Chris Watts tries to keep his mask (a narcissist's false persona) firmly in one piece but in doing this he stands out. In this setting of an interview by a detective, it becomes easier for us to see his mask for what it is and it's a useful lesson to help us to spot the red flags of a narcissist.
I have a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and a post graduate degree in Counselling Psychology and I have done extensive research on narcissism and the effects of narcissistic abuse. I work as a coach specifically with people who have experienced narcissistic abuse. Let me know in the comments section below what video you would like me to make about an aspect of narcissism that interests you and please subscribe to my channel!

Tony Walton I was married to a narcissist who was a genius mechanic and could understand football plays and statistics like he was Rain Man. But the guy couldn’t really solve anything involving people, feelings, time, history, or thinking outside the box. He was especially bad at factoring in variables or predicting outcomes. He was incapable of forward thinking. I used to walk around thinking to myself that he was an intelligent idiot. He reminds me a lot of Chris Watts.

I was married to a covert narcissist for almost 20 yrs! Early in the relationship I knew something was wrong. And as has been said, leaving him almost cost me my life! Be careful, never confront them with what they truly are! Ripping off their mask exposes their vulnerabilities and is dangerous! Leave secretly!

Yes someone did. A friend of Shanann made a video, I can’t remember the title. It’s here though and if you look through enough Shanann videos you’ll find it. If I find it I’ll try to post the title here. She said at dinner with CW and Shanann one night, she and her BF ordered a milkshake to share. She got a piece of broken glass in her mouth from the shake, broken glass somehow ended up in it (maybe from a broken part of kitchen machinery), anyway this woman says she picks up on creepiness real well. As soon as she told everyone at the table she’d just nearly swallowed this piece of glass she took a quick look at CW and she said…he was smiling. Everyone else at the table looked concerned and were leaning in to look. He sat there with a slight smile until he then snapped out of it and began pretending to be concerned because everyone else was. And, Shanann herself saw his mask slipping but she didn’t realize exactly what was going on as well as she didn’t want to believe it. Oh and Shanann’s brother Frankie saw the mask slipping in N. Carolina. He saw the abrupt personality changes.

It's important for people to have some awareness of psychology in order to deal with and understand different personality types. I get the impression than Shannan had little knowledge of psychology, that's why she didn't seem to cotton on to who Chris really was. 8 years seems like such a long time for a normal person to be with a narcissist.

And you can tell he's frustrated that he can't get a read on the FBI agent, and he doesn't know what persona to present to make the agent think he's a great guy. He says, "I know you don't know me...and I don't know what your opinion is". Looks like he's trying different masks for Agent Coder. Chris is like Pennywise the Clown from IT.

So true - smart comment! From 09:25 was very telling, the way Watts made an impassioned (and quite ridiculous) statement about how he'd fallen out of love with his wife during 5 weeks away from her. Getting no feedback from an impassive Agent Coder he breaks off and says "Does that make sense to you... at all?" like a needy schoolboy, desperate for teacher's approval! And Coder replies: "The timing doesn't make sense". And Watts immediately shoots back "OK", and launches into an even more impassioned version of his, "I'm such a great guy... I did everything for my wife, even the laundry", self-pity party. Watts repeated attempts to manipulate a seasoned FBI investigator are so pathetic and doomed to failure, you can't help but laugh at them. The Watts interrogation video may just become required viewing for all would-be killers about what not to do in the early stages of a police investigation.

Live Abuse Free Well, I'm sure you've heard the news about CW's upcoming release of his recent interview. We'll all have another go round with Mr. Chris. That should be interesting, of course depending heavily on how truthful he is ... or isn't. I AM curious as to who set this particular ball into play. I suspect that it was at least started at his request. It also looks to me that the interviewers involved were specifically asked for, & may well have been the key factor in encouraging him to open up. These investigators share with CW a very unique connection under extraordinary circumstances. They may be the closest thing to a group of friends that Chris Watts has at this moment. Whatever HIS motivations might be, that his previous interrogators responded & have since been willing to "have their reputations tied into it" is in itself an indicator, I think, that they must feel there's enough merit to the things he says that it's worthwhile from their points of view. If, after the session(s) were done, they had any doubts to the results or the value of it, I'm confident they would've called BS long before now and put distance between them and the results. I think it's very likely also that they are THE people he feels most comfortable with opening up to. It's a guess, but on some level I think he likely STILL feels inhibited to make full disclosure to his "best friend", his dad ... and THAT in turn makes me a little more hopeful that he will finally make more of a full confession than if it all were tried only with his dad. His former investigators have the advantage of KNOWING lots of things they found out from him that he still won't feel free to open up fully about with his dad. Another big part of their advantage is that he cannot pretend for long to maintain his "mask face". With his dad, I doubt very much if that scary clown face of his ever came off in those conversations. Finally, his dad cannot pretend to be without personal & familial concerns within ANY of their interactions. With the investigators, on the other hand, they KNOW their professional reputations rely heavily on their specialized training, of which carefully maintaining their emotional distance from their subject. That being said, I anticipate the broadcast of this new information as much as anyone who has even marginally followed this horrifyingly SAD siutuation. AND I very much look forward to YOUR reactions & analyses! There are scads of KZbin channels which have swarmed all over these crimes & from as many approaches as possible, but yours has become the first channel I look for. You're really the gold standard by which to gauge the clarity & veracity of all the others. I appreciate highly the credentials & training which you bring to your analyses, and especially the calm, professional demeanor with which you treat the events and people involved must be mentioned in tandem . So please keep on keepin' on. I have an idea that we'll all meet up again after the "Big Day" on the 7th! P.S. - Wherever it is that you live looks absolutely gorgeous! It reminds me of my time on Oahu ... well ... ummm ... AGES ago!

YES! I'm glad you mentioned that statement. It really stuck with me not only because of how he said it, but how fake the emotions he expresses are like that. Everything is so exaggerated. No one is really "your light". He never says anything real like, I love them and care for them no matter how hard things get. He expresses distancing and fake dramatically adoring language that is completely just fake sounding (like in this instance). Something from a Hallmark card is the best way I can describe it. The doctor here calls it a badly written film script. He thinks if he speaks like this he can get people to believe it. Unfortunately Shann'ann did... But she had to feel distant since he can never express a real down to earth emotion that she can relate to.

As Shanann's heartbroken mother said, as she addressed Chris Watts in court, in her powerful Victim Impact Statement: "My daughter put a crown on your head". It's utterly sickening that Shanann's love and fidelity for this man was so cruelly and brutally betrayed. The only tiny comfort I can find, picking through the horrific details of that terrible night, is that Shanann may have known nothing about her children's murders. I hope not. She was a wonderful mother who clearly adored her girls. As one of Shanann's friends remarked, she would have chosen Bella and Cece over one hundred Chris Watts! I feel it is really important voices continue to speak out for the victims, Shanann and her babies, who no longer have a voice. I strongly believe Shanann would be outraged about Chris Watts' brutality towards her and their three children. She would applaud the LIVE ABUSE FREE channel for seeing through her husband's well practised 'pity party' and alerting people to the psyche and conduct of dangerous covert narcissists. He wore his mask successfully for years, playing on people's ignorance about the nature and motivation of covert narcissists. Ignorance is not bliss - shining a light on these dangerous people, as this channel does so brilliantly, will diminish their power to hurt and destroy others. Please keep up the good work in outing them - this could well save lives, which would be a wonderful legacy for Shanann and her babies.

@@glamdolly30 but even if she didnt know about the girls I think her thoughts as he was killing her had to be about her children..even if she did not think him capable of killing them even if he could kill her, she had to be thinking along the lines of "oh my God, what is going to happen to them?" And "if he could be doing this to me what will happen with the girls"? And maybe "no one will ever know he did this because everyone thinks he is such a nice guy and I have always talked him up". At least those are the things I would think would be going through my mind right after "I cannot believe my true love, my partner, is doing this to me!" I guess the best thing would be is if maybe she was not aware of what was going on! Did she take pain meds or sleeping meds for her medical conditions?

In Flawless Skin nothing is ever good enough for a narc. You can be the perfect supply and they will still devalue, cheat, mistreat, etc. I believe her excessive FB postings were a cry for attention. Behind closed doors she knew something was off but was in denial. She thought praising him publicly again and again would bring him back to the person she wanted him to be. It was just unbeknownst to her that person never existed. It was all an act and he was ready to move on to his next performance with fresh new supply.

Yes, he had surely been devaluing her, and in her videos she was trying to get him back to the "loving" person he seemed to be in the beginning, when he was lovebombing her to hook her. That's the biggest tell for me. He never asked what was going on with the investigation into the disappearance of his family. I think anyone whose family was genuinely missing would have been frantic. I "lost" my son twice in the mall. One time at sears b he climbed out of the stroller and sat under a circular clothing rack. He was about 2 feet away from me the whole time. He was almost 2. The second time I was at a store called Northern Reflections. I turned my back for a second and he was gone. I searched the store, it was a small one then w ran out into the mall screaming his name. Again, my little darling was only a couple of feet away from me. This time he climbed into the window display and was sitting in a rocking chair. It's funny now but the terror I felt then was horrible. He was such a good kid, but twice he scared the hell out of me.

In the Discovery files is a written report from a cop who rang Chris Watts on the Tuesday, to conduct a short interview over the phone. The cop noted in his report: "At no time during our conversation did Chris Watts ask me if there was any news or progress in finding his family". CW was so totally lacking in empathy and understanding of how a normal, loving family man would behave if his pregnant wife and kids were missing, he was incapable of behaving appropriately!

You're right: for a covert narcissist, no matter how much a person gives, it's never enough. Expecting praise and continual online gratitude for taking care of his own children is exactly the type of "my efforts are never enough/poor me" mindset that these cowards do not have the balls to express outwardly to their significant others. Instead of communicating like adults, they allow these feelings to fester into internal rage, expecting everyone else to be mind-readers.

It’s really sick and sad when people are trying to get subscribers, ads and donations over a family’s tragedy. Not to forget critical thinking Kay who is one sick woman. If you really want people to be critical thinkers talk about politics and people like Chris and other murders and rapists instead of putting down someone that is no longer here to defend herself. Some people are really sick when it is a fact from the Vincent camera and one of Shannan’s family members had to watch the videos that he killed all 4 of them. Although I do think his mother sister and the few friends they have are a big part of pushing their own narrative cause like Chris they are very good at lying to themselves.

Yes, it's very noticeable that he imitates Nicole and her use of the word "like" so often. No one else interviewed of his co-workers and neighbors used that word in that way, so it doesn't seem to be a regional thing. All he does is imitate other people; "there's no there, there" in him. Totally! Chris Watts' mother Cindy shows all the signs of being a major narcissist and she got her husband and daughter to support her constant campaign of sabotage against Shanann, the daughter-in-law she hated for usurping her in her son's 'affections'. His father Ronnie's response, in the police interrogation room, to the news his grandchildren are dead, lacked normal emotion. His overwhelming concern was to support his son, rubbing his back and eagerly leaping on his lie that Shanann had murdered the children. A clue to how the Watts family operates. It is obvious Cindy and Ronnie Watts would have loved it if their son's ugly slander about Shanann being the child killer, rather than him, were believed, regardless of the inconvenient truth that he killed them all! All the evidence suggests the Watts family are extremely toxic in their dysfunction. Their self-serving conduct, poor values and lack of integrity were the models Chris Watts grew up with. They contrast sharply with Shanann's loving family. That poor woman married into a bizarre, dangerous and sinister group of people and I feel when she did, her fate was sealed.

Trying to figure out how this handsome, easy going man can kill anyone created a cognitive dissonance in my head. Your videos have greatly helped me to understand what was going on in his mind. The right expression is "take a bullet for..." it is pretty dramatic though. I love how the Colorado police and FBI conducted themselves and this investigation. The way they interrogated him was flawless beginning to end, the way this detective sits there with him factually blocking his exit and cornering him, as crossed.. Perfect work

@@tessforbes8687 But they did ultimately get a full confession - Chris Watts admitted all three murders and as a result there was no need for a trial. CW only came out with the lie about Shanann killing the children, because he heard Detective Tammy say it first (she suggested it purely as a ruse to get him to give up the bodies). In another example of Chris Watts' inability to come up with an original thought, he seized on Tammy's narrative blaming Shanann for the child killings, as he saw it would absolve him of that heinous crime and possibly get him off a death sentence - he could even present himself in a heroic light, as a distraught husband who killed his evil wife in a rage at what she had done to the kids he loved. Unluckily for him, he couldn't get his story straight, even with Tammy's indirect 'help'. The first few times Tammy put the "Shanann killed the children" suggestion to him he hotly denied it, presumably because he knew she had not and he hadn't had time to work out the advantages to himself of this story taking root. When his brain finally cranked into gear and he asked for his father, so he could debut the Shanann-blaming story, he said she had strangled the girls when he knew he had smothered them and the autopsies would likely reveal that! Thank God covert narcissists like Chris Watts who think they are the smartest person in the room are very much mistaken!

Great video. The interview really does have his embedded confession as you describe starting with him revealing that he is not close to his children by referring to them as "those girls" and then slipping up and referring to Bella in the past tense and then suggesting that his wife and daughters may have been subjected "an act of evil cruelty". Wow. I agree with you that CW probably started saying "like" constantly in conversation because he was around NK and his mind (maybe subconsciously by this point in his life because he had done it so often) searches for patterns in other's conversation to imitate. He imitates others to fit in since he is devoid of normal human compassion and emotion. He was probably raise with severe emotional abuse and was not allowed to show emotions, make any decisions, have any preferences, etc. In that family, a lot of viewers on these forums have speculated that his mother is a malignant narcissist. Children of Narcissistic Personality Disordered mothers grow up to have problems because they were not nurtured and not allowed to mature and develop their own personalities. Depending on the severity of the mother's disorder, the entire family can be completely structured around catering to her and reflecting back to her what she wants. Children of these types of mothers are hyper observant of reflecting what others want and fail to develop a healthy self esteem and sense of self. CW has the emotional age of a small child. He no doubt carried out what was expected of him as a father but resented the kids acting like kids and getting all of Shanann's attention. Her expecting him to pull his weight as a parent and not praising and thanking him enough would absolutely make him unhappy and pouty. I think you have him pegged right. And, I absolutely agree with your take on Shanann's public posting of videos extolling the virtues of her husband. It is a very odd thing to do and is a red flag. Either she made the videos because CW was in one of his pouty fits and she understood that she needed to make a grand gesture to bring him back on-line or she feared he would get violent. I think she was also trying to convince herself that her husband was wonderful because she was seeing behind his mask and she was deeply troubled. The neighbor, Nate told the police (all on police cam) that he and his wife heard the Watts couple screaming and arguing and that CW was particularly violent in his yelling and arguing. He was tired of her and the kids and his life and needed to make it her fault as narcissists never take the blame for anything and usually have a sadistic need to blame others and see others fail.

I appreciate your thoughts on his comments about taking a bullet for “these girls”. I have two daughters and this case is extremely difficult for me to think about. I used to think I’d do anything for my girls (take a bullet etc) and then I realized how meaningless that is. It’s a overly romantic hypothetical situation that will never happen. If I were willing to do anything for my girls, that means I’d live my life to raise and protect them. This is so sad.

In all of your videos I feel you hit the nail on the head as to Chris and Shanann's relationship and what made Chris Watt's tick. You've put everything in perspective. I was married for 30 years to a man exactly like Chris Watts, but fortunately for me I was lucky in the end to escape death. Shortly after my divorce an article on Covert Narcissists (which I'd never heard of) landed in my face book news feed. It described my husband to a T. What an awakening for me! My ex is such a covert narc, that his accent changes to the accent of those he's speaking to. It'll change right in front of your ears lol but sadly, so many people are soooooo blind to narcissism and sociopathy. It makes me sick because a lot of victims of their abuse are being re-victimized by the court system as there usually isn't any evidence to show. Judges only consider evidence of physical abuse and that's usually IF you have an expensive attorney. Been there done that and I was punished for trying to protect my 2 babies.

It turns out that we mimic accents in order to assimilate ourselves with others and create empathy. We unintentionally mirror others when interacting by copying the other person’s gestures, body language, tone of voice and accent, in order to bond with others and feel safe in social interactions. This is called the Chameleon Effect and it’s embedded in human nature. There is even a part of the brain dedicated to copying this behavior. It’s a natural tendency that we don’t often realize we are doing and if you are a person who is more influenced by other’s behavior (a high perspective taker) then you are more likely to display the Chameleon Effect.

I don’t know if this is true of a narcissist but if he can’t take the blame, then someone will. He’s discarding his family. But he don’t want to go out as the bad guy, the one who cheated. Shannan blames him for cheating. He can’t handle that so he kills her. It’s not his fault, it’s her fault. He can do no wrong. So he holds them in contempt. He blames the kids knowing that they will blame him. Just my thoughts. Wasn’t he getting mean with the girls the last week? And of course Shannan. So yeah. He was holding them in contempt. Towards the end he did despise them. Hey, is that the true Chris that people are saying is the bad Chris. The real Chris? The Chris without a mask? What does that mean? Are they really ugly nasty people? But they hide it?
@glamdolly30
@glamdolly30 5 жыл бұрын
@@bonnielee7134 Yes, I think Chris Watts absolutely despised his family, once he had decided they were an inconvenience to him. Shanann's parents witnessed his cold conduct towards her and the children, at a time when he must have decided he would soon kill them. They were catching glimpses of the real Chris Watts behind the 'nice guy' mask he had worn so convincingly all the time they had known him. The disrespect with which Watts treated their dead bodies reveals his hatred for them. The squalid 'graves' he chose were no accidental, collateral damage - they were a visual representation of how he felt about them. Another, excellent LIVE ABUSE FREE video discusses this. He threw Shanann face down into the dirt in a shallow grave, pregnant in just a T-shirt and g-string, her backside facing upwards. He crammed his little girls' corpses through tiny hatches (such a tight fit, that Bella's buttocks bore deep scratches, and some of Cece's blonde hair was ripped out and found clinging to the hatch door), listening out for the 'splash' as each tiny corpse hit the toxic crude oil within. Those TV interviews he gave, with the memories of killing his wife and children and callously dumping their dead bodies fresh in his mind. And he keeps breaking into smiles... the horrific images he must have been re-playing in his head as he parroted that dumb phrase: "I have absolutely no inclination where they are". He knew exactly where they were of course - he knew full well his wife and unborn son lay dead in a shallow grave, and his daughters each lay alone in their fume filled 'coffins', rotting in crude oil. Chris Watts never loved Shanann or the girls, as a sociopath he is incapable of love. But while he was getting sufficient rewards from them, he was happy to act out the role of devoted family man. It was a short-lived part - by the time his eldest child was 4 he was ready to move on with a new woman, and jettison his old lifestyle in the cruellest way imaginable. For an extreme sociopath and narcissist like Chris Watts, human beings are only there for what he can get from them. And when he has no further use for them, he regards them as literally disposable. He knew Shanann would outsmart him in a divorce - and crucially, that she'd shame him to their family and friends, revealing how he left her and the girls for a floozie when she was pregnant. Plus a divorce, with 18 years of child support for 3 kids, would be heavy on his pocket - murder would pay him out through their life insurance policies. Shanann, Bella, Cece and Nico died to save Chris Watts money, and to save his face. It's about the most horrific betrayal of people who loved and trusted him as you'll ever find. Chilling!

Gina Powell I do not believe they thought she was not guilty. I think they did not have enough evidence which would have to be her telling Chris to kill his family and how to do it to find her guilty. I don’t think she’s that smart but smart enough to talk about that in person and not over text messages. She made it very clear she wanted to be number 1. When the detectives brought up her name Chris said something like leave her alone she has had a hard life she’s a good person. What was so hard about her life. The average person would of shed a lot of tears when talking to the detectives knowing what he did. But she bashed Shannan telling them she was bossy per Chris she said he never raised his voice with her or Shannan per Chris and we know that’s not true cause the neighbors heard them arguing. I saw a crime on ID channel and the truth did not come out for years that the mistress was involved. I do not think she was their but I think she had mental issues and with his kids she would never be number 1 and for her that was one of her big hang ups. But then again she knew he was married with kids and even if he got divorced the kids were a package deal but even said she always dated guys with kids. She was very insecure and it was so important to be number 1 to every man but continued to date married men. Just think she’s as screwed up as Chris!
