As I've been studying the different ways that singers get their grit and distortion, I've come to realize and internalize that there are SO many ways to end up with great sound AND great feel.
But there are also a lot of ways to miss the mark and cause both short term and long term issues in your voice.

Something to consider as well: the heavier and more often you distort during a set, the quicker you'll get fatigued. Not to be confused with bad technique which will ruin you in a matter of minutes. After a couple hours of working on LP covers, while everything (including cleans) still sounds great, my voice is ready for a break.

This is true even with clean classical singing. You are vibrating you soft tissue in the throat. Sooner or later you will reach the point where it is no longer comfortable. Practice gives you more stamina and resilience but even profesionals have the point of no return. Don't ever get past that. As a teen i was in the music school and in preparation for a big event i have spend about 5 hours a day singing. The day of the event i spend those same 5hours with warmups and rehearsals AND then over an hour of the actual thing. Fried my voice for 2 weeks and got a nasty case of meningytidis as my abused throat got infected. Microlacerations of the upper palate and uvula are real and you don't get them only from unprofesional roaring on a concert.

As a powerlifter who makes a lot of noise at heavier weights, this came pretty naturally to me. I just imagine squatting under the bar on a heavy set, and it comes to me. Lots of breath support in that kind of heavy lifting and distortion from the compression. Ironically, the top of my squats sound like GREAT distorted notes, plus it never hurts because of the heavy vocal support!

Damn Chris, people like to say you'd be a great Cornell sucessor, but damn, you're an army knife! As far as I'm concerned Chester voice is much thinner in the Tenor spectrum, yet you were able to achieve extremelly accurate tones on the cover (even though sounding exactly like Chester/anyone is not the point at all). It's good to learn these techniques and not over work yourself on trying to get it right it took me years to get to a point where I can safely excicute a decent sounding distortion voice. I used music and my ears to recognize what the singer is doing and finding my own point of distortion. It's not about getting to the finish as fast as possible but getting to the finish able to still go again and again.

I was watching all the previous videos from you about distortion or singing aggressively. Here is what I think : i have to do this without hurting my voice. And okay someone will say : you need to be aware of how break works and make sonds as blaiden as you can. I'll tell you this : i was watching a vocal breakdown for Chester Bennington song Given up , followed all steps and it went really well. So just i am following the steps doesn't mean that I slacking off practice. I still making my progress towards singing aggressively , screaming , adding distortion to my voice without hurting it.

I've been using this method over the weekend. As long as you don't push too hard and find the correct volume, you can get that distortion. When I first started doing it, I went a bit too forced and it didn't resonate well. Being relaxed and controlled is the best thing you can. My goal is to grow it into one of my strongest tricks in the bag.😋

I was the same, I think it might be largely to do with the amount of air we are letting through to resonate the higher note. When we're up high we are already using more air and maybe a little compression too just to hit the note before we add grit, so gritting the note is easier. I found with the lower notes, I can get them to grit up now but I have to consciously let more air flow through to let the note keep resonating and ensure it doesn't break. Almost feels like you're pushing harder from the stomach, and compressing more then on the high notes too. Keep the note forward and your brain aware of keeping your face relaxed. So far this has had some kind of result for me in getting lower, grittier notes, but I do still have a long way to go control-wise and I'm sure others have more enlightening tips than I!

I can add distortion to my voice but it only lasts for one note. My screams are pretty well and sustainable but this is one thing I have to practise. I do Linkin Park covers, so this is definitely a helpful video for me.

It does much better in THIS format, where I'm offering some tips and singing advice and then sneak the mini cover in at the beginning... I'd LOVE it if the standalone cover videos did better... I really appreciate this Chris! This is exactly what I was looking for, Chester Bennington is my favorite singer and I try to learn what I can from him. It's a very difficult challenge tho. The main problem I have is with the Distortion in how using false folds compression I am just getting that buzzing noise. Is there any way to turn that buzzing noise into the more dry sounding rasp that you can hear chester, and yourself, use in songs like the song you chose "Somewhere I belong"? Great video, as always, Chris! Also, PLEASE record and post that Somewhere I Belong cover, it was just AMAZING! One question: I have some problems with opening my mouth. Usually I sing with a reaally small opening, which may be one of the reasons I struggle with high notes...but when I try to force an open mouth, it feels really unnatural and stiff (my jaw even makes a snap sound sometimes). I've searched through your videos, but I didn't find one about mouth opening...do you plan on record a video on this topic in the future? Thank you!

Awesome video man. I'd like to see a video on some of Ivan Moodys vocals. His live singing is very unique and almost odd sounding to me. Plus his use of distortion and fry are amazing in my opinion. I'll keep a close eye out in case you cover him one day.
