What would get me really excited is if Muzata released a "corner" channel/diffuser that gave the same effect as this channel you used for the neon effect. I have not found ANY corner (V shaped) channels that have enough distance between the channel and diffuser to give a spotless neon look.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
I wish I could like this comment 100 times! I wish they would come out with something like this as well! They easily could! They might need to increase the distance a little from the led strip to the diffuser to create a spotless look but It cant be that hard to make one! They would sell a ton of those!!

I made a couple of corner lights running pairs of strips with LEDs offset by.one. Zoom meeting.lights behind computer desk as well as nigjtlighting duties. They give me a near spotless.look on all settings. But beware - once.you have the distance it comes with a larger cross section and with the edges at 90deg they get very rigid. If your corners aren't perfect they won't bend to fit. Mine constantly come off the tape and screws would be needed to pull them flat. I will swap them out for a flat channel soon.

Govee always crushes the competition and I own so many of their products it's insane. However, I would love to see the capability to assign a different color to EVERY LED especially in DIY mode, rather than the current grouping of three LED's (or six in some cases) So far, only the Hex panels offer this but I won't quibble. Great review and I'll probably add these to the collection soon.

I have all Govee in my office and have been decently pleased. For my primary lights along the walls I have the 32 ft, which is 15 pixels/ft maybe? Had been thinking I'd have to do a custom build if I wanted more density and overall brighter. But this seems like a good solution!

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I agree! Govee really is the best when it comes to plug and play options and I dont even think there is a competitor at this point but i've always been bummed that they did not offer a higher density pixel led strip. @@zgjfinance2796 The M1 is 16ft, but due to the LED density, I'd only need one to outdo the density/brightness of my current strip. So only looking at 99, or maybe 200 if I want to still have 32ft. And 200 is what some folks spend on a light fixture so 🤷‍♂️

Ohh man, I thought I already replied to this but looks like I didn't! My bad buddy! Overall I still like the WLED experience better but this is getting very close and when you combine the simple plug and play nature of this strip, I think its almost a toss up. But its also going to depend on your use case. If I have a project that only requires lets say 30 leds, I'm going to have a hard time justifying buying this 100 dollar strip for that amount of length so I think its really going to come down to what your trying to use them for!

Thanks so much for watching and great question! As of right now, you cant make it longer with Govee's app/configuration. I'm sure there is a way to connect these up with a different controller and kind of hack your way into 2 strips but at that point, you would probably just use other strips that are better suited for that type of setup. Update: Update: I plugged in a second strip to the end of the first and in setting hit refresh and the second strip fired up and everything seems to be working just fine! They are only using 1 power block and the 1 controller that is connected to the first led strip. I might put together a quick 1 minute follow up video going over this.

Your videos are the best, thank you for the content!! These seem like exactly what I was looking for. However, for my use case I need around 70ft of strips for a bedroom ceiling. Wonder if there's a way to make these work? If I individually power them will the app play nice? Can I change effects for them all at once?
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support buddy! So you can connect 2 strips together to create 1 long 10 meter run. The app also has a feature where you can sync same models together so you can control them all at once! So to get close to the 70ft, you would need 4 of these and after connecting them together you would have 2 sets of 2.

Thanks so much for watching! Great question. So the most you can connect is 2 strips for a total of 10meters. Those would all work off one controller. But if you need something a little longer, I would recommend probably just looking into the more diy led strip options out there. As always, awesome video Chris! Any ideas or recommendations for outdoors? My house is all Govee and I wanted to do something for the holidays. Thanks as always buddy! I think the neon rope lights come waterproof so that's always an option. I just used those on my deck video I just made and they are holding up great. But these diffuser channels although not waterproof would look perfect for diffusing the light and getting that nice glow but would probably have to mount them underneath an overhang or on the underside of the gutter to help protect from rain! At some point I'm going to start putting these on my house but that's a new level of commitment that I'm not quite ready for lol.

Hey Chris! This looks great! Do these strips necessarily need the diffuser now that it has that layer on top of the LEDs already? Also, how do they perform as the primary light in the bedroom? Are they able to stay bright as a semi warm color? Or a color thats conducive for working?
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! If you don't care about seeing the individial led lights then you certainly don't need a diffuser. But if you want them to have that even glow, then this diffuser that I'm using in the video one is the only one I have seen that will accomplish this. As far as your primary light in a room, I'm sure it would work for some but I personally don't think I would use it as a primary light source. The whites are decent but not great. Its hard to explain but after working with the COB led strips in my undercabinet lighting video, these just don't quite compare to those as far as white level performance.

Thanks so much and That's a good question! They have the clear coating over them which I think means they can withstand a little splash here and there but they are not ip67. I'm sure some type of channel would provide enough protection to keep them up year round but being that you cant at this time combine for example 3 of these to work as one, it might look a little choppy if they are not all working in unison if that makes sense.

@Zinic_
@Zinic_ Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMaherDIY No, and I guess I should mention I am using WS2812B LED strips instead, with the IP65 option for added protection with the weather. And I picked the 30LED/M for lower power consumption. It's very noticeable to see each individual LED, but as a year-round Christmas light setup, I am not bothered at all by it. You gave me inspiration for an indoor project I want to do, and I believe the deep channels you show in this video are the best diffusers at 60+/M. However, have you looked into the silicone gel LED "neon" diffusers? There are many different types and I wonder if one of them diffusers well. I actually bought one of them to test out, but haven't yet
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
@@Zinic_ Ahh gotcha! Much better option for permanent displays! I've seen those silicone diffusers and I've used a couple different ones and I think they are great for certain use cases! Some of them require you to thread your own leds through the diffuser and that's not an easy process. Also if you want to make straight lines, i think its easier to use the aluminum profiles then the flexible gel diffusers. But if you need to make any type of smooth curves/turns, the gels work great for that!

Hi Chris, thank you for the video! Looks sweet! I have a few questions for when you get a moment: 1. In lieu of soldering, can't you just use led corner connectors? 2. When connecting two aluminum channels together in a straight line, did you need to use a channel connector or did you simply just bump them up against each other? 3. When making the 90 degree turn at the corner of the wall, did that create any complications for how the diffuser cover fits into place, since it appears they would have to cross through each other? 4. Why do you have to use painters tape when cutting the aluminum channel? 5. If you're cutting the channel to make that first right turn, I assume you need to cut the diffuser cover at the same angle? 6. Did you do anything creative to hide the cables/adaptors at the end? Thank you!!

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! 1. I looked and could not find any corner connectors that fit this led strip. They are 4 pin and need to fit a 12mm led strip. Let me know if you find something on amazon that might work. Hopefully they will come out with something soon that will be compatible with this specific setup. There were a good amount of 4 pin connectors that I found but they were all for 12mm led strips. 2. I just bumped them up against each other. 3. The 90 degree turn worked out perfect with cutting them at a 45 degree angle with the miter saw. If you just did the corner as best you could without cutting, it would still look pretty good even with the little bit of cross through. 4. Painters tape helps keep the plastic and the aluminum together and helps prevent things from moving around and potentially getting an inaccurate cut. 5. The right turn on the second led strip I installed that goes down my wall needed a 45 degree cut as well but for that cut the diffuser channel sat on my miter saw differently. The milky white diffuser was facing up this time for that cut. 6. Nothing special to hide the cords. Just used some basic cable raceway kit. Its not perfect but good enough for my standards! amzn.to/3LQSLXI Thanks for all the great questions !

@@ChrisMaherDIY Thanks for responding Chris! I noticed the Govee M1's are 12mm wide but the muzata channel strip is 12.8mm wide. Were you able to fit the strip in there without issue? Lastly, I'm planning to incorporate this setup around the "island" style wall that separates my living room from the other rooms. I won't need to make any 90 degree turns since I'm just wrapping around the entire length of the wall, but my question is...what would you suggest for each of the 4 corners where the milky cover won't flushly connect with the next cover? And thus expose an inch or two of undiffused led strip...

In my experience govee is one step above junk. I still have 2x of their TV kits which are mediocre at best and a couple of their 32' kits that are a total joke as they are simply 2x 16' strands linked together by a 20 inch wire. The fact that these sre powered by a 3amp power brick should tell you that they are not meant to do anything hut look pretty. Find separate components that are high quality and go that route. I use rwo types of controllers a zigbee one that works with the hue app and a Quinn led controller which will give you far more control than anything from govee.

There's nothing that looks cheaper than LED hotspots. I'll be looking into the more labor intensive options though. What I don't like about plug'n'play is the clutter that builds up as you expand. Question. You said we can cut the strips shorter and the app will adjust the animation. But what about adding more strips together, to make it longer.... Will the app adjust to it being longer?

Thanks for watching and great question! So I was able to add 1 more strip to the end of the first one and it worked perfect! kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3LEYaxmYq2SY8k Now i have not tried cutting the second strip and adding only a part of it to the first one but I don't see why that would not work either! the max you can have is 2 strips. I tried a third and it did not work.

Excellent absolutely super video. I've been tinkering with LED strips since 2010. Q: I would like to install the Govee M1 using a drywall recessed aluminum strip so I am wondering if you have any photos of the power suppy connection and how you might recommend adding a wiring extender in wall (say 6 ft) Thanks again for the video !

Thanks so much for watching and the kind words! That sounds like a very cool idea! I would love to do that same thing some day if I get the chance using the recessed drywall channels. I don't have a picture handy but you can kinda get a idea of the power supply components at around the 50 second mark of the video where I'm unboxing. I always have had good luck using 18 gauge silicone wires and just soldering them to the pads. I made a video where I go into a little more detail of this using the govee M1! Here is that video. Hope it helps! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqiXhJqmi9SKqrc

@@ChrisMaherDIY Hi Chris, thanks for the reply. I believe the output of the Govee powersupply is 4 wires but can't quite tell from the unboxing. So my question is "to do a permanent install and hide the controller in an accessible location (say in a cabinet where there is access for future replacement) , I would need to cut the Govee output wire, then run my own 4 wires to the strip start point, then resolder the govvee conector to the strip)? Does that soudns like a reasonable thing to do? I mean these power supply / controllers will fail at some point but 4 speaker wires will not. (I am assuming the wires are not twisted internally for shielding purposes) I saw the soldering video, it has restored my faith in the possibility of soldering the 4 connectors - in the past I tried many, many times to do that with the 3 - wire RGB and always failed. Now I know it's possible so thats excellent ! thank you for that as well !

Stumbled across this video at the perfect time. We're rebuilding our house from a hurricane and one of the few tech items I'm looking to add is potentially some led strips in my main room. I just bought a bunch of Govee temp and humidity monitors, so this would be great to stay in the eco system since I already need the app. Are there any diffusers that might work well in a vaulted ceiling room? I'm thinking about running them length wise down both sides of the room, and maybe both sides of the peak. The room is 16ft so these 16ft strips would probably be perfect, I'm trying to essentially throw the light up and down the vaulted ceiling to essentially make the ceiling glow as much as possible. We removed popcorn when the house was gutted so now I have a smooth white ceiling and think it would be nice to be able to cast a low light while watching tv, or do some color effects if we're having people over to watch a game or something. I'm not sure strips will toss that much light like I'm thinking plus I'm struggling with how to hide them. So maybe the solution is some type of diffuser and just have it run visibly across the room like a neon tube. Just not sure if they have diffusers that can fit in a vaulted angle.

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! That's a great question but I think what your trying to do would look amazing! i'm not 100% sure what would work best with a vaulted ceiling but what I would end up doing is just ordering a bunch of stuff, do some testing out and keep what you think looks the best and return everything else. But even if it does not work to hide everything, I personally still like the look of just these diffuser channels running near the ceiling.
@Juncti
@Juncti Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMaherDIY I've decided to try and create a small hidden channel if I can and try to hide the light strip behind it where only the light bleeds up past the hidden area. We'll see what happens. Barring that, I think I might get some of this 90 degree channel and try to cut the trim at the top of the wall at an angle where the angle of the ceiling and wood come to 90 and the diffuser can just sit in that spot and look similar to yours, just running along the top edge of the two outer walls. We'll see what happens. New to this style of lighting, got a pair of Govee M1's, also decided to order my can lights from Govee and might add the TV backlight as well since these can all work together apparently. Should look cool when done

Big question here is.. Can you control these lights with a WIndows app? IE so it can be tied into other applications or games? The one annoyance i find with 90% of these LED strips is that they are ONLY controlled via a mobile app so you cannot integrate them into PC setups for uniformity.

What if I just simply want a normal living room LED strip light, BUT.. in the evening that it would have the ability to get some colors out of it, would this M1 be suitable? Can you get a basic 3000K white light from it? To light up the whole living room?
