My wife bought me a Duo Sonic as my first electric guitar almost exactly a year ago. I had just accepted a new job after having tremendous struggles with my previous one, and she got it for me as a thank you for pushing through and finding a better job/situation. For that reason I will never ever get rid of the guitar because of its sentimental value, but it’s also just an amazing instrument. The 24” scale length plays incredibly fast and smooth, and the pickups sound fantastic. I initially thought it felt like a perfect blend of strat and tele (it’s a string through like a tele and the bridge pickup has some tele twang to it, the body is shaped like a strat, and the neck sounds more stratty), but after playing it over the past year I found that it definitely has its own distinct tonal flavor. Needless to say, it’s just fantastic I would highly recommend it to anyone!

Can definitely vouch for the Duo Sonic. I bought a H-S version about four years back and got a lot of fun out of it. Recently gave it to my 17yo as a first 'good' guitar and she loves it. Great for smaller hands with plenty of punch in the H (which also splits) while the S (neck) has a nice warmth without getting muddy.

I’m convinced the Duosonics that you and the other influencers were sent by Fender had received a great deal more TLC at the factory than the ones sent to Joe Public. I ordered mine for £499 based on your review and what I received was junk. That little 'Duo' is cool. It's always amazed me how we find tones we like, and how our taste changes over the years. I remember having one of those in the 60's, and selling it for $25!! LOL Another example is the Yamaha Revstar. I needed something with P90's. At the time the Yamaha Revstar is what people were talking, and raving about. I did my research, and ordered a black Standard with p90's. I waited 8 months to get one!! I'm still not sure why!?!? But I was very excited, there was so much good stuff being said about them! I unboxed it, played it for 10 days, a lot! Then sent it back. It was not my bag at all. It felt completely foreign to me. Maybe because I've played Gibson and Fender for 50 years? Now I've found an SG, w/p90's and a wrap tail bridge that I like!! They took the Yamaha back, no questions asked. Thanks, Peace.. --gary

The Duo Sonic is definitely one of my favourite guitars, so unique and easy to play! Curiously mine has the two pickups out of fase in the middle position, which was the result of swapping the original bridge pickup with a new ona with the "wrong" polarity. I bought a Duo Sonic when they first came out with the one mentioned today. I had the PU's changed with a custom shop Duncan wound 55 Tele at the bridge and a 66 Rickenbacker scatter wound at the neck. It gives me the era Pete Townsend went between those 2 sounds. I was lucky the the women who wound Pete's PU's was still alive and working for Ric a few half days every week and she did my PU. She even had it shipped as a replacement part so I paid $75. I have the orange Duo with the maple fretboard. the pickguard is vintage plastic tortoise shell. The new tortoise shell is clear plastic with a photo of the old plastic. You can see the difference.

I built a "Parts-O-Sonic" guitar a few years ago. Used a Fender MIM Duo-Sonic body, Alparts MIJ 24" scale neck with 7.25" radius *Jaguar replacement neck.. TVJ Starwood tele neck and a P-Rails HB type pickup from England and a wild electronics job featuring the Dan Armstrong "A more versatile Strat" wiring, It uses a single pot to blend between humbucking series and single coil pos 1,5 AND in phase / out of phase pos 2,4 off the 5 way switch. I love the dang thing, even the weird wiring worked for me right off the bat. Light weight and comfortable on stage or on the couch. The short scale is a blast for bends and soloing. I string it up with Turbo Slinkies, 9.5- 46.

As ever, I will put in a plug for the "half-out-of-phase" mod. This trick with 2-pickup guitars was developed by Bill Lawrence, as far as I know, and involves standard phase reversal of the pickups, but with an added twist. By inserting a capacitor in series with the neck pickup, you reduce its bass content. This still results in cancellation, but not for the low end. The end result is a different sound, lacking the nasal honk we associate with phase-reversal, and with NO, I repeat, *NO* volume drop. Fender used this trick on the Jerry Donahue Telecaster to mimic the neck+middle position of a Strat on a 2-pickup Telecaster. I implemented it on a beater I have that is best described as a full-scale (25.5") Duosonic, and it sounds like a Strat N+M. I implemented it on an old Vantage guitar with a pair of Schaller humbuckers. Naturally, it doesn't sound like a Strat, but it provides a neck+bridge sound that is very usable, very different, and very trouble-free. I don't think it is trademarked or patented, so folks should feel free to include it on their 2-pickup guitars. Broadens the tonal palette nicely.

one of the most cool sounds i’ve heard recently is on an album by a guy called Allen Epley (named Everything), which is a lap steel into a ‘66 Pro Reverb. Just a gorgeous sound, and a gorgeous album. I’ve also, after playing many an EL84/34 type amp, decided that Fenders of any era really are my favourite. Live I love mid powered tweeds (like the Bandmaster/Pro/Super), but in the studio a Super Reverb through 2 EVM12Ls is incredibly hard to best.

7:30 Yeah, I'd argue with that. I get it if you're specifically referring to Les Paul/duel pickup guitar players, but surely the most famous user of out-of-phase is Brian May, he's used his hand made circuit in probably every solo and some riffs/chords in verses/chorus' of some songs too. I admit, I know a lot more Queen songs than Peter Green, but even he was playing out of phase in "Black magic woman", I've still never really noticed it, I can't even think of Jimmy Page sounding particularly out of phase in any song/solo.
