Not true, they're not rock solid. They're like any other price point $100-150 reels. 2 of mine, both 2500 size, the anti reverse clutches failed, the plastic housing on their generic AR bearing cracked and let go. I do not recommend the BG, at least in the smaller sizes with the selectable AR bearing.

IRT reels have impressed me the most out of any reel I've ever used. I went on a charter this September for Red Drum. It was one of the first days that the biggest drum were starting to school in Hatteras Inlet. My wife ended up hooking a large drum, on the order of 48". It was stripping drag like crazy as the size reel and line we were using was geared more towards pups or trout. The reel continued to perform flawlessly for over 20 minutes of continuous abuse until we were able to run the drum down and get it over the side of the boat. At one point it was nearly 100 yards from the boat as i was fighting a drum 3/4 that size myself. The captain apologized as he didn't realize there were drum that size in the school we found. But, to me, it was awesome to see a fight like that on such a light set-up. The most amazing thing was the reel was still in awesome shape. A reel that small should have been a wreck after going toe to toe with a drum that size in fast current for that long. The captain loved them and said the reels have a lifetime warranty with full replacement if they can't be repaired. He also said you can even send them in once a year to have them serviced. They are costly but will last a lifetime.

Thanks for sharing! I'm too lazy to read all comments but want to tell you that issue with your Sustain usually happens when lube in roller bearing becomes too sticky (due to sand or water or grease leaked inside the roller bearing). Usually it could be easily fixed by re-oiling the roller bearing. It's better to use Shimano oils (I had bad experience with other oils - they become too sticky on low temperatures and roller bearing fails again).

Good Review supports my opinion, Never had a problem with my Penns. The one shamino a big live linner for King, it's smooth but I had to replace bearings. Some of my Penn spinners are from the 1980's one from 1979 and all still work with no new parts needed, had to wash them every now and then and take them apart and grease them about every 5 years but they just always work. The only Penns that done work are the ones that leave the boat and end up on the bottom.

That anti reverse issue has happened to me on a $20 reel and the issue was a simple lack of grease. Cant tell you how many times I had a big lake trout on and would let go of the handle to have it backfire. Then when I took the time to open it up and see that it was lacking grease and would sometimes get stuck open, I was laughing as I greased it and have had no problems since, its my Dads reel and it still works 2yrs after repair.

I've been a big fan of the Penn Fierce since its introduction. Amazing reel for the price. I currently have a 3000 and 2500 model of the second generation. The only thing I didn't like about the first generation Fierce was that ridge that was on the part that goes on the reel seat of a rod. That gave me a lot of discomfort on my right middle finger while holding the rod during fishing. The only occasional issue I've had with my current Fierce II reels is the tightness of the bearings. That happens only if the reel has gotten wet for a long enough period of time, such as rainy days or waves constantly soaking it. But as long as it fully dries and I give it a decent amount of cranking, it's back to normal.

Man, I hate to make a judgement just from one video, but it seems like you are pretty careless with the way you handle your gear. If you threw my gear around like you did in this video with your favorite reels, I'd disowned you. With issues like binding aside, I don't care what you buy, treat your gear better and it will last longer. I guarantee you. I have some $60-$150 reels that I've owned for 15-20 years now that are still going strong and are still as smooth and fully functional as the day I bought them. And some of them have been used endlessly for chinooks, steelhead and carp. A little pride of ownership and respect for your gear goes a long way. My arsenal is living proof. Peace and goodwill.

$ price never really tells the story of how well a fishing reel will perform rather the angler and their skill levels. Within reason of course for the fish size range the reel was intended, you can keep a lot of reels going a long long time. Tons of great instructional online how to maintain and folks still tend to just let their reels die early deaths from lack of maintenance. Deal on newer reels is how light you can go and still maintain power and control. the lighter you go with same range the higher the price

When you are hammering fishing day in day out and spending $200+ on a reel, you expect it to take as much of a thrashing as you do. I have some old reels that just need the drag washers replacing from the 80's and I also have some reels that have ceased that I got in the late 90's. I looks after and service all my reels, but I would expect a penn slammer 3 or shimano seragosa to take everything I throw at it, and they do! Different styles of fishing have different demands is all.

The new Daiwa Black Gold series is one of the best reels Ive used. Under $200 and best reels in that market IMO. Strong, light, super smooth and durable. As far as classic reels, the older Daiwa BG series are tough as shit. Not light, very mechanical, but runs flawlessly Daiwa hasnt change the deaign and still sells the "BG" series reel exactly the same as they did 20 years ago. STOUT reel where you can easily buy individual parts if need be. Those two reels are the ones I always come back too

good vid homey! got two fishing trips under my belt now with the penn fierce II (2500 series, even though it's not in the review). paired with med/hvy berkley lightning rod spinning. one saltwater trip one freshwater trip. skunked on my last saltwater trip. 21 lb. flathead (and some 10's, and some 15's) on the last freshwater trip. so far, very good! tight lines kid! much love from the cape fear river basin!

I have several old Penn spinning reels that I have been using heavily for 20+ years with minimal maintenance. They date from when they were made in Philadelphia still.

Good stuff I have 2 pflueger presidents for crappies on ultra light rods and they’re awesome for $40-60 if you want to look into a workhorse surf or kayak look into a penn spinfisher mine is actually the baitrunner and for under $200 it’s a full body sealed reel I’ve had it in the Chesapeake bay with me (don’t ask) and when I got home to break it down to clean it was literally empty of salt great reel ... great video I like the equipment stuff and I think most fisherman are gear junkies also

**I tried the kast-king blades out of sheer curiosity... Try one of their reels and tell me what you think. 3 years, straight salt, no failures other than 2 or 3 premature bail closures during casts. The Kodiak might be more your needs seeing how much you fish and how rough you put them through the paces.

Ya gotta maintain'em. And it's very likely you expose them to above-typical usage. You change your oil in your car I'd assume... Your theory of swollen drag washers causing reel bind up is an impossibility. The drag washers sit in a cup inside the spool and can affect only the rotational drag performance of the spool; since as well the spool is mounted atop the spool shaft & merely goes up and down with the shaft. Pinion and bevel gear binding is a condition within the enclosed gear-case portion of the reel, and appears due to bad lube, sticky/damaged bearings, gear or shaft misalignment, etc. Or in some cases the handle cone rubbing on the collar of the gear case beneath (due to bad clearance or a crumbling of the plastic handle-cone internals altering the clearance above the housing collar). Find a buddy who fiddles with reels and save yourself some moola on those pricey spinners. Broken anti-reverse can be a need for a new rotor roller bearing (they do wear out and skip due to big fish muscles) or sometimes the activator spring on the anti-reverse switch has simply come off. You can determine, often solve, many problems just by removing the rotor and checking things out.

This commit is for Sea Money, I am 69 years old and have been fishing since I was 10 years old, I haven't caught as many large fish as you but I have had my share, I have had my share of bad spinning reels also, My main reel I used back in the '50s was a Mitchell 300 for freshwater and a Mitchell 308 for saltwater, Yes they would break after a season or 2 but I would always send them back to the factory for a rebuild, Some would send me a new reel and others would charge a small fee but knew parts, I have 3 Garcia Mitchell reels made in Sweden, a Cardinal 4 by Zebco and a Shakespeare reel for trout, As you see I don't buy any reel too expensive, But I still own these reels and they have done fairly well, I still use them and some ate 40 years old to brand new, I guess what my point is you don't have to spend $200.00 on a fishing reel to have fun, I wish I could make my living fishing, But if you are looking for top grade and reliability you're going to have to spend alot more than $200,00 for a reel, Then there again I know of no reel that is bullet proof, But if you try you might get lucky, Good fishing to you, Danny Jett

If you want to make the kayak reels nicer pick up a couple jigging world power handles. Makes it so much easier than paddle handles. They also do chess bucktails and offshore lures. One of the nicest stores on the east coast. Second behind tackledirect for me.

A new Shimano performs slightly better compared to a new Penn. After five years the Penn performs slightly better than the Shimano, if they are equally maintained. Penns can be abused more and maintained less IMO.

Even a VanStaal will have issues once in a while when you fish as hard as you do. Deff worth the investment but you still need to fork out $100 everytime you need it serviced so really it's more of a luxury item to most guys who have them. I bought my ZeeBass basically to feel like a better fishermen. It kinda works for that sometimes. Lol
