GOING OUT OF BUSINESS: A Final Store Tour of Sears at Newport Centre in Jersey City, New Jersey

Opening in 1987, this was the last remaining location within the state of New Jersey. The Store itself is expected to close in March/April 2024 to make way for Primary which is going on the upper level and Dave & Busters which will be taking the lower level thus triggering this latest closure. So sit back and relax and watch as do a full documentary of both the interior and exterior of the soon to be former department store.

Remember when my nearest Sears was closing in 2019. I still miss it. It was a huge part of my childhood to go to Sears. When i was kid, i had a blankie like every other kid. Wanna know what i called my blankie? Sear Sears, because i was only three and that was my favorite thing to say.

I honestly think Sears is toast. With that large selection of appliances and inventory on hand to take with, nobody is shopping there. The name itself is dead. And that's sad but the reality of our times. Same as with you, a trip to Sears was always 'I want to go along' when my folks were going. I'd hit up the popcorn counter on the way out for a big tub of their 'buttered' popcorn and there was so much to see. My grandfather, my mom and my brother all worked for Sears - at their Homan Ave HQ in Chicago, or the store at Six Corners, or Sears Oakbrook.

Thank you so much for this! Heard that it will not be reopening and they will be focusing stores in washington, texas, florida and california. That means the store in Braintree may be closing soon as well!

I'd love to have one of those lighted exterior signs. When a Montgomery Ward near me closed and the mall was being demolished there was a branded sign by the pickup entrance on the back side that I'd have loved to have. I should have asked because it probably just went into the dumpster.

Geez... the appliance dept looks like Home Depot or Lowes and it's deserted. What are they gonna do with all that inventory? I think though it would be cool to kind of map out the floor where Dave & Busters is going, and then later on eat there and say 'Where we're sitting is right where the refrigerator display started.' I assume those columns are going to remain, being part of the structure, I'd sort of number some of them and note what was right by them. I kinda like connecting now with the past.

I know EXACTLY what happened. Originally, this store was just going to downsize to one floor and primark was going to be on the second floor. Then plans changed and dave and busters wanted to be on the first floor of the Sears. So at last minute they decided to just shut down the whole store.

I guess the Otis elevator from 1987 is gonna be sadly demolished or it’s on a bucket list for getting modernized when Dave & Buster’s comes to Newport Centre. It’s been a while since I filmed it back on July 2022

That elevator going to get removed from service since Dave & Busters will be on the lower level and PRIMARK will go on the upper level... however, the freight elevator will remain!

Before my folks got married in 1948, my mom worked at the costume jewelry counter at Sears, Six Corners in Chicago. I wonder how much this store will sell off cheap and how much will get transferred elsewhere.
