Texas panhandle at an old folks home with other students from South Plains College in Levelland Texas. Near the front of the lovely and very appreciative crowd sat an old man who held the hand of a severely catatonic old woman in a wheelchair. A very wonderful thing happened. As the afternoon went by, out of the corner of my eye, I kept watching the man because he was weeping. After we finished I spoke to the caretaker in charge and asked her about the man. She made a discreet inquiry and came back and told me why he cried. He was the woman's husband. A very loyal caring man who visited her every day. She hadn't shown any signs of sentience for about a decade but the nurse said when she heard the music she began to rock back and forth in time with the band. Then she smiled which she hadn't done for years. The man was crying tears of joy. Later, during the ride home, I told the members of the band. They cried too. Most rewarding gig ever.

Yeah, violin is on my list elaine buchsbaum. But first I need to get my vintage (early 40's) tenor banjo back from the shop (getting new head, calfskin, not synthetic), learn to play it, then learn to play my great-grandfathers Hohner accordion (30's I think) that I received recently. Then I need to practice my blues harp (harmonica), all the while continuing my guitar, bass and mandolin. It's a hard life as a muso who wants to do all parts himself, not as a band.

It's absolutely true. Bach wrote a lot of his music for the harpsichord, which doesn't have a lot of versatility in dynamics or tone. His music instead is in the notes. Shitty instruments are plenty good enough to express the notes, and high quality instruments like this mandolin are able to add even more expression, especially when played by good performers.

Composition coalesces into timbre. This is why a melody or harmony will add up to a 'sound' despite telling a discrete melodic story. All things musical create timbres. Therefore if you have really stellar composition, you will almost always sound good.

Extraordinary. I've watched this, now, 3 times in a row and my chin is still on the floor. Breathtaking not only in technique but in heart and soul as well. And, as astonishing as it is to watch his left hand working, his right hand touch is equally fluid and spellbinding. His dynamic control and precision of strokes - allowing the piece to breathe, rise, fall, and, ultimately, soar - are uncanny. Mesmerizing. Whew!

***** I actually disagree. Bach is one of my favorites, yet his works cannot really be called "Emotionally intense" as he was going for something else. A transcendent, eternal line expressed by sublime melodic & harmonic movement. It was to transcend the human emotive experience. Beethoven, or CHopin would be an "Emotional" experience. A different value system... different eras.

Omar Torrez While there is some truth in your statement, saying that Bach is not emotionally intense or powerful ( and just because he sprung out of an era) is a crude misunderstanding, it's like saying Mozart didn't write any profound music because he was a product of the classical period. While some of Bach's works dealt more with ( "how far he could play with modes to create one perfect structure" train of thought) he did write some of the most emotionally powerful music, as I'm sure you know this piece because he is one of your favorites, I invite you to listen again to the Chaconne from the second partita, knowing that he composed it in honor of his first wife, when he returned to Cöthen from a trip to find out that she was dead. " Transcendent eternal lines expressed by sublime melodic and harmonic movements" those can only come from a matured and profound emotional state of being.

***** :3 .. Their early work was a little too ... new wave for my taste , but when sports came out in 83 , I think they really came into their own .. commercially and artistically, the whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor... :3 In '87, Huey released this, Fore!, their most accomplished album, I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to Be Square" a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics, but they should !! , because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself! !! The general public seems to have a fascination with god-given "talent", as if it is in your genes and is handed to you on a platter, like a winning lottery ticket. Ask any master, from J.S. Bach to Charlie Parker, and they will tell you that with hard, smart work and indomitable dedication, anyone could achieve what they have. While both of the above mentioned masters said exactly this, I believe they were stretching it a bit, to make a point; that raw "talent" is much the smaller component of greatness, when compared to motivation, love for the art and plain old grit and elbow grease. I'm sure any master, in any field, including the great Chris Thile, would concur.

@@pathoscatz1 yes good point the slower parts are really harder to play on music like this with the mandolin then the faster parts -- to get it smooth (when you only have pick as contrasted to a bow which you can totally control the sustain) is the hardest thing by far IMHO.

Before I heard this, I thought, "...on the Mandolin?" By the end I wasn't conscious of the instrument or player at all - only the essence of the exquisite thought form we call the music of J. S. Bach.

Incredibly well done. Perhaps it's just me, but on the fugue the mandolin sounds exceptional because the double stops are more punctuated than on the violin. Doesn't hurt to have a natural genius like Chris performing, either.

There are so many double stops, chords, and arpeggios throughout the six sonatas and partitas that are written in a guitar style for the violin. One of the challenges for the violinist tackling this literature, in my thinking, is treating them as a guitarist would.

I am stunned and amazed by this man's musical ability combined with what can only be an unbelievable dedication to learning the intricacies of the master, J. S. Bach. Talent alone does not make a Bach impersonator - only talent and much (much, much) practice. That, plus a bit of luck and a real love for the tunes of Johann are what I hear and see hear.

Although I couldn’t find it on KZbin you should be able to find recordings of Jake Shimabukuro playing Bach on the ukulele. He’s the same level of musician as Chris Thile. There are performances of other music by Jake on KZbin if you’re curious.

His jam session buddies Edgar Meyer, Yo Yo Ma and Stuart Duncan are all master level composers and muscians on multiple instruments as well. How Chris these guys can memorize these complex sonatas and concertos is beyond me. Most masters still need to read the music, or at least have it in front of them!

@@bradleybellwether7927 they only have it in front of them because sight reading is the standard, not because they can't memorise it and personally as someone who knows pieces upwards to 30m,20m and etc long, its not really a matter of memorisation, when you practise these things a lot, it becomes muscle memory, you don't even think, you just play it when you've gone through it over 100 times.

Tim Heavner he played the Chaconne at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival last summer (2017). It has become somewhat of a tradition for Thile to kick off the whole festival with a solo set...just him alone with his instrument for 2 hours playing his mind numbing range of styles - including vocals. The Chaconne was perhaps the most captivating live performance I've ever seen especially given the scene...thousands of people all geared up for 4 days of wild Bluegrass music...in complete silence watching a savant up there. You could literally hear birds and the wind against the music.
