Salt Water Shore fishing: Why use a Conventional Fishing Reel vs Spinning reel?

Күн бұрын

Salt Water shore fishing varies from beach fishing, pier fishing and jetty fishing to fishing brackish marshy shorelines. A conventional reel will sometimes be more effective than a spinning reel, and vice versa. Different terrains sometimes call for specialized gear. Today we are talking about when you should use conventional fishing reels and when you should use the standard spinning reel.

Sup Senko, been fishing with conventional reels for some time I realize that taking off the line laying control increases your casting distance. Here in Hawaii we use the pen senators 4/0 and up for ulua fishing with 13 foot poles. I always wet the line before casting lessons the burn on the thumbs when casting a sinker. And yes still get that birds nest even after all these years. Keep doing what you, tight lines and Aloha from Hawaii.
@RonDevito
@RonDevito 2 жыл бұрын
Are these the 100-lb fish you hurl a sinker out, then use a second rod and slide a big bait out with a mechanism that travels over the the line from the first rod?
@marquezfamily2378
@marquezfamily2378 2 жыл бұрын
@@RonDevito it's one of the ways we fish called hang bait. In the mainland they call it trolley fishing. Other ways is to cast out a heavy sinker 6oz to 12oz to break away line. Bait is slid down fish sets the hook and the slide stops at a buckle. Lead line breaks and the figh begins.

You should do a video on “how to scale your drag”. It’s basically setting the drag at a percentage of the line weights breaking strength using a hand held fishing scale, around 25%.You’d be surprised how tight your drag should be for 10-12 lb. braids.

I bought my first bait caster rod and line for $ 2. 98 cents back in the 1950's guess I'm old anyway I do a lot of surf fishing here in Florida and using top gear like Shimano's spinning reels in the $ 200 range even though I rinse after each use I found bearings have a habit of seize up or something else breaks after a year or so I send them back to factory some times in a baggie since I can't seem to repair or fix myself Shimano charges $ 25 and normally sends me a new reel which takes 6 to 7 weeks to get back what a great service but a loss of fish time. I recently purchased a Seigler SM bait caster multipier reel lifetime warranty spooled with 20lb mono and a 12foot surf rod I can cast further than my surf spinning reel outfits with less sinker weight and the control of big brutes is much better and I actually out cast an air launch bait tube guy on the beach today. I can take a part a bait caster and do a deep clean and grease without any problems but my hands and those small screws defeat me every time especially the bailer. True it takes time to learn to throw the multiplier reel but once you do you will be using the spinner much less.

Last night I hooked up with what had to be a 20# flathead. Had it at the gunwhale on the boat. It had been spinning a lot. That's what they do. At the last second it flipped it's tail and spit the lure into the boat. Waved bye bye with it's right fin then splashed me with it's tail. Was using a pretty light rig with 20# test braided line. Rhino rod. El cheepo. At least I got to see mine. ;)

Senko Skipper if you have the current they are nice to just drop and let drift. Issue here in Florida, as you explained is the wind. It’s rare that we have a fishing day without 5-15 mile an hour gusts and the backlash..... The thing is the gearing on the penn vs my van staals.. it’s actually pretty fair comparison but on the smaller reels you just don’t get the power..

Great fishing dude! Striper fishing is the best! My favorite along with Corvina. I think its amazing to be able to catch them from the bank like that! A lot less expensive than a boat for sure. But if I may, one thing I noticed that you are doing in the excitement is reeling against the drag while your fish is pulling line. This causes your line to twist up and its hard on your drag system. But your a great fisherman!
@pabpab871
@pabpab871 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. It was fun to watch! Notice that your line is twisted on your spinning reel? Every crank against the drag puts another twist on your line. You have to tighten down the drag a bit or pump the rod and take up the slack . Have fun!

Bad advice saying to use the free float tensioner to control the spool. It adds pressure to the spindle and cauae wear to the spindle. Get a reel with a braking system, either centrifugal or magnetic. The use of using the free float use to be the way untill reels were made with more effiecient systems to slow the spool down

I like the baitcasters, that is, those with magnetic brake, in addition to the normal star drag. Set to 5, it's the best of both worlds.
@ertren6
@ertren6 3 жыл бұрын
If you have proper thumb control, you should be able to set the brakes to 0. Those things cast a lot further without brakes
@maaifoediedelarey4335
@maaifoediedelarey4335 3 жыл бұрын
@@ertren6 Yes, of course, however essentially if you do that though, you are talking about the traditional multiplier reels which I grew up with (and still have), like the Penn 49, Penn 500L, up to modern day versions like the Daiwa Saltiga, Shimano Thorium etc. These are not baitcasters though, have no magnetic (or even centrifugal) brakes, and mostly lack level winders as well, it's just you, your thumb and the open reel (though the spool tension knob is crucial using those reels). So why/when would I use a baitcaster instead of them ? When I'm casting and retrieving paddletail jigheads, spoons etc whilst standing chest deep in strong tide. Use the traditional multiplier you describe only makes sense if you want to cast a fresh bait in deep onto a sandbank without much wading, and then either stand with your rod, or put it into a rodholder for another rod cast. Different things have different uses, I still use both kinds for both uses, as described.

You might consider using a true circle hook that turns in on itself. Was hard to see yours but it seemed it may not have been. Once hooked up on a circle it's rare the fish can shake it. Thanks for this video it gives me confidence to surf cast my penn 500
@Anthony-jh5xc

Not sure if anyone has ever told you but you are never supposed to crank a spinning reel if the fish is going for a run and peeling your drag. Reason: you'll get line twist. Something that will equally ruin the hell out of your day as much as overrun will. The proper way is the pull up on the rod (not high sticking) then on the way down crank. If you're not getting line twist then maybe it doesn't matter. As far as conventional reels/baitcasters if you're fishing at night into the sunrise I prefer a spinning outfit since you can't see a damn thing at night to manage the overruns. Other than that I prefer a conventional because they cast smoother, less chance of line twist, and typically are more rugged and stronger, though spinning reels now are pretty strong. Keep up the good videos and I hope the best for your success with fishing and your business. Tight lines.

looks like you culda had your drag a little tighter for that one that got away on the spinning reel. Fish only needs to pull drag on its hardest runs,.. nice video, great reel info, remember to mention the advantage of spinning reels for casting lighter rigs and lures, simce the conventional needs some weight to throw.

We call those Multiplier reels over the pond though ideally we wouldn't use one with a guide (for casting we use those ones on boats) because it reduces the casting distance, saying that I still use my cheap NGT FRL-LS3000 reel for casting and that has a guide. Also if you want to get even more distance from it try learning to pendulum cast :)

Aww was hoping you would land that striper, was going to be a good fish. The drag was a bit too loose, not enough tension. Also when the fish is running, stop reeling, you were twisting your line when the drag is spinning and you are reeling. I also fish with blood worms. When you put the blood worm on your hook, try to put the whole worm on the hook and go all the way up the hook and up the leader with the blood worm from the mouth end to the tail end with out poking out of the worm. This keeps all the juicy blood from coming out all over your hand and stays inside the worm. The worms blood will last longer in the water and have a stronger scent in the water. You can cast super far with out any of the worm breaking off as well. Sometimes I can land 2 Stripers with the same worm, as the worm will still be on the hook after it has been hit. Love the channel, love the videos. Fish On!! :D

Basic_Fishing i find the multiplier reels are the type of thing that are for people that want to look fancy when they fish like fly fishermen.lol i do all kinds of finishing and i do prefer a spinning reel in fresh water but i prefer round reels for strippers

Steve G i get out around 160yards with bate and 6oz but usually the old man that is not even standing to cast and using the same Bates as me catches more than anyone. Usually once you got a line in the water you got a chance and most of the action is 30ft to 60ft out so spinning reels are all good and some people don't think the added confusion is worth it. It's like driving stick is fun for some and not for others. Getting birds nestled with new line is like doing a burnout and sliding into a tree lol.

@@terrencewrigley8860 I use all three types of reels.When flyfishing fish will only take lures that can't be cast with either spinning or baitcasting, once some very large trout were feeding on insects that were as small as ground black pepper, if you didn't fly fish you just didn't catch any.As for baitcasting, it's no big deal to lay out long smooth casts and put a lure exactly where you want it.Spinning is the most versatile tackle there is,but it doesn't have the accuracy of baitcasting nor can it throw the nearly weightless flies to rising fish.No need to feel bad if you don't happen to baitcast or fly fish do what is most fun for you.

A reason i like spinning reels with rear drag is the ease of ajustment playing big fish!

Just a little advise brother. Stop realing when drag is slipping and you'll have better luck. Bu continuing to real when the drag is slipping you add twist to the line which puts torque on the hook

I think everyone started on spinning reels. I have used Penn conventional reels and personally I prefer a spinning reel, like I would always go back to my Shimano Sienna 2500RD or hande-me-down Diawa Opus 5000.

Awe,.. I know that feeling all too well. Better luck next time. I would suggest NOT reeling while fish is pulling drag. Still,.. Love the videos. Keep them coming.

My friend, Your "drag" too loose. When reeling you cant have line still being pulled off as much as you did. You lost pressure on the fish. I am sure you figured this out by now. Cool video enjoyed watching.

Sorry I missed the live broadcast it’s crazy right now in Sarasota Florida we got the 88 Daniel tarpon tournament so that’s been a bit nuts got the CCA tagged red fish catch and release there’s all kind of fish you can enter in to that thing and the freshwater FWC has tournament year around so it’s crazy right now love the videos I have both conventional and spinning and I just depends on where I’m fishing and for what?😎

That big fish lost on the baitrunner was because the drag wasnt tight enough to set the hook and the fish just held onto it... Where i fish there are bigger and i would set drag tight enough to reel it in but enough for the fish to pull line out

I'm a devout spinning reel user. Spinners over baitcasters at night, casting into the wind, fishing in the rain and braid makes them shine. As far as casting distance it's a wash I have thrown 24oz on a spinner you just need a leather finger guard and you can bomb it.

Wow I just sliced my finger open recently casting too heavy on braid. I’m going to look into that leather guard! Thanks for sharing!

I agree with the accuracy with casting with conventional reels but can't use braided line on them it don't pack tight on the spool like mono had to take it off my ABU 6500 CL Big Game that I souped up with ceramic spool bearings dual bearing worm gear with ceramic paw and a dual bearing drive cog for the level wind it blows up with braid and does the same with my Blue Yonder
