Chris, in one of your other videos you were using a table saw while wearing big clunky gloves. I was worried for your safety. If your bare finger touches the blade, you hopefully just get a nick and carry on. If your big clunky glove touches the blade, it will catch and be pulled into the blade area most likely causing a severe injury. I wouldn't want that to happen to you or anyone else. It is best and others will tell you, not to wear gloves when using a table saw. Please be safe as we all want more videos from you.
@ChrisMaherDIY3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the comment. I never thought of that but that makes perfect sense! I'll make sure to not wear gloves again and now that I think of it i should probably never wear baggy sweatshirts like i have in the past. Thanks again for the heads up and I do need to be more safe. Appreciate it David!

It's a shame that you didn't show the only thing that would interest me. How do you control the LED controller? How do you set the patterns? How do I turn on the device? Why is the LED controller not integrated in the lamp? How much did the material cost you?
@ChrisMaherDIY3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and the comment! I used a simple program called WLED that you can get on your phone to control the LED's. This program is loaded on a wifi board called an ESP2866. This guy does a far better job than i could ever do going over how easy it is to use the program and the effects you can make are pretty much unlimited. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJamdmV4pbGUi7M There are also great videos out there such as this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGKYoZ2LaL6NnMk that goes over step by step how you can easily Install WLED onto the ESP2866 Board.
@ChrisMaherDIY3 жыл бұрын
I decided not to try fitting the ESP2866 wifi board into the actual lamp since it was just easier not to. As far as materials, I estimate it probably cost around $35 dollars to make. Thanks again for watching and feel free to ask any other questions you might have!

Hi, Iam making something similar but got a problem. I used most of the same hardware that you used except the board. I used a Wemos mini D1. In the video you powered all of the leds with a normal phone charger. When i did this only like 5 leds light up. How did you get them all turn on? I tried different cables (even powered via PC only powers 5 leds). Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out! In the WLED app under settings there is a section called led preferences. There you input how many LEDs you have. That's how it worked for me. Are you using WLED program or something else?

I am trying to replicate this on a larger scale, a 10' pole. My question is I bought all the same materials as in the video but my LED out of the box have at both ends 3 wires going into connectors and 2 power wires, for total of 5 wires. I assume this is for connecting them & power? But, do I just cut off these connectors and follow the video with soldering 3 wires to the strips, jumper wires, going to the upgraded power supply? Thanks so much! Love your channel. After this I am building the VU Meeter. All for a project I am doing!
@ChrisMaherDIY2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much and great question! You are right on. They come with the connectors to connect them together and the extra red/white is if you want to add power at that point. You can either cut the first and last led off or you can remove the heat shrink material and use a soldering iron to melt the solder that's on them to remove the wires without wasting an led. Totally up to you! I generally just cut the led off since I'm not patient enough to do it the other way lol. You can also use those wires but I personally like soldering a little thicker wires to the led strips now vs using the ones it comes with.
@J0ermungand3 жыл бұрын
The real glass makes it look better than the "original" imho. If you had used a larger diameter inside tube you might've been able to hide the electronics inside the lamp itself, only leaving the power chord. That would protect the twisted wires from mechanical stresses as well.
@ChrisMaherDIY3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! 100% agree. Using a little larger tube would have made it easier and given me more room to put the components inside. Components inside would for sure be better than having everything outside like how i made it. It would have a more finished look. Thanks again!
@J0ermungand3 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMaherDIY You don't have to thank me, though I appreciate it. I find your quality of work really good, so it's enjoyable to watch your videos and see how you did it. My suggestions are mostly just incremental improvements I'd implement on top of your work, if I were to replicate it. I'm considering this particular build as a case for a DIY digital home assistant for example, so the bigger inner tube would be a must add for me.

But I was thinking I couldn't find a teardown of the Aura. Looking at some videos of it I'm thinking it's using a matrix panel. Could I be right in my thinking? Also I know I asked about the controller you used being able to be tied into alexa and Google. Did have a little look. All I saw was a demo of one led being turned on and off. With a whole heap of prep just to do that! Be good if there was a simple controller that did music .. wifi.. tuya.. and have the extensive pattern library of the software on that chip.
