In this video I tested Techron Concentrate Plus by Chevron. I use a mini borescope camera to look into the engine and see how dirty the engine is before the fuel treatment and then after the fuel treatment.
I followed the instructions on the container and Techron performed similarly to gumout. This is the third test in a series of fuel cleaner test I will be performing to see how fuel cleaners work and if they actually work.
Here is the fuel cleaner I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000...

Try Redline fuel system cleaner its far better & proven. *Better yet fill up every time w/ Top Tier rated fuels . They have much more additives/detergents than required by fed law minimums* . Google list of certified top tier rated gas ⛽️ stations. Maybe Chris can expand on this topic in future a video. Seems best way to go vs counting on bottle of *any product* every 3-5k mis. Especially in modern GDI/GTDI engines like in my trusty '20 Ranger XLT FX4 w/its excellent gen2 - 2.3L engine.

From my experience as a retired master tech, that wouldn't consist of any significant amount of carbon buildup. Those products are for really gummed up pistons and valves with caked on carbon which typically came from carbureted vehicles and their lack of thorough atomization. You really don't see the amount of carbon build up that we saw in the past unless you have leaky valve seals and plugged up injectors. But even with today's fuel additives in the gasoline, this counters a lot of this.

Direct Injection engines are really prone to heavy build up so its really for direct injection engines. My dodge which is Sequential Multiport Fuel Injection is really prone to clogged injectors if the fuel has any kind of contaminants at all and had one get plugged so badly the dealer had to pop open the engine to get it fixed.
@drewbienewbie03xx81
@drewbienewbie03xx81 Жыл бұрын
@PilsPlease you're correct. Due to the way direct injection engines work, detergent and other cleaning agents added to fuel are unable to clean the port and valve as they should. A master tech should know something like that... then again the Caddilac master tech I deal with is not the most knowledgeable either...💯🤷🏻‍♂️😆

I first used Techron just after its introduction as a fuel additive to Chevron fuel. I first used it in a 1970 Porsche 914 with a 1.7L motor that I had to drag home. I cleaned out the gas tank and filled it with Chevron regular with Techron, pulled the injectors, all four were stuck closed. I freed them up by pushing the pintles against piece 2X4and got it to start, The motor loped and ran very rough, but after ten minutes it started to run smoothly and the throttle response was very good. It became a daily driver with nothing more than new tires. With respect to this test, one or two bottles of Techron will not give the results that a long term use of the Chevron gas with Techron will do. It is too much to expect the product to perform with such a limited exposure as this test.
@chrisperlik8673
@chrisperlik8673 7 жыл бұрын
Chris, your videos are awesome! Very informative and you give actual evidence instead of analyses based on biased feelings. I think you have proven that Techron is too ambitious with its "immediate result" claims, but over time I think it has the ability to have a positive result on the majority of the fuel system when used somewhat frequently. I used it recently on my Durango with over 200,000 miles. I poured an entire bottle into 1/4 tank of gas to see if it would help with a rough idle (the truck would even stall at times). It was also throwing an engine misfire code. After going through the 1/4 tank, the rough idle problem disappeared along with the misfire code. 5 months and a few thousand miles later, the issue has not come back. As proven by your video, my fuel system is likely not squeaky clean, but in a much better state than it was. This was meant to be a hail mary before diving into ignition and fuel delivery components, and it has paid off so far. Techron contains a detergent called PEA, which from what I understand is one of the most effective fuel detergents available on the consumer market. I think it would be worth testing Red Line SI-1 as I think it has a higher concentration of PEA than Techron. It would be interesting to see if it has more immediate thorough results than the Techron.

This product works! After running Techron high mileage with several tanks of premium fuel, the car starts right up and idles smoothly. Driving away it does so without hesitation or bucking. I used this product in several tanks of premium fuel in my 1998 Mercedes-benz C230 with 258,000 miles on the odometer, was having issues starting right away, would not idle smoothly when cold, and would falter when accelerating. Before the treatments, starting would sometimes require a couple of tries. Once warmed up it was okay the rest of the day but gas mileage wasn't as good as it had been. Today, it's now back up to 28 miles per gallon.

The fact that there are slight changes, means it works a bit. One bottle of this before every oil change is probably enough to maintain the fuel nozzles. Cleaning the whole chamber is another story, no other "safe" cleaner will make it shinny. It's the fuel injectors are more important to me. Thanks for this video!

You don't actually want to clean 200,000 miles of carbon deposits in 1 go. If the cleaner was aggressive enough to remove that much gunk that fast, that gunk would scratch up your engine cylinders pretty bad. You should use 1 bottle every oil change to clean-up the 3-7 K miles worth of deposits, not 200,000 miles worth of deposits.

Do it 1 to 2 gas tank fulls before oil change, not after. I read some place that these cleaners reduce viscosity of oil if they get mixed into the oil, so you want to change out the oil reasonably soon after using the cleaner. Also, all the dissolved carbon will get picked up by oil and either circulate through the system and gets deposited elsewhere or in best case gets trapped by oil filter. In either case you want to remove dirty oil and its filter as soon as possible.

b.s. that's just how they get you to buy more bottles of the stuff. I'm sure there is a way to get a cleaner in there to get it off. Honestly I did see some improvement in this video that he didn't see for some reason but I don't buy the, "well you just have to keep buying bottles." Selling tool, mainly because I worked in sales and marketing and know how it works. There is a reason Mobil 1 only needs to be changed every 10-15k miles and when you take apart a motor that's been using Mobil 1 religiously after 150k miles and one that hasn't' there is a a huge difference. I'm so glad my car won't allow to me to use this gunk just sad that it only tells you that in the owner's manual so who know how many people still buy this stuff.

Hi chrisfix - I liked your video. As far as removing carbon from an engine goes, keep in mind that, in many cases, it takes years for that carbon to build up. Yes, you probably already knew that it would take longer, but wanted to prove it. Job well done. I have been driving for over 60 years, I am now 75 years old, and have never ever had any problems with engines, fuel injectors, or fuel systems. Twice a year, once in the June, and once in December, since I was 21 yesrs old, I added 6 to 8 bottles of fuel injector cleaner twice a year, to every vehicle i have ever owned including cars and trucks, fours, sixes, and eights included. Yes, yes, I know, they usually say one bottle for twenty gallons, or one bottle for each fill up. Yes, i have spent my entire life looking outside the box, if you know what I mean, with great success. If you look outside your paradym of beliefs, you will amaze yourself with new disoveries, and find suprising opportunuties for yourself. My plugs after100,000 miles usually look new, and there was minimal carbon build up on any of the vehicles I have ever owned. Of course, I change my own oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles, and the other filters once or twice a year, and I do not abuse my vehicles. Over my 60 years of driving only once did i ever break down on the road. When I told a friends how much injector clearer i used, they couldn't believe it, and no, I have never damaged any electrical or mechanical parts by using more than what the manufacturers recommend The reason I use as much as I do is to saturate the gas with injector cleaner so the cleaner is strong enough to do some intense cleaning of the mechanical parts. I know some experts would flip out, but the benefit is well proven over 60 years of actual results, and not from someones theory of what would happen. In life there is yada, yada, yada, and there is going out there and doing it, period. And by the way, I cannot remember the last time any of my vehicle ran rough. P.S. keep up the good work. JN1942

I've tested it on the dyno. Using poor quality gasoline makes your intake valves dirty and can cause a 5% power loss. Using Techron Concentrate at the recommended dosage in one tankful plus the residual Techron of that into the next tankful can clean the valves and restore power to within 1% of brand new clean valves. Using ASTM D6201 cycle for deposit accumulation and cleaning. Using SAE J1349 for power testing.

Nice test but I think this stuff is more for cleaning the injectors out instead of the built up carbon with the combustion chamber and on the intake valves (on DI motors). I tried this stuff some years ago by soaking clogged fuel injectors that were removed from the engine for 12 hours in a small bowl of this stuff. The injectors were really clean after the 12 hour soak and worked beautifully when put back on the car.

Yeah I agree with this guy. Better for injectors. DI (Direct Inject Motors) are plagued with carbon issues. Although they generally perform better when clean. This may buy some time or help keep them in shape, but 93 Octane should be of help as well. DI motors shouldn’t run less than 91 but people do it. Mini Coopers suffer badly from carbon build up. End of story is nothing will prevent the Walnut Blasting. But this may buy time or take care of a mild issue on a newer car etc. The problem with DI is the fuel will never hit the back of the valve. So neither will this stuff. It’ll still help in other areas although. On the R56 Mini Cooper S generally 60k+ you’ll need Walnut Blasting. Every car is different but that’s usually how quick the Carbon builds on those cars. Depends on fuel and driving habits. I’m a MINI guy. Still think Techron is a safe cheap way to go. But it’s probably going to do more for injectors less for pistons and absolutely nothing for the back of a valve on a DI car. At $5 it’s buying some time if used every so often or on a over night soak. Some people never notice the carbon issues till your losing power or burning a valve. So that’s the other problem. The valves in a MINI are tough. Forget what they used. But they are tough because of the DI. It’s not just MINI either BMW in general. Carbon nightmare. Lol. We should also do a test on hard highway driving. I bet that helps contribute to how well Techron will clean. Seafoam I’ve used on a VW soaking cylinders over night. Used MMO before as well. Overnight soaks help a lot. But the back of a valve on DI car *sigh* Walnut Blasting lol. DI cars are a carbon nightmare. But they do perform better. Ethanol and gas in America is a problem for them as well. Ethanol good for environment hurts your nice BMW. The DME ECU can adapt. But I always tell people run 93. Won’t stop the problem but it’ll slow it way down. I can go on forever. Overall like the test. Good video and I chimed in to this guy when he said DI, then soaking in Techron. Agree 100%. We will see more DI motors before electric as well. I think Ford has plans to do it. Ford Traded EcoBoost with Mercedes Benz for DI technology etc. Walnut Blasting is already something dealers are getting into.

I have used Techron x 3 times. Each time I had it added one to two tanks before my regular 10k servicing so as to also flush out the carbon during oil changed. It actually worked. From 600km per tank I was able to keep seeing improvement to my fuel consumption every single servicing until I hit a maximum of 725km. And the car feels great when accelerating. Maybe u should test it this way.

Same here. I just started using this for the first time and I am already feeling a difference. Specifically when the engine is idling. The engine operates much smoother than before. I have a GDI engine so I am not expecting great results in regards to the intake valves; however, the engine does fee drastically smoother. I plan to use it two more times before the year is over.

It does work. I recently bought a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta that was living it's life in a parking garage in Manhatten NY with only 15,000 miles. I did a CARFAX and called the dealer and all was legit. I drove it for a few blocks and all was fine. When I was bringing the car home I hit the gas onto the 59th street bridge and the car bogged and did the same thing when I hit the gas thereafter. After using Techron with about a little more than 1/4 tank of gas the car ran perfect.

Thanks for the testing. I personally had been using this on a couple tank fills because of slight knocking from using Arco premium which I was told was not the right gas to use on my Sky Redline. So I started buying Chevron premium and I used the Techron concentrated fuel system cleaner. After 2 full tank fills of using it, It did fix the very slight knocking I was having. Not sure if it was from just changing the fuel to Chevron premium or was it the Concentrate Plus additive. Possibly both solved the issue of the knocking. So no more Arco for me.

I think the key to see with a lot of these fuel system cleaners is its best to start early in the life of your vehicle. I think if you did 1 every 3000-5000 miles it probably prevents the hard build up. Over 150K miles it would cost you about $300. Idk if it is worth it but it seems cheap enough to be worth a shot.

The test method may be faulty. My understanding is; Techron should be used in conjunction with many "start - run - cool down - start - run - cool down" periods when using the product. The carbon cleaner soaks into the carbon when the engine is cooling/cold, and when the engine heats up again, the carbon falls off. Also, super concentrating the solution (1 bottle in a few gallons of gas) is not recommended, probably because the Techron gets no time to slake into the carbon, before it gets pushed out of the combustion chamber - even though it is concentrated, it's working time is greatly reduced.

Sorry ChrisFIx, but you got that all wrong. You will always have some carbon on top of the pistons because that's where the combustion takes place. Techron's main purpose is to clean the back side of the intake valve. Fuel flows around the back side of the intake valve when entering the combustion chamber. Over time, the intake valves accumulate a large amount of carbon buildup on their back side that prevents the air/fuel mixture from entering the combustion chamber efficiently - Techron is meant to clean those deposits. I have used Techron for years and it does work as intended - I know because I've had either the intake manifold or heads off for inspection before and after it's use many times.

Well if you want to judge how well this product actually works, then the valves should have been inspected, not the piston head. If you look at the bottle, it shows injector, VALVE and piston - in the order of effectiveness and importance. How do I know? 25 years as an ASE certified master tech... So Master Wing, nothing you said matter, nice try though, cheers...

This definitely helped with my MPGs. I have a 2003 Honda CRV which was getting about 280miles to the tank at best, sometimes worse. Usually 130-140 miles to a half tank. I used the Techron and on my second tank I had 180 miles for the half tank. Still going so far. I'll update what my final miles for the tank ends up at. My guess is the fuel injectors were blocked up. That was my main issue not necessarily carbon build up. I did notice that my MPGs went down big time after using Seafoam. About 1 month after I had to replace both 02 sensors in the cat. I wont use seafoam again.
