Dude, so many people don't "get" Gerard's voice because of his new jersey "banshee" thing, but you GET it. It's not your run-of-the-mill rock voice; there's so much theatricality and whimsy to it, and unless you really *listen* to him like you did here, you can't *hear him* y'know? People were so focused on the emo that they overlooked him as a fantastic freaking vocalist. It's just so nice to be validated, lol.

Gerard is such an insane singer because he doesn't even focus that much on what he's doing, I can imagine him being like the "Yea I'm just gonna sing and see what happens" type of guy. But he has so much emotions while singing and so much commitment to his music the he can literally sing anything at it would sound amazing, he can read the back of a shampoo bottle and it would make me cry. I bet all my money he doesn't even know he's this complicated xd When he's live ( at least on MCR concerts ) he does so much, he interacts with the crowd, he is all over the stage, runs around, acts like his sassy self and yet he still sings like a fucking god. Only Gerard can do that

I completely agree. He has no clue... He's stumbled on sensations that work for him just by being him and exploring his own voice, but he has no idea what he's doing. Not many people are this fortunate or bold... so we have to take the approach of introspecting based on what people who are more naturally experimental and self aware with their voices. also, if you didn't already know what Gerard is screaming in "Sleep", he's saying "WAKE UP" repeatedly. Major props to Rob Cavallo for the sound on that record. There's always small details in their songs that enhance it once you catch them!
@Fluffylover1214 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed this, very helpful to understand what he’s doing to sound like that. Fun fact about “Sleep”: most of what he does in that song is just to help build the imagery that is the point of the song- it’s supposed to give that stereotypical dream imagery where everything is like hazy and ripple-y. That’s the picture they’re trying to get at with this song since it’s from a concept record. That’s why he falls off that note on “sleep,” and he screams “wake up!” at the end but it’s buried under the guitars because that part is supposed to be like someone from outside the dream is breaking through telling the protagonist to wake up.

I am 65 and just discovered My Chemical Romance a couple of months ago. (just bought the Black Parade CD) I'm going through a breakup after 11 years with someone and truthfully, I was looking on KZbin for "I don't love you anymore" and "F**ck you" songs to wallow in my brokenheartedness... I came across Gerard Way singing "I Don't Love You," and was knocked out by his voice. (The song itself is beautiful, musically, but the lyrics creeped me out a little re: "needless beating" and "fix your eyes and get up, while you can"). (The other song I "resonated with" was kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJmteYh9ZrljgbM by Kailee Morgue) I first listened to/watched the official video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqrMYY2cqq58rNE ) , which is very cool indeed. But then I found the "out take" version ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3nEg2qkZbGVeLM ) and loved the second part ( 4:11) where he just goes bananas (same soundtrack, different visuals). So, I wish you had included this song in your video because his vocals in this song are absolutely beautiful and he does a lot of interesting stuff. In this song, and in a couple of others, he seems to be emulating some of the old-timey style of Elvis and Frank Sinatra. In the official video of "I Don't Love You," there's a brief image of him standing on a hill striking a very Elvis pose. Well, thank you for this video. I found it really interesting. I used to sing when I was a kid and then for some reason, got really weird and self-conscious in my 30s and gave it up. I don't know if I'm too decrepit at this point, but now that I'm back to being footloose and fancy free (my ex was a controlling, gas-lighting narcissist who sucked all the joy out of my life -- however, as they say in The Holy Grail, "[He] turned me into a newt, but I got better." ), I've been thinking of getting involved in the local community choral group (safety in numbers). I love the physical sensation of singing. When I was a kid, people (including other kids) were always asking me to sing something and I liked being able to bring others pleasure in that way. (Sometimes I felt shy, though, and sang with my back to my "audience"! )

In the new song by motionless in white “another life” in the chorus chris sings a high note witha weird blended rasp. Could you explain this technique and how he does it. Ive watched your tutorials and its not quite it and im really interested in getting this mixed sung yell perfected

Thank you so much it feels a lot more right to sing along him right now, ad honestly you're the best vocal coach there is on KZbin right now, I'm a total beginner and you helped me learn a lot in a short space of time. Keep up the good work

Had no idea Gerard had this level of a voice until it was said in this way. Thanks for the explanation because he’s a performer I love to watch. I’m just a casual shower singer
