Nice to see someone speak something with good reasoning. I made the same choices with hooks many years ago, as well as a couple others... There is one thing with this video, & that is when replacing the trebles on a lure, the in-line hooks should be put on so that the point is towards the rear of the lure. when pulled through the water, lures with the point towards the back will simply bump over any obstacle, while they will snag into things when the point faces forward as you did in this video.
@Te0L0ser6 жыл бұрын

Thank you for the helpful information. Beginner to saltwater fishing here. I love how you explain and make it as simple as possible to learn. I have used the trebble hook on spinners for freshwater. Not a fan of the trebble. I have had a bigger fish take 2 of the hooks and it wasn't a fun time getting the hooks out.

Awesome video with a great positive message. If there is any little bit of information i can share is that switching out treble hooks is a great idea. I do a lot of bass fishing and i replace my spooks, rattle traps, rooster tails, and crankbaits with inline hooks. Hook up ratio is less but its worth it to be able to lip a bass with out getting hooked myself! Stay safe folks! Tight lines!

When replacing trebles on lures you may need to add weight to replace what you have removed for balance . This can be done by using Storm suspend strips (I think they are called in the states) also remember a sizes in singles are different to trebles. There are charts available out there to make the job easier. We also have a semi- circle hook here in UK, it’s slightly easier to get a worm on. 👍

I'm going to replace the trebles on a bunch of my lures with barbless singles. It's mostly to protect the many undersized pike you catch here, whether you want to or not. For such fierce predators, pike are kind of delicate and their huge mouths are prone to really serious hook extraction problems. Also, I troll a bit in some weedy places, so singles shouldn't harvest so many weeds. I would rather miss a strike than kill a fish.

Good to know about that in-line hook for lures! I’ve always just clipped points or replaced with a standard j-hook, never knew there were hooks specifically for that purpose. Last time I used a treble was for catfishing and it left too big of a hole in its mouth. Trebles are okay for catch and cook but I now try to avoid using them for catch and release. Best ones I’ve found are regular worm hooks for bass, and j-hooks and circles for catfish. Another tip is to pinch the barb points down to make more of a “bump” shape than an actual barb for catch and release. Thanks for this vid man!

The other day I hooked a trout on a rooster tail with a treble hook. I got the fish with all 3 hooks on the upper and lower parts of its mouth and I felt horrible. Not a big fan of treble hooks either. I also didnt know about the circle hook. I feel dumb now lol cause I've been trying to set the hook instead of letting the fish run. I switched to circle hooks because I kept gut hooking fish even with my line tight and keeping my fishing pole in hand. I watched a video about gut hooked fish and that it's best to cut the hook because the fish will dispel it and live most of the time. I'm glad I watched this. I'm a very amateur fisherman so lately I've been doing some research on fishing tackle. Again thanks for the video!

Hey guys im fairly new to fishing. Any advice on choosing the correct size/type of hook for northern snakehead? I plan to live line with minnows under a floater. Should I use leader? Mono or fluro?? Wire for the teeth??
@isaac10984 жыл бұрын
I have been fishing for about 7 years now... go with the circle hook. They tend to go after the bait, and eat it there. Maybe use about a feet or 2 of leader, steel leader. If your in an area with lots of lily pads or green stuff go for braid. But if not mono is cheaper and worth your money. But also braid has no memory so that is also very good if you might tangle up. When I go fishing for snook, tarpon, mangrove snapper, pinfish , grouper and all that stuff I use 25lb mono, 2ft of steel leader rigged with a sliding weight. It’s really effective and sometimes I don’t use the weight when I use live. But minnows sound just fine for snakehead. Have fun!

Definitely; I use the uniknot and figure eight knots for everything! That includes tying line into a spool and joining any lines! Always make at Least three coils when forming those knots;- More when tying with thinner lines! I double thinner lines to the my knots, need to concentrate a bit more then! Both knots start a bit different; the horizontal figure 8 shape,- Must be formed, before pulling tight! That way, your coils in the knot will form, (support) next to each other! Catch a big'un! 🙂 🎣🐟🎣 🙂

Trebles are a necessary evil for soft baits like cheese, dough balls and such. Not that I target catfish that often but if I do I'll probably be using treble hooks. Also I use a lot of older lures for bass just because I inherited them, old lipless crankbaits, topwater plugs, old wooden rapalas, I leave the trebles on. For other rigs I do like to switch the lures to an inline hook especially since I got into saltwater fishing, and for surf/pier fishing its usually circle hooks or ringed live bait hooks for live lining.

For live/natural bait, im in agreement 100%. I dont exactly understand the need for treble hooks and they are very awkward to bait as well. J hooks and their variants are great for targeting very small fish since circle hooks dont run so small. Just get pliers for trebles. Trebles don't gut hook & they usually stick right in the lip. If you are new to fishing don't be turned away by "danger" to the fish or yourself using them. I use them with 90% of the time for bass rarely screwing a fishes mouth. J hooks on the other hand have went straight through the eye or skull of many fish ive caught. Choosing hooks is more of an experience/preference & location thing. Like if you're fishing a grassy pond or a high concentration of seaweed trebles wouldn't be ideal.
@migesfishing77366 жыл бұрын
I didn’t start switching all my trebles until I started fishing saltwater exclusively ... I was pulling up fish in a ball of hooks and line because they seemed to be a lot more aggressive then bass ... the would have one hook in the mouth and one in the tail bent in half ... it was a huge pain ... in lines for me 😬👍🏼👍🏼

even fishing for food, I almost never lose a good trout to a barbless singlehook (CA law) ...

Like the idea on the in-line hook for the lures. I’ll be making the changes to mine...thanks.

Circle hooks are the best for the fish and barbless circle hooks are even better and the survival rate is much higher

I'm a bass fisherman mostly, but I love to hit the salt from time to time. I've been setting the hook like a bass jig every time with a circle hook and missing most fish. Hopefully I land more fish after this.
