Ive had the cops called on me 4 times in one day at 4 different spots for ice fishing. Its ridiculous the little things people call the cops for. I dont get why the person calling the cops just doesnt come over and say something first instead of wasting a cops time.

Oh, come on. Private or public is irrelevant. He himself said the ice was just barely thick enough. The cop said the weather wasn't yet cold enough to make truly solid ice. The cops/rescue don't want to risk their safety and/or comfort to rescue fools. That alone should be enough, at least for anyone with an ounce of common sense.

Contact your local Game Warden or D.N.R. and see what they have to say about public access to these ponds. They'd have the best knowledge about game laws, ice, and access. I wouldn't trust the local cops to know trespass laws, game laws, etc. See if you can get a phone number for a Game Warden/Conservation Officer and save that to your phone for future use so if a cop harasses you again you can call the Warden in front of the Cop and maybe get some back up to your right to be legally fishing in a particular area.
@MsPrincesspaulina
@MsPrincesspaulina 6 жыл бұрын
P.S. A visit to the County Courthouse Property/Zoning Office should give you info on public lands and waters where it's legal to fish without trespassing. The County Sheriff might also have good info too. I don't trust a local cop to know this kind of stuff as this generally falls outside of their normal duties. The easy solution for a local cop is to tell you that you can't fish there because he doesn't want to deal with you. That's what happened here, I think. The fact he didn't even get out of his car tells me he didn't want to deal with you and looked for the easy, for him, solution.
@MsPrincesspaulina
@MsPrincesspaulina 6 жыл бұрын
Sorge 616 I'll stand by my statement, rookie. Just because someone calls the cops doesn't mean that Chris doesn't have a legal right to fish there and the cop may not know that. Yes, the cop responded to the calls but upon being informed by Chris the ice was safe the cop should have left him alone and let him get back to fishing and not chase him off the ice. Like I said, the cop didn't want to deal with Chris and so took the easy way out by chasing Chris off the ice. I'd still check with a Game Warden and make sure of public property access rights. Then the next time a cop ordered me off the ice I'd have solid information to back me up. You have to stand up for yourself in this world.
@MsPrincesspaulina
@MsPrincesspaulina 6 жыл бұрын
Here in Minnesota all lakes, rivers, streams, reservoirs, ponds, are public waters and legal to access and fish UNLESS the water is 100% surrounded by private property, if so, then you cannot legally access that water. I'm assuming here that this pond is public water. With that in mind, the cop shouldn't have ordered Chris off the ice when told it was safe. If it is private water then Chris can't fish there. But I don't expect the cop answering the call to really know if this is a public or private pond.

Wow, all this hate and anger simply because I tried to help Chris by telling him not to take this cops word that he couldn't fish this pond and to get more information about being able to fish this pond in the future... and I'm the bad guy here? smh, rookie. Chris Bulaw: Sorg616 doesn't realize it but he's making my point for me. He thinks he's got all the answers and everyone should just listen to him. There's a lot of people like that in the world and some of them have badges, guns, uniforms and handcuffs, like the cop in this video. I say, to heck with that. Do your own research and find out if you can legally fish this pond in the future. Contact your Game Warden and County Property Office. If they say it's legal to fish this pond then you're good to go and if not then you're not. But at least you will know for sure and not just take the word of someone who may or may not know what they're talking about. Don't take my word for anything either. Do your own research. There are many videos here on youtube about cops telling people they can't fish in places where they can legally fish. Just because a cop says you can't fish someplace doesn't mean they're right.

We don't want you to be a liability" I've had cops tell me over and over again. We don't mind you fishing its just the miserble people that we have to listen to that bitch and whine. Claiming that your disturbing there peace or don't want you to be a "liability" Have or most of the police I've met fish as well. And they think is bullshit that people are just so miserble with themselves. That they have to make others around them feel like shit. Its a fact most of the time its the cop wanting to get off the ice or away from the pound. Its the locals plain and simple.

If it's a recurring issue, I would call the local police department ahead of time and tell them you are going ice fishing at XYZ location so if they get any calls from concerned citizens they can disregard them. If LE is uncooperative and you are sure you have the right to do it then you might even see about attending a local city council meeting that allows residents to speak briefly and raise concerns. They could look into it and notify local LE on your behalf.

I'm sure it has all the cops and forest preserve officers a little more diligent about safety. I like to fish all the ponds in that area. Hopefully I'll see you around next spring. Hell, I've been fishing for almost 2 decades and I'll tell you right now it takes a serious effort to break more than 2 inches of ice without an automobile. You'd have to be jumping or literally stab the ice at your feet, unless it's weak ice which is visually noticeable by the taint in color.

The water here in Dallas only gets around 50 degrees at the coldest. Ponds icing over is rare and when they do it’s never 3” thick also ponds have to be VERY shallow to freeze here. Ice fishing would be fun but it’s impossible in Dallas. It’s possible in Amarillo Texas though so I don’t actually have to leave the state to ice fish and also i can catch cichlids like oscars and tilapia in Brownsville lol. So Texas has everything from Tropical to Desert to Swamp/Forest to Cold mountainous climates.

Leave anglers alone unless they are breaking a law. Should have kept fishing Chris. What would the charge have been? Disrespecting a cop I guess. The law that is not a law.

If its a public pond and there is no law against ice fishing there then I would have told that cop that it is my job to be concerned for my safety and not his. Then I would have turned around and said that I was going back to legally take fish and if he didnt like it then arrest me and suffer the consequences of the lawsuit later. Then when I got home I would have called the DNR and filed a report with them that the officer interfered with the legal taking of fish. (against the law in many states) Then after I cooled off (or warmed up) and filed a complaint with that cops agency the next day for illegally interfering with my legal taking of fish for which i am licensed for. The machine wont fix itself. File complaints, sue for unlawful arrests, sue the police officers individually in a civil suit, sue the police agency, county it resides in and teach them a very valuable lesson. Make it easier for the next person to sue them once they are taught a lesson in court the first time. If they do it again then they cant deny that they didnt know any better.

Hey Chris, I live up in New Hampshire and we catch some good lakers and rainbows through the ice up here. I know plenty of guys with hard sided shanty’s and I have one of my own. You should definitely try and come up here, I do a lot of laker sight fishing in 17-20 feet because the water is so clear here

Good ol Springfield Park... we caught some toads in there as kids but the residents aren’t shy about calling the cops on that one. Shoot last winter I had the cops called on me for fishing in my own backyard

People need to mind their own business. They call the cops about everything. Lol. Every experience I have had with police here in Michigan while fishing has been a good one thankfully. They usually ask me how the bite is, what I'm catching, etc. Many of them wish they didn't hafta work so much so they could fish more. Good to know that you're willing to travel to fish. I'm mostly a warm weather fisherman, but am going to give the ice a few more tries this winter. Good luck out there!

The cop was cool about it...and correct in his contact...sadly to say many people fall through ice, --- as a law enforcement office, I personally handled ice and snow rescues. It's serious stuff. More colder weather would secure the ice is safe

in the cops defense if he did go through then one of them may have to risk themselves going out and getting him. in todays world unfortunatley no one wants to open themself up to a liability lawsuit so they just shut anything and everything down. we had a guy near my place over 20 years ago ride a bmx off a popular cliff jumping place about 50ft tall and got paralysed. his parents sued and somehow won so now no one can jump there anymore except the little 20ft baby cliff. people are straight retarded and expect everyone else to pay for their mistakes.

I'm just getting started and I'm not very good at it, but out here in Wyoming no one will hassle you for ice fishing. There is a public pond here in Evanston for skating... probably wouldn't let is fish there, bit there are lots of good places to fish. Also, walleye and burbot are species non-grata on many of these reservoirs, must kill and keep and no limit. Just sayin'.

I'm sure the officer was thinking about the kids, you did say the kids were watching you. They looked pretty young and I'm sure some of them were getting the idea to go out there and play. Which brings to mind why the heck are all these cities building schools by ponds or even digging ponds around schools, especially grade/elementary schools. Most kids in that age range do not know how to swim well or swim at all.

Dang, that sucks that he kicked you off. I can see why tho, people don't understand who don't ice fish. Up here in Ely Mn we have 10-12 inches of ice already. I've already caught lots of crappie and walleye. Tight lines Chris🤙🏻

Chris I see your point, but think about this, those kids at that school watching you on the ice might try to get on a pond and they may not check the ice like you did. But they saw a guy doing it and just assumed it was safe.

Hi Chris! only 2 years late to the party, but have you ever ice-fished in Palos Park? I set up on the pond just West of Lagrange Rd on McCarthy Road (300ft). I've ice-fished there numerous times including twice with County Sheriffs and a Chicago PD sportsmen. Lots of fun! the lake is 7 to 9' deep at it's deepest I think.

A new 30 dollar set of blades will make that old Mora cut like butter as long as the metal holding the blades didn't get bent. But I hear ya, I switched to an electric drill setup last year and it is so much nicer.

It's not that the blades get dulled it's that the angle of the fixture they bolt to gets bent. After a couple of good shots like that one it doesn't matter how sharp the blades are, it still won't cut.
