I think it gave Pimoz a scare as his lead was only 14sec and even with the 3km rule there can be time splits if the peloton splits into two or more distinct groups. That why once G started leading out Cav we saw TJV quickly bring Rog to the front group

I was never a cyclist - I played rugby as a front rower so have a completely different body type, but the intricacies of cycling have kept me fascinated for over 25 years as a spectator. The politics of the peloton truly fascinate me. Some days you can be in a position where you can't help yourself or your team but if you help someone else it will come back later. Thomas riding for Cavendish made my heart sing.

This Giro was one for the ages. It had bad weather, crashes, Covid and a reversal of fortunes at the end. Breakaways that stuck, new stars in the making and the craziest mountain ITT ever devised. We're going to remember this one for a very long time. Chris, thanks for your expert analysis throughout these 3 weeks. Pointing out things we may have missed and highlighting Knucklehead tactics and riders is your brilliant strength. Chapeau!
@oscarw1060 Жыл бұрын
Disagreed. This was the most forgettable race since the Sky Train Froome TDF days. The sprint stages low-key carried cause they were all so messy 😂. But we literally watched the exact same guys going in breakaways and fighting for stages and KOM points like 14 times over. Stages 8, 16, 19 and 20 were the only remotely exciting GC days (yes the flat TTs mattered too but let's be real they're boring AF to watch). I did love the mountain TT, but one great stage doesn't make a great race. Especially with big favourites dropping out left right and centre.

It was all a beautiful Giro with a surprise ending, brotherly love between Ineos and Cav and why not, another win for the UK crew, another story to tell at the pub. And thanks, Chris, for stepping up to the mike after each stage and beyond. And I am firmly in the camp that Primoz should show up for the Tour because, of course, it is Woodstock, the biggest show of the year and he is in top condition. And anything can occur on any stage to any top contender. But if he is going to insist on riding 1x, he really needs Acme to ship him bikes with chain guides. He can win another GT. However, the only win he has came as a result of riding aggressively for Froome. He has a similar problem to Jan Ullrich's. He doesn't know how to save just enough reserve strength while protecting his own lead. And because of his size (same with Ullrich) his team can only do so much to protect him in the mountains when he starts to hit his limits. He's a great athlete that isn't built for GTs.

Great Tour and great analysis. Well done Roglic for a brilliant final TT though I think Ineos deserved a win because of their team work with just 4 supporting. Even though he’s my favourite rider I do not think Thomas will win another Tour unless he gets lucky - ie problems such as Remco getting Covid or Tao crashing or Roglic just below his best and no Pog or Vindegaard but after helping others for most of his career he has finished first second and third in Tour and now a close second here so certainly has chances. I do think he would have won past Giros but for the motorbike crash and the water bottle crash - he certainly was much fitter than Tao that year. However this year I think Tao was fitter and stronger and much better than when he won. It would have been interesting to see what happened had Tao gone into last week with a two-pronged Ineos attack on Roglic Roglic deserved to win but Kuss saved him on stage 16 and the gap would have been a lot more than 16 secs had Tao been with Thomas and Almeida. He might do Vuelta though seems to be more focussed on Worlds and then suspect he might do Tour next year as his last main Tour though he would be the most fantastic support rider for a few more years as his work for Cav proved! While he is generally more of a TT type than a climber - in my view he was the best and most consistent climber left at Giro until that last 100m of stage 19 when the altitude jumped on his back.

You couldn't have a better lead out man than G Thomas. World Champ. Olympic Champ, TT stage winner, etc. He is a horse. If Bernal is fit, G (and others!) could carry him to tdf victory.

I think Thomas is the only rider in Ineos who can guarantee them a podium in GT (at least). He seems to be the best of the rest behind Pogacar, Jonas, Roglic, and probably Remco (since he hasn't beaten Thomas in the GT yet). Maybe Carapaz will be on the same level as Thomas? Roglic was hurt after Stage 11 crashed. I believe that he is healthy (doesn't crash or sick) he is still a threat to Pogacar. I still think that having Roglic and Jonas will have a bigger chance of JV winning the Tour against Pogacar. His DS Zeerman said that there's no Tour for Roglic if he fighting for Giro GC. But as what happens with JV before the Giro starts, they have to replace 5 guys from their original rosters, so there's a possibility he could be called up. But still, I think, there's no chance Roglic will be in the Tour. The brutal Giro isn't just hard physically, but also the roller coaster emotion, I think Roglic needs to decompress mentally from GT riding.
