‘I am desperate to get back to his wheel for absolutely no particular reason’ - this is why clandestine paceline is so fun, anyone can lay down the gauntlet at any point and everyone with the legs to grab it will kick for it. Our Saturday morning paceline goes 4x around a 7k loop that has two really short but punchy ramps so the attacks always fly

From the perspective of a Perth cyclist it's weird that pacelines/rolling could be considered novel in any way. Pretty much every ride above an intermediate level the group rolls turns albeit a lot neater and less surgy than this.

I think that's why he calls it an "elite" bunch ride. He's describing a hammerfest style of paceline that's half ride, half race. So, it's all fair. Riders attack, sandbag, whatever, all part of the fun. Don't think of it as no-drop group ride. It's controlled chaos. As far as I'm concerned, everything is acceptable as long as it's legal and doesn't endanger others.

Here in Argentina, we do some pacelining on wednesdays, but it´s on a stretch of road (around 25 kms long) and there is a defined finish line, so at one point it turns into a bit of a race simulation, where attacks come from everywhere .Basically the one rule is there are no rules, except keeping it safe, so no swerving, no guttering on the wrong side of the road and stuff like that.

Here I was thinking where I lived was bad.. but this makes me feel lucky. Up in Darwin Tuesday or Thursday morning we have the Hour of Power. We generally grade ourselves with the higher grades leaving first if you think you can hang on do so, if not the next group will catch you when you drop off and so on. The roads here are wide enough to accommodate us safely and generally just ride single file doing as hard a turn as we can without blowing up. No one attacks per se. Just a sprint at the end. You lead everyone else out if you happen to be unlucky enough to be on the front at the end. Better than doing laps in the park like that imo. If you drop the wheel in front of you then it's the same as down there. Definitely got to keep your ego in check and try not to drop people who have just done their turn by accelerating tol quickly when you get on the front.

Love this, and your commentary is great. I like the fact that you deliberately pivoted the discussion away from, “These are the RULES THAT YOU MUST FOLLOW IF YOU WANT TO RIDE WITH THE BIG BOYS” to “You can do what you want, just don’t expect to be the most popular dude in the park if you do [x, y, z]”. I’m sure it differs per country as well, this social-based etiquette. Between this stuff and the show with Jesse, your channel is crushing it.

its always that way at our Wednesday night worlds training race, but it is for training so the cat 2 and 3's are always trying to drop everybody and usually works because 1 or 2 of them are way stronger than everybody else. In the other group rides, we ride together and have a set route around a lake where we go hard (mostly the younger guys) and just re-meet at the store that way everybody can ride back together or go farther if they need more of a workout. our numbers are limited around here so we make do with what we got. recently i've stopped going to group rides cause I never get enough workout and its always the older guys showing up so its slower and my time is valuable. i don't want to go slower and finish in the dark when i can go a little harder and have time to do things while the sunlight is out after work.

Easy. Move slightly to the side. Keep line position but off to the side. Signal to close the gap. Hand down slightly waving it forward. Then accelerate gently to about half bike overlap or better & then move just a smidgeon more to the side before slowing down. Now you’ve carried the guy behind you into the slip of the line without a gap to bridge. This move is surefire to make friends & I’ve received many thanx doing this when riding as a guest. Sometimes as a guest I’m hesitant to ride on the front and do this at 4th wheel on every rotation to make sure I don’t keep a pace that’s too fast or slow for what they’ve planned. More than once I misjudged and thought it was a “spirited ride” and found myself unwittingly riding off the front and when I waved my elbow for relief and looked back there were no riders to be seen.

Which was quite frustrating as the only guy really riding safe and smooth was Chris's and Jesse's teammate, who's name I forgot (yikes!) who invited me to join that day after I had matched his intervals in centennial park two days beforehand :D. How much of a proof for my capabilities as a cyclist does one need in a city with 5 mil inhabitants?

@@chrisjie2127 I sort of get that, however, as someone racing here, I also know how to force a wheel if I am stronger that the guy on it. I guess, most of the guys around here do. Wow, to me what’s questionable is where you’re riding. Going full throttle in an area with such traffic, parked cars, slow moving cyclists and pedestrians is pretty dangerous. The traffic and speed differentials out there are huge. You’ve got to have some accidents happening on occasion. We have group rides like that too but we wait until we’re in the country side on quiet roads. We don’t do it within a city. No problems with the police? They don’t mind? No citizens complaining?

In western psrt of Sydney here. Paceline I follow is a lot more mellow but still fast. We do attack but it would be either in the last few kms or last lap before finishing the ride. You will know when someone from the rear starts sprinting. Pretty fun and hard to keep up. The worst part is when some cyclist joins the paceline but have no idea what to do and disrupts the paceline so its best for them to sit at the rear until they understand the etiquette.

Great summation that applies worldwide, and with a great variation of rider ages/generations. To drive home your first point even more than you already have..........do not sit 2-10th wheel if you do not have the fitness or craft to not lose the wheel in front. There is no situation where you should be there. Ride mid-pack or even the rear if you have any reason to believe you may not be able to hold a wheel.

Regarding wind direction, Earlier you say that "as that rider moves across" (3:20) assuming the lead rider pulls off into the wind and paceline "rolls through" on the right. We have ton's of wind here in FL and was told by a former pro that you should always pull off into the wind which naturally protects the paceline riders a bit as they roll through on the protected side. Your comments at 4:00 seem to contradict that? The gutter from my perspective would be exactly where he was riding if indeed the wind was coming from red shirt guys left? Is it possible that the wind was actually coming from his right side? That would make more sense. Love your videos, keep up the great work!

At 4:08 you give the wrong advice. The wind is coming from the left, so the guy in the gutter was positioned correctly. You telling him to move right was a mistake on your part. He gave everyone shelter from the wind as they would all sit on the right hand side of the wheel in front of them. This also allowed for safely dropping back after his turn.

Great content Chris, think pace-line might be over used in your presentation, seems more like your title - elite bunch ride to me than what some may call a pace-line. Sure there is some pace-line happening here, but mostly its a lot of flexing going on. Also why its okay to do something a little douche to your training partners 1. if its in good fun, 2. you know each other, because 3. the goal is to make it difficult/get a workout in. The rules mostly apply to the new riders that seem to be in the way or not paying attention to wind, Although I have been known to gutter everyone while picking up the pace just for giggles, which usually resulted in an attack directly after my pull.

I think it’s acceptable to let the wheel go if someone surges, especially if it’s a drop ride or they are riding faster than the typical/posted speed for the ride. TBH this seems like a wildly dysfunctional group. Maybe worth clarifying that this is a lot of how not to do a well-oiled pace line. A ton of massive digs with guys wildly accelerating harder rather than longer. Also when you mentioned the wind direction change now coming from the left, shouldn’t your group be pulling off into the wind, allowing the riders dropping back to eat the wind while the riders moving forward on the protected right hand side get the better draft? This seems like a brilliant video on how to make others work harder in a pace line where you want to pretend to still be working together but really just want to tire their legs out for the finish to come. Perhaps a video on productive and cohesive pace line habits vs. sneaky underhanded tactics you might play when either sitting in for a teammate who’s behind or when you don’t have the bigger sprint? This one seems like the latter.

He did flick his left elbow just before he pulled off. I would venture to say you needed to watch up a few rider anyhow. Of course he could have telegraphed his intentions more. I see you pull off into the wind, I've been with groups that like to pull off into the draft. I'm sure their is a scientific reasoning that would indicate a faster paceline if you did one or the other. Our rule is don't attack the paceline if the line is conhesive and working well, save the attacks for the last 3km if you have a gap. We also don't like it when someone surges on the front. A fast paceline is a smooth line, the second position from the front should HOLD the pace, and move over when the natural gap of the falling line opens up. If the person on the front wants to lift the pace then do it over a long period of time while on the front, then pull off.

I hear you on folks sitting in, and waiting till the end of the ride to put in a big effort, but I’d like to think there is some empathy in these sorts of rides for people trying to level up, and perhaps that was the only way he could input a big effort for the day - we don’t know, but to me the smile says, maybe I’m not able to contribute (at a high level) throughout the ride like others, but I’d #1 like to have some fun and #2 this is the fullest extent of my contribution, without blowing up before the finish. If I were the strongest, or one of the strongest guys in the group, I wouldn’t give two shits about a last minute attack out of nowhere, and I would want everyone to feel like they can give it something when they feel comfortable to do so. Hilariously recognizable willy-waving, surge-tastic, Accordian City shenanigans aplenty here. People who have been sitting in all day attacking at the end. The guy in blue sending it for ten seconds and then completely blowing up. People who have no business being in the group gapping wheels with no warning. Wild surging as people send it up the sides. I've definitely seen all of this before, it's classic group behavior. We do two attacking drop rides a week in season and all of this is fairly typical. Dropping the wheel halfway down the line will earn you some jeers as will allowing too big a speed differential while falling back.

Diff perspective - but surely there’s too many unknown rules bro! Surely if old mate rolls an 800W turn and blows up he’s done! If you’re good enough, close the gap and keep rolling. Old mate might have had a blast for his 20 mins 😄🤣. On a ride like this (it ain’t a pace line), surely it’s Belgian rules….? Ie. There aren’t any and it’s survive if ya can.

Maybe it's because I am from Germany, but I would feel safer going +250 km/h on the Autobahn than doing a fast pace line on this road. Seems very sketchy with the mix of cars, pedestrian and slower cyclist. Can't imagine road cyclist are making many friends in general there doing +40 in a 30 zone

I'm guessing they are doing at least 50km/h around most of that loop.

Strange video. Seems like a way to busy area to go full blast here? Surely there's some roads with way less pedestrians etc to go fast? Not really a great way to improve the already crappy public image of cyclist not giving a flying **** about other road users. Also; the last guy that attacked the group that was pacelining... Why even bother chasing him as he's not part of your groupride anyway?

So it's alright for you and others to attack off the front and disrupt the rhythm for no reason, forcing others to close pointless gaps, but the second someone else struggles to hold the wheel 'you won't make many friends' - got it!

Man you guys are all over the place. Of course you’re riding through urban environment with as you say “metro furniture” to avoid. We have country roads with much less obstacles. A recent pace line of 7, we’ll each spend about 1/4 to 1/2 mile pulling before dropping back. Each person making an effort to pull equally. It’s really quite the machine.

There is nothing more frustrating than people sitting in a group ride, hiding at the back and never taking a turn, then close to the end when the majority is tired they scoot around and demolish what is left. Suddenly you find that group ride invites fade to those guys.

I think you are just being a little sensitive . I don't really care if someone drops the wheel with no warning, Id just close the gap if I can and if I can't it just means Im too weak. If someone wants to conserve his tank till the final sprint so be it, I either make it work by attacking earlier or have a bigger sprint than him. Its all fun and games. If it was a real race, and you wanted to win then it would be in your best interest to pull as little as possible anyway. All these impromptu fast rides are good practice for that imo

Paceline rides can become aggravating w/o a coach, or team dictating the goal. If it's just a bunch of random dudes, then may as well have a start and finish line and let the guys race it out

If someone who's done their share of the work attacks then you go after them, but if some rando wants to take a flyer, you let them, and you probably laugh as they completely blown up, likely never to be seen again.

It’s laughable that people watching this believe the intent is some sort of cohesive group training ride. The chop is very specifically a place to meet after work and try to survive / grind your fellow attendees into dust.

On our group we have a strong guy who’s always shouting don’t pull too hard. Then on his turn pulls hard to drop the weaker riders. Hypocrites on the pace line totally suck. Then same guy orders you to let dropped people slot back into their original placement of order. So a few idiots pull too hard then we end up slowing down to wait up for people. A lot of total shit shows.
