Fun facts; Tatiana was in a reggae band that did Nirvana covers before she joined Jinjer, and her nickname was Booyah. So this song is really a bit of a throwback to those earlier days of her singing career.

Tatiana, is a very versatile vocalist she can do it all, more songs which I recommend by Jinjer are: "Perennial" live at Wacken Open Air Festival from 2019, "Teacher Teacher" the official music video, "Just Another" the official music video, "On the Top" and "Pit of Consciousness" both live in Kiev, "Vortex" the official music video, "Who is Going to Be The One" live, "Home Back" the official music video, this is a personal one for the band as it's about the invasion of the part of the Ukraine which they're from by Russian troops in 2015, "Call Me a Symbol" the official music video.

"Just Another" was the first song I heard by Jinjer, around 5 years ago. I was instantly hooked. I kinda have this idea of a perfect metal vocal in my head. The first time I heard that song, on the very first line, I was like, "That's it. That's the perfect metal vocal. "

@@chrisliepewhat boggles my mind from that interview is how little she seems to intellectualize what she's doing. She says people have told her about fry, and she doesn't do it. It doesn't sound as if she even thinks she's using her vestigial folds! It seems clear to me that she's doing both--and lots more. I really don't think she has any clue how she does what she does. It just comes totally naturally to her. Well, with years of practice! She just feels it. Her phonation to me is unmatched. And that thing where she says she has repeatedly 'forgotten' how to scream, and had to relearn it... And it came back different every time...??? She's kind of on a different planet vocally. How is that even possible?

You might be able to provide some insight into how certain physicality on stage could help certain types of vocal techniques: JINJER - Perennial (Live at Wacken Open Air 2019) | Napalm Rebecca cords Cheers!

So glad to see you doing more Jinjer!! Tatiana is really just on another level. You may have seen in interviews that she did not have formal training, did not practice or warmup heavily, (although now I believe she is more mindful of her voice). She has stated that she waits until the last minute to write lyrics and seems to work best at the last minute. There are still so many more songs where she changes vocal textures, and with the boys they all work to blend grooves and genres effortlessly. Check out "I Speak Astronomy", "Vortex", "Teacher, Teacher", and "Home Back". Keep up the great work. You have the best breakdown of the harsh vocal technique. Hope to see more soon

I've seen a lot of people unfamiliar with this kind of music react to Pisces and remark on how Tatiana's growls sound like something that would come from a male singer. It's understandable, but I feel like in this performance, you can listen closely and hear the feminine nature of her voice even in her screams. Then you really start to appreciate how femininity can be badass in its own way.

Well said! The power of femininity is one of my favorite things about Tatiana. She's empowering. She has said that when she started screaming it sounded like a girl and she didn't like it. Hello from 🇨🇭 to the USA 🙂 Always a pleasure and great to see and hear a reaction and analysis as well as learn something from professionals like you or, like years ago, from Elisabeth from the charismatic voice! Your first two reactions and analyzes about the band Jinjer and of course especially about Tatjana, who for me has been the absolute phenomenon in the world of female heavy metal genre singing for 12 years, are really excellent! In my over 25 years of live music concerts and festival work, I feel like I have seen and heard almost all of the biggest, best-known female metal singers live on stage, often several times over the years! They all deserve recognition, respect and appreciation for their skills, especially since some of them are at home in very different genres of heavy metal when it comes to their vocal style! But what Tatjana von Jinjer now shows live on stage, in my opinion, puts every other one in the shade when you hear it live and see what an incredible range of musical styles and types of singing she can cover straight away, I have that myself with a male Top act singer ever seen....She can sing beautifully with clear angelic voices, spoken vocals, rapping / hip hop, funnky styles, R&B, reggae and of course everything combined with such low growls and clean high screams! For me the absolute unicorn in the female heavy metal genre as a whole, especially amazing on stage live! In the studio, everyone sounds world-class and, with a little help from their sound engineer and technology, they all sound world-class, experienced live on a stage! Not with Tatjana, she sounds real live on stage like in music videos and the album! It would be great for you to take a look back, 10+ years (2011/12) from Jinjer and Tatjana with their development to see and hear an analysis, reaction and professional opinion! For me personally it's also great to follow because I look after some of these great singers and personalities through my work in personal protection, security attendant, driver, supervisor for many hours a day and so I'm very close to them, see, hear! And I saw and heard Jinjer around Tatjana for the first time privately as a viewer in 2012 and was captivated by the band as well as Tati because I realized that this band is above average in talent and will certainly get even better over the years...And Tatjana Also, she was already bad 🍑 and 🤯 and nowhere near her best/highest level! And when you hear her live on stage, it blows your mind how incredibly deep and clean she can sometimes growl and you can still understand every single word, and she can switch back and forth in a second in such a high quality, that In my opinion, no female metal genre singer can ever do it like that, especially live on stage....In the studio, different story, they all sound perfect! The whole "package" as a front woman, singer, this insane stage presence, and then she also runs back and forth on the stage, singing, growling on top of that 🤯🤘🏼 That's what makes this little, petite woman such a unicorn 🦄 in this metal Lady's singing world for me, and I've seen pretty much all of them at least 1-2 live, Amy Lee, Floor Jansen, Courtney even Doro Pesch and everyone else well known! Everyone is great in their field and a talented singer, but many are often too limited to just one thing, very good, or simply not so clean, they can do a lot of things, but many of them are so unclean, not fully trained, practiced and educated over many years! And that's where this Tatjana makes this huge difference to many! And you see that, you hear that with her and with Jinjer live shows...🤘🏼🤗 from Switzerland to you 🙏🏼

Random off topic comment but mates of mine used to live across the road from very well known here in Melbourne rehearsal studios (Bakehouse, awesome place I had a mate get married there) & they had this ancient cat who was quite deaf & she had contact numbers for her humans on a tag. She would go around to all the restaurants in the area who would feed her. She would also hang out at the studios. One day they were just hanging out, they could hear music but didn't think much of it. Until their doorbell went. Answer the door to Nick Cave holding their cat 😅 he was apparently very nice (if you don't know who he is check him out, the weeping song is great, the mercy seat as well) & was like "so I was told this is your cat & she's lovely but she is distracting the band from practice & we're just about to go on a national tour so I had to bring her over to you" & is like omg well that was random. Apparently she was very good at curling up on like the bass head or in the drum or other not ideal places lol. Cats help with the music making process I reckon!

Ive been going to concerts regularly for over three decades and I've seen dozens and dozens of female singers and female fronted bands... I can't think of any of them literally owning the stage and captivating an audience in the same ways that Tati and Courtney (Spiritbox) do. Maybe Courtney Love at her peak...most of the time in metal, its nice to hear a woman in front, but that always stays foremost in your mind. Thats not the case with Tati and Courtney...sure, you know there are beautiful women on the stage, but, almost immediately, you are so taken by their powerful preference, that you forget you are watching a woman and are just vividly aware that you are watching a fantastic entertainer...its really impressive and I feel lucky to have seen both...

@@glebivanov6323 yes! This is one of my favorites. I keep hoping they come out with an album of that concert. From all the videos I've seen, it was amazing

Her screaming reminds me of a song I use to warm up my screams. It's called "Sempiternal Embers" by Eluveitie. It was one of the songs that actually helped me learn to scream properly.

if you look at her throat when she prepares for the deep growls you can see that she actively pulls her larynx down to make the sound lower.

You need to see some "true live" performances of Jinjer. "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019 is one of the best of them. Also "vortex" is the song, where she is going so deep with her growls. Waiting for more ;)

Awesome video, Chris. I’ve just joined the discover your voice course, it’s incredible so far. Wondering if you’d be able to react to some Sam Fender from the UK his voice is hauntingly beautiful!!!!

Other then Tatiana's amazing vocals that bassline in the verses though. So good! Great video as well Chris \m/

Tatiana has been going strong for about 15 years at this point. She is 36 now not 26 so her voice has changed slightly over that time as it does for everyone and her technique has followed those changes. It's interesting to go back to some of the earlier recordings to see that. They have a video done in 2015 Outlander Live at Loudfest which shows a real difference between now and then. Both fantastic but definitely different. She used to put a lot more grit into things for one. Compare that as live performances go to this or to Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air and she's refined her use of grit considerably. Singers shouldn't feel like just because their voice changes with age that they can't work with it to be just as good.

Just subscribed to your channel awesome content btw. Found you searching for Jinjer reactions. What an amazing band! Tatiana is a vocal goddess. Was wondering if you would be willing to check out Unleash the Archers (Awakening), Brittney Slayes is another amazing metal vocalist that is absolutely worth checking out. Keep up the awesome work!

The smirk was because of something her cat was doing, and the fist bump was something the cat knocked over.

hmm, source? The smirk was totally because she nailed the scream and the punches were for us (in a playful manner).

@BTAColorado well, my version: - punches - for us obviously; - second smirk directed down - for cat who walked nearly; - first smirk - for someone who stayed to the left of the camera. It could be Alex, I guess.

Messing with her in-ear monitors is ALWAYS the left ear, never the right...
@coder4liberty3 ай бұрын
Probably because she's usually holding the mic in her right hand. There could be a number of reasons why she takes them out or messes with them including thef fact that running monitors for someone who uses in-ears is not easy or anything like getting wedges to work. If she's at a festival and the band has no control over who runs monitors she gets what she gets unless or until the band is at the same level as a Slipknot or Metalica.

This was recorded when Tatiana (and Eugene) were stuck in LA due to one of the pandemic lockdowns and couldn't leave the US (Roman and Vlad managed to get out in time and flew back to Ukraine to start working on the Wallflowers album). So, you're right, Chris, underproduced is the right word here: just a "booth" improvised with a hung black cloth in some room at Alex Lopez's house in LA, a mic, a pair of Marshall headphones, a camera, Mr. Pepino (the cat) and of course, Tatiana. That was all it took to record this one-take. No fancy studio rooms or technology like in many other vocal one-takes. 🙂 During that period she also recorded a cover of Nirvana's "Territorial Pissings" with Alex on guitar and drums and Eugene on the bass, and collaborated with Suicide Silence (Alex's former band) on a cover of Alice In Chains' "Man In The Box".
