Tons of respect to Ken. As someone who semi-wrecked their voice essentially yelling out thrash metal vocals, I just want to say listen to Ken and save your voice. This guy is killing it still at his age, and you can see he's still getting really good distortion on notes that aren't super easy to hit clean. You don't do that for as long as he's being doing it without doing it right. If he was doing it wrong, he would have lost it in his 30s like everyone you can think of that doesn't sing like they used to.

@@MrLuigiFercotti This is an old comment, but that's just not true. I started out singing three years ago (when I was 50), and I am singing rock now. I just build my voice up with the help of CVT to get the right singing technique - and I don't have any problems singing on the top of my lunges - for 3 hours in a row. I don't feel my age that way. So if anyone else reads this comment and you are thinking you are too old - then think again. It's possible to fulfil your dreams - but get a good vocal coach :-)

OMG 😳
@stogeez2637
@stogeez2637 2 жыл бұрын
@@noverrr4508 nope, he said it in the video. In a nutshell you’re squeezing to get these sounds, but not super hard it’s very light, imagine lifting something heavy and going “huh”. Yk how you get that gritty sound when that happens? Thats where it comes from, but thats also just one kind of distortion, and you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT try to do it with what I just told you. It doesn’t have to be this guy however I would highly highly recommend him, but as long as they’re a good vocal coach and there is a lot of evidence to prove that. Then you should take their lessons and do what they tell you to do if you’d like to use vocal distortion. Trust me I blew my voice out before it sucks and its scary, luckily I’m young and have recovered pretty well. It’s just gonna take a lot of practice to get good. As for Fry, the sound the grudge makes is fry, if you can make that noise, you basically do that and gradually increase the amount you’re leaning into it. A good representation of this in a song is the part before the last chorus of Miss Murder by AFI. Hope this helps bro

When i saw them live in 2012, half of their first song (rock or bust) he was in falsetto and it was awkward. Then halfway through he somehow activated the grit. Listen to ballbreaker or stiff upper lip, you can hear that his voice is so ruined (think the sqwuaking thunderstruck voice to now) his falsetto is near naturally gritty. He used to clench his fists singing high, now he's really loose. Tl;dr. He ruined his voice and uses his messed up gritty falsetto to acheive grit. Just a theory

I used to scream/growl and lose my voice afterwards until I started watching Ken’s videos. You will sound better and save your voice, so you dont sound like Brian Johnson when you get older.

Yup. This is a lesson I learned the hard way about a decade ago. I finally realized that I needed to practice singing clean first, and then put the distortion over the top of that. Lucky for my throat, I wasn't in a full time band, so there was plenty of time to recover.

I did watch a video at one point about breath control exercises which I found useful. One that helped me extend my breath time was where I would time how long I could hold a "tsssss" sound, not using vocal cords, just breath through tongue and teeth. It comes back to what Ken said about not letting the breath out too quickly, it's controlled release like a pressure valve. Seeing how long you can go before stopping can exercise the ability. May cause lightheadedness which is normal, just be sure to breathe normally in between until feeling normal again. Breathing exercises can also be useful for anxiety and improve asthma (although not cure it), it just needs to be allowed to be done at the pace it's comfortable at. It's like blowing up a balloon, it can be hard but each (paced) attempt can improve the stretchiness of the balloon and strengthen the muscles involved, eventually being easier, but not if you go hell for leather in one go expecting instant good results. Perhaps you can look into breathing exercises and find something right for you.

I know a guy who does beatbox, and for doing robot voice he told me he growled, then put it higher in pitch, and finally got it really nasal, with his nose, I tried it and it was really interesting for me, then I put it higher and higher in pitch till it wasn't really recognized on my voice as robot voice, that's how I learned to put a little disto on my voice without hurting myself, I'm not a really really good singer but it gets me trough, I can't do the most distorted thing tho, but for what I usually sing it's more than ok

In a lot songs is possible using an distortion only in short parts. Usually in high notes. And pure the tone can be used in 80% of track. But because distortion is much more emotive sound, the listener better remembers high distorted parts. This parts hitting her heart. Therefore is possible save protect our voice, but final effect is still good. Changing of color of voice it bring nice changing of registers, which is always important value of our singing.

I'm really trying to get it down good how both Ken Tamplin and another man name Chris Liepe show how to sing with natural distortion without hurting my throat a little bit. I hope my voice won't get destroyed as long as I stop for a long enough time, if I'm somehow still not being able to get how to do it. Songs of mine I'm making are hard rock with hip hop mixed, so I feel I need to sing using at least enough natural distortion on my voice to have more rock sounding vocals. I know I haven't done too much singing good clean. If I really have to just sing clean for a long enough time first, then I hope the amount of fans of my own I at least do have will still like my singing in finished mixes of my songs when I get them out there. I'm still glad for these tutorial videos being put out on KZbin by Ken Tamplin and other good singing vocal teachers, to have the information here on KZbin to try to learn from on the right way to sing with distortion. I really wish I was able to get things going better enough income wise to take Ken Tamplin's course, but I'm not being able to right now. Just one more thing I like to say to Ken Tamplin on here, is lately your song called All The Kings Horses came to my mind this morning and I thought oh yeah that's a also a really cool sounding song, I gotta listen to that one. And so I did.

I still need to learn control to master it. My band is getting ready to record and I’m trying to up my game before it’s my turn for vocals. This is one of those skills so many instructors can demonstrate, but can’t tell you exactly how they do it. My old vocal coach told me to practice ‘Man in a Box’ so I was so happy to see Gabriela’s version. Perfect example of how females can sing with aggressive technique too. That’s the kind of music we make, so I’ve GOT to nail vocals down to match. KZbin and Google listen to you while you speak it's why they ask for access to your phones microphone. I was talking about a mates hat the other day, and up popped D&G hats. So er, it's not freaky it's just Google spying on you. Fact.

Brilliant! There's a lot of different level of distort voice like James Hetfield, Kurt Cobain, Acdc, Dio etc. Some people have natural talent without taking any class but what you did explain this is a serious thing to explore.

I tried practicing clean vocals on Like A Stone by Audioslave, and I actually managed to maintain clean notes but at the part where theres a bit of compression, my voice breaks naturally (although im really close I believe). This was really helpful

Gradually adding distortion in stages is a helpful tip! What does in feel like in the body to add distortion? Is it sort of like how one might squeeze their abs if someone was going to punch them in the stomach? (I do know how to support with my diaphragm and can get a good clean sound)

See I love blended distortion but I recently discovered a mix of distortion and falsetto in my voice that I am trying to get control of . It is fairly easy for me to engage distortion and I am learning to have control over it almost better than my 'clean voice' . I'm not a professional so I am pretty sure I am saying this wrong but I want all three sounds in my voice at the same time on command . How do I achieve this ?

Hi Ken. Looks like you're going to be my teacher at some point! I'm a totally amateur singer that has been singing along with metal tunes for about 40 years now. I've developed this slight growl that comes through on most of the tunes I sing. I can turn it on and off at will and usually use it on certain lines. I'm totally undisciplined and will grab your course when it fits the budget. Until then, I'll be soaking up your videos!
