This is how it is in Australia (and long before coronavirus). I remember having a very similar conversation with a lady at the post office. She said, well the postie must have thought you weren’t home. I replied, but I’d left the front door open all day so he’d know I was home 🤦🏻‍♀️

I once took two days off work just to get a delivery (unpaid as a contractor too) and when I saw the little note from Toll, called them and blasted them with a tirade... a guy turned up under an hour later with my air conditioner... amazing what they actually are capable of if they wanted to do their jobs properly

We paid for delivery, we were right here, we saw him stop, write the card and put it in the mail box and drive away. We asked about a refund for the postage after driving 14 Ks to the post office and back. I would have fared better if I asked in pig latin. There is no word "refund" in their existence. The electricity meter reader has the same virus.

This is why I have a standing request to leave as many things as possible at my door. If a signature is required, then they can't just leave it and go - but for everything else, knock or don't, but place my things down and back away slowly. Postage is delayed enough already thanks to the limited flights, and staffing/distancing issues at sorting facilities; on top of the decision to stop daily postal deliveries. So there's no need to make it even HARDER on top of all that.

Aus Post can't even be bothered to deliver that note to me anymore.. I literally have to check my emails regularly and wait for an email saying 'we attempted delivery at xx day and time but no-one was home' even though I'm working from home all day and barely ever leaving the place... when I complain they say they can't do anything and to call on the phone, I call and then there is automated message saying they can't answer the call due to covid... lose lose lose situation

Australia Post is a useless organisation. Even worse than the US postal service. My mother who still lives in Oz sent me a Xmas card to the UK whose postal service is excellent (privatised) first week in December. It arrived 29th December.
