Yea. They dont like the way lateralus sounds. Sounds way to digital. Thats why they did 10,000 days by tape then transfered it to digital. It really does sound too mechanical. But 10000 days sounds soooooo damn good.

Fun fact, for one of the Tool albums, Maynard just straight up hated the vocal booth because he hated the way the studio felt. Like "the ambience" or "vibe" so he just went to a completely different studio against the labels wishes hahahaha Hey he killed it tho!

great analysis! one of my "handwarmer" songs^^ another vocalist I would recommend for a video is karnivool's ian kenny. many say he sounds like maynard but imo he is more deliberate during softer parts and also more versatile overall. songs that show his range: roquefort, simple boy, the refusal, fear of the sky.

Love and gratitude 🖤. Maynard's style of singing is to use his voice as an instrument, wherever it fits best in a song. He can be subdued in the background, or he can deliver a powerful, in-your-face lead. And everything in between.

Looking at the vinyl / packaging of albums is HUGE. It helps visualize what the sound is leaning towards. Ever since digital music and streaming started, artwork felt so separated from the music. I try and make a point to look at the album art while listening so I can get a better idea of what the musicians are trying to accomplish thematically and it makes a huge difference, especially with understanding the different 'characters' the singer is trying to capture in their voice.

And also, Chris, I have met Slash, Eddie Money, Scott Wieland, Nuno Bettencourt, etc, in person due to my boyfriend's notoriety in playing directly with them. We saw Tool twice together and once apart. I have gotten pointers from some of the best of my TIME- especially since he now tours exclusively with Tesla and sometimes Buck Cherry and Puddle of Mud. My dream, as he and his current and former bands do NOT think is out of reach at all, is to sing harmonies or even a main verse or two with "anyone" as they have told me.

Thanks for another great look into what's going on here! Those really help me get an idea of what I 'should' be aiming for when singing myself, since you obviously never get a fully produced sound in a single take. One Maynard tune I'd love to see you tear down is 3 Libras from A Perfect Circle's first album. It's a totally different vibe from his other stuff, but there's a ton of nuance in what he's doing there.
@LAlves912 жыл бұрын
Maan, what an awesome video, Chris! This is one of my favorite Tool songs, his vocals here are just amazing! I feel like he's telling a story and as he's telling it he gets angrier and angrier...and all those other vocal lines (soothing and a little melancholic at the same time) kinda merge together in one feeling by the end! I'll try and record this one as a learning experience, I'm sure it'll be one hell of a lesson in singing, harmonizing and mixing! One request: can you make an analysis (maybe even with isolated vocals) on the band STARSET? I really like them, and I feel like they use so many different textures and mixing skills, it would be awesome to see it! Thank you!

As many times as I’ve heard this song, I never realized how many vocal layers he used. The way his voice sounds singular in the mix, but is layered with so many octaves on the acapella is quite interesting. Makes me wonder how he pulls this off live?! I’ve always noticed he has a pretty lengthy set of vocal fx live…maybe he’s even using a harmonizer or something live in his vocal chain?
@arsenije_wav86202 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, he doesn't pull it off live. He still sounds amazing, but you can hear how much thinner it sounds live. Tool should bring back vocalists on tour just like Pink Floyd used to do.

Hey Chris, excellent breakdown here. Maynard is of course fantastic. I wonder if you'd be willing to do this for the APC sing Sleeping Beauty -- I find this to be the most challenging song in Maynard's catalog. It's not particularly high vocally, but the chorus lives at that vocal break point -- F4/F#4. The vowel shapes I think make it extra challenging -- all this on top of it being a fantastic song! Thanks for what you do, Chris!

Chris, I would be HONORED to work with you as my mom has said that I harmonized with the Mama's and the Papa's since I was LITERALLY 5. I can find a harmony in ABY song and Tool is my favorite band ever. Please reach out as I believe in my heart of hearts that even if I cannot be a LEAD singer, I can CERTAINLY be the harmony. My man's band name is Bad Marriage and they are insane- insane enough for the lead singer to want me to help write and sing harmonies. It's my life dream to be a singer, and I KNOW I have the chops. My mom was a professional singer for a long time but I have a lot of different texture than her. Please, please, get in touch. Love your stuff man. Peace, LP IN BOSTON

Maynard not only gets music and the role of a singer in a bad, but he gets the archetypal source of things. He is a brilliant, brilliant creative genius and he has been that way since at least his early 20's. Obviously he has gotten better over the years, but that man understood life from a very young age and it shows.
