I think this one is so popular for reactions because it shows off several specific aspects of Tatiana's ability to perform and entertain. For one, you get to see all of her expressiveness and energy on stage, the way she talks to the crowd, the way she acts out the lyrics at times. I also think this is a good live song, thanks to that bridge with the sustained part at the end that got you excited. You can hear it on a studio recording but to see someone hold it that long live is special. And one more thing I like to see people point out is how out of breath she is at the end, and how she showed no sign of fatigue during the performance. She checks all the boxes.

Tatiana always makes sure her growls have good annunciation. She spent a ton of time to develop that. She has said she wants the listener to understand her growls as she puts her heart into her lyrics.

Worth noting from the start that this is the last song in the set and she still has this much power. Good sign she’s doing it healthily. One thing I love about Jinjer from a compositional standpoint is they don’t pigeonhole themselves into writing songs in whatever key the guitars are tuned to. You can see they’re somewhere in the middle of the neck most of the time on this song.

One of the best modem metal performances out there right now. Her breath control, dynamics, and switching between clean and harsh vox is masterful, and above all, she's putting on a show. It's like an extreme metal opera.

“Pit of Consciousness” live in Kiev is a very well composed song and displays the lower end of Tatiana’s growls very nicely. “I Speak Astronomy” (OMV) is another well composed song with a nicely done video that displays her singing voice more than growls with some soaring vocals near the end.

I think Captain Clock Live from Resurrection Festival is great, Teacher, Teacher just released a new live remix today, I Speak Astronomy Live is also great because Tatjana Live is incredibly good, the whole band! But the really nice thing is, if you know the lyrics you can hear it even better, but it's also unbelievable how well you understand Tatjana word for word with extremely deep growls, like no other Girl live on stage can do! Tatianna is completely self taught as a vocalist, and when she taught herself to scream, she wanted to sound as deep as a man. I love the guitar and bass on the middle slow part of this song... just put it in a loop, and I'd listen all day.

@badm0t0rf1nger Жыл бұрын
Great point regarding her harsh vocals still being intelligible- the diction is remarkably good, yes... but I feel part of it is in her writing- she never tries to squeeze in too many syllables thru harsh sections, which gives the listener's brain more of a chance to pick up what she's saying with those very deliberate syllables. Given that she is handed pretty much finished demos of the music the lads come up with (& my goodness it can be very *quite* cerebral... angular, choppy time signatures and complex mixed-mode melody & harmony), I don't think she gets enough credit for her writing. For her to consistently come up with what she does over the lads' music is quite remarkable imho! :)

Yeah @mrtinothemib has it right. Tatiana is a unicorn all the way. She puts so much enunciation, tone, control, color, variation, intensity into her harsh vocals. Second to none in my opinion. And her cleans are so varied as well, so delicious. Best of all possible worlds. Yet she has no training. She has no clue how she does what she does. She doesn't take care of her voice (would not recommend). She puts herself through a torture test of intense touring, with all that can do to one's voice. She gives lots of interviews while on tour (talking is actually much worse for the voice than false cord screaming). She has even "forgotten how to scream" a few times, and had to relearn how to do it--and she says it came back differently every time! She actually said she used to do it better, but I feel she's expanded and deepened her talent with each album. Tatiana has a very special gift. She's a natural. I pray she can continue blessing us with her talent for decades to come, growing and changing and blowing us all away. She's a generational singer, like a Whitney Houston or a Stevie Wonder. May the Great Spirit bless and keep her healthy!

Awesome video. I'm going to see Jinjer play in March. I can't wait! It's cool to hear your analysis of her vocals before hearing it live. I always thought it was interesting how people's accents seem to dissappear when they sing. Have you done a video about this phenomenon? It would be great to hear your take on it. Take care Chris 💕
@ericpeterson7512 Жыл бұрын
I'm a devotee of this phenomenon. I love accents, and all the sounds the human voice can make. It's the ultimate synthesizer! I agree, many times accents that we as Americans would consider foreign tend to submerge in English pronunciation when singing pop and rock music. I haven't heard this discussed much. I think singers generally want to sing in English to reach wider audiences. And they learn to emulate English (and especially American) phonations, America often being perceived as the home of the blues and then rock n' roll. American singers influenced the Beatles and other British bands in their accents. Then those British bands influenced American bands in their sung accents. Once John and Paul sang "Baby you can drive my cah," almost no American singer pronounced an R at the end of a word for decades! The influences travel back and forth across the oceans. I like singers who let their accents shine. Some of my favorite singers have been non-native English speakers. Klaus Meine of Scorpions is my prime example--amazing voice, and you can hear the German accent clearly. Minoru Niihara of Loudness probably can't help singing English with a heavy Japanese accent--and I love it! That's another reason I love Tatiana--her accent is sometimes detectable at odd moments, like when she makes "owl" sound like "ole" in Home Back. It's cute! Tatiana's voice is many things, and cute is one of her flavors. One of my modern favorites is Missy Higgins, who accentuates her delicious Australian accent even more when she sings. Listen to "Sugarcane" from her first album and you can really hear that thick accent on the vowels. It's just one of the many factors that make the human voice so fascinating. But accents are some of my favorite things.

Yeah, this is such an impressive and emotional performance. And they were kicking off the day at 11 am too! I love the performance in Captain Clock live at Resurrection Fest even though the recording quality isn't to this standard. Great belting in On The Top live in Kiev (now Kyiv), while Pit Of Consciousness at the same show is perhaps their best video of any sort - just so impressive on every level. I love the musical composition in Who Is Gonna Be The One official live, and it's cool how Tatiana manages to maintain vocal variety in a song that is 80% growls - and some of her _low_ growls which I don't think you've heard yet. In general I'm not a fan of the mix in the live in Melbourne recordings, but Sit Stay Roll Over from that show has more of Tatiana's impressive vocal tricks than any single recording I've seen, usually she doesn't throw everything into any one song but instead keeps variety by doing some stuff in one song and other stuff in other songs, even if she mixes up what she does in each song a bit in live performances to stave off boredom in long tours. Cheers!

I stopped playing and singing professionally before in-ear monitors came on the market but I can see where the disadvantages are. Wedge monitors have their issues too of course and by the early 90s the volume wars on stage were getting pretty bad. Though they have their issues in-ears came just in time to save some people's hearing. Tatiana does fuss with them a good bit I noticed. I would definitely recommend Outlander Live at Loudfest for a good example of her style in 2015 compared to today. Wallflower is a good more recent song and Pit of Consciousness Live in Kyiv has some pretty crazy vocal stuff as does On the Top Live in Kyiv and the music video for I Speak Astronomy.

I've seen a lot of gear come and go (thank God--I'm a bassist and I'm way too old to hoss around that Ampeg 8x10 cab)! For sure IEMs are one of the key innovations of the past 30 years. Total game changer. That's what let Geddy stop using amps onstage and start using refrigerators, dryers and chicken rotisseries! We still have wedges onstage for backup, and because our guitarist likes to have "air blowing in his face" (even though he also uses IEMs; I keep telling him he should just use a blow dryer). I have one just to put my foot up on--it's not even plugged in. I just haven't had a Jinjer-style metal step riser built yet lol.

@@ericpeterson7512 I appreciate the comment. It got to a point where it got difficult to find people who wanted to do music for a living where I was based. The solution was to go to a bigger city and start over which I considered doing but being visually impaired doing that was quite an undertaking and a risk. Still I would have done it but I did have other interests (like computers). I met my wife and situations sort of made up my mind eventually. I miss playing but still I think I made the right decision. No formal schooling or training. I just learned programming and started doing that. Now going on more than 20 years. I own my own house and have four grown children. I still have a drum kit I can play but I haven't done anything with a band for a very long time. I played up to the early 90s when it was guitar stacks for days and wedges that had to rip your head off to be heard. For a while guitar players were using load boxes and iso-cabs to try to bring stage volume down but they weren't perfect solutions. in-ears would have been so nice around that time. Not to mention being able to use tracks for some things. The entire time from the late 70s until then I also did show production and there was more than one band where I sang backups from the FOH position to cover some things. I know there are some bigger bands who took the risk with the gear and took reel to reel machines on tour to do that. A lot of people probably aren't even aware that was a thing but those machines weren't meant for that. I know a few drummers who use the vibrating seats so they can feel, not just hear their kick drum. I imagine it's a different world from wedges. But yeah we used to have to push racks of CS800s uphill both ways in 6 feet of snow to gigs. Damn kids and their gadgets they have no idea.

Exactly. Apparently they were the first band on the stage that day, early set. Lots of sound problems from what I've heard. And then they had to cut the set short and end before their set was over. Other songs from the same Wacken show don't sound as great, especially Pisces in my opinion. All the more extraordinary that they pulled it all together for this high water mark performance of Perennial. You can see her struggling with her IEMs, but she powers through it and delivers a stunning performance. At the end, when she's so out of breath, I can hear the emotion in her voice. She sounds like she's almost sobbing with intensity. I love the passion she brings to her performances.

False fold growls isn't a 100% indication of how deep a person's modal voice is, per se, but Tatiana's voice being a natural alto, it definitely helps her get a few semitones deeper, since she does seem to rock back-and-forth between false folds and true fold engagement, with her modal voice definitely dropping deeper than many females can... it's what makes her vocal technique so unique, in my opinion.

Tatiana puts her everything into every song she sings when performing Live in Concert, she was slightly puffing at the end when she was talking to the audience after singing an entire Set dude! Tatiana is a Machine when it comes to powerful singing so do not under-estimate her vocal stamina & strength 'cos she'll prove ya wrong! TY for you analysis, I suppose.

This isn't even as low as she can go. There are some songs where she does those ultra deep extended growls and they go even deeper than what you hear here. As for her fiddling with her monitors, that show was plagued with some annoying tech issues. The setup of Wacken is 2 stages next to each other and bands playing on both of them at the same time at times. They had to start late due to tech issues (which is why Perennial was the set closer while it normally isn't) and they were still constantly having crossfeed issues in their monitors from the other stage.

Hello Chris! First, let me apologize for posting this comment under a couple of your videos but it's veeery important to me and I've been looking for an answer to this question for years and am inhumanly frustrated so I really wanted your attention 😅 I know that you usually don't take requests but could you make a video about what I think is a really important topic?: Early vs Late briding and how to make your mixed voice beefier? (I know that you made videos on how to make your mix beefier but it's not exactly what I'm talking about - I also mean tone wise) A perfect example of this is a song sang by two different vocalists of Iced Earth(notice the very obvious difference in tone when they sing "the blood is the life" - Barlow sings it much closer to how Chris Cornell would sing it and Stu Block seems to be using more of a Halford/Falsetto approach) This is the beefy one(Barlow): kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJClZnicqM2phZIsi=XqBwnngp34ivQq7N And this is the weaker one(Block) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaCcanljZqmVhc0si=hrjRH2CcWDXwapCw I don't think it solely comes down to their voice types as it is evident that Barlow puts in a lot more of his chest voice Almost like reaches down for it I also think that Cornell did it too hence his vocals had that "weight" that's very hard to replicate If you or anyone has any insight on how to do it please feel free to let me know Thank you

So, we know Jinjer are gods of Prog Metalcore, but have you ever wondered what they would sound like if they tilted more towards Prog Deathcore? Not Face Yourself - they're pure Dearhcore. Have you ever heard of Monochromatic Black? Brilliant band from the States. Try Abaddon, Wall of Dissonance, Cerulean, or Disillusioned. Banger songs, incredible vocals.
