Looks like someone is not happy with the DIY version. Also the not so appreciative tone may be noticed on this comment. After-all, people can DYI something somewhat similar. Just like the spinning rod or rolling log and then tons of videos of a spinning coffee can trap or spinning mountain dew can traps started to pop up on KZbin. Point is not everyone is the DYI'er type.

I can think of two reasons that the original trap is superior. Firstly, the 'roof' over the feeding area offers a degree of protection from predators while feeding, and secondly, on the replication, the mouse is able to go around the edge and test the safety of the surface. In the original the mouse is directed into the trap before it can test the surface, by which time it is focused on the food.

The simple trap you replicated was wonderfully done Adding a hood does 2 things Focuses the rodent to enter to get bait placed on the inside of the hood and stops bigger rodents from getting the bait eating the trapped mice(rats eat mice)

hey Chris thanks for the video. to make it even more effective consider the funnel on the original trap it's meant to keep them coming from one direction to ensure they don't flip the trap while still on the brim/ edge of the trap with weight not on the flipping part of the trap

It's good to see you again. I bought the parts to make the cyclone vacuum out of 5 gal. Buckets and the water vacuum. I'm going to combine the two, using the water vacuum together to make a hydro filter. That way I can clean rocks and carve wood with my Dremel. Thanks for being the inspiration. One more thing. I'm putting a PVC pipe down to the bottom with a bunch of holes drilled into it. That way the cyclone will catch the larger pieces a the water will trap and filter most of the fine dust.

Thanks much, you did a stupendous job on the production and trap design/construction. We use the official RinneTraps in our barn, house, and our church also has one in the basement. They work well but we've noticed small issues over the months. First, those plastic bucket tabs do break off. And too, for some strange reason, sometimes that flipper sticks and doesn't drop the mouse into the bucket. Occasionally we find a trap cleaned out and that flipper or drop down has resistance and doesn't work smoothly. We're thinking maybe your design is even better. It certainly is more economical.
@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 6 ай бұрын
Whenever you remove the flipper on the RinneTrap to re-bait under the lid, I always make sure to cycle the flipper a bunch of times to make sure it is in the grooves properly and that it is not catching on something to make it jam.
@dalehammond1749
@dalehammond1749 6 ай бұрын
@@chrisnotap Yes, we always do that too. Sometimes a trap sits for a long time such as placed in a closed cabin during the winter. We've observed that plastic against plastic tends to stick when just siting unmoved for a long period of time. Maybe something like your design with a brass rod and brass sleeves arrangement would be better. Anyway, something to think about.

Those darned mice don't care if we run a Cat Cafe!....they just want the cat's food in the supply room where volunteers keep spilling it. I wish I could cut that quickly and accurately. You are truly a master. I have noticed there are a lot of them on YT. The two mice looked kind of similar with the jump, so I went back to review the first to make sure you weren't using any video trickery ANYWHERE in this video. They were different, you passed the test. :-) I certify this video 100% unmodified! Nonsense aside, I don't have any rats or mice in the attic anymore because I got sick to death of them chewing through the fiberglass screens in the soffits and put in chicken wire for the rats and mice backed up with aluminum screen as a bug barrier. Chew through that, you little buggers (or something to that effect), was my final decree at finishing them. They haven't, and unless one of them has steel teeth, I doubt they ever will. I think that, or something pre made up should be a standard code requirement on those vents, something truly rat proof, because with fiberglass screen, eventually they will getting in the house, and that does not a happy camper make. And when they've discovered the ingress, even if you fix that place in the screen, they will just immediately chew a new hole there or elsewhere. Maybe they have, I haven't looked at building codes in a long time. Maybe I'll do that, just out of curiosity. I've seen the plastic vent covers, but I don't know if those are rat proof, or not. Nice take on the trap, BTW. Not surprising. I've seen a few of your things I could think of mods for, but never anything that wasn't well thought out and executed. Nice job keeping this one very simple and effective...again.

A good take on the swivel pole version. Seems more inviting. They sure are curious. One thing I would recommend is to maybe put a hamster cage drinking bottle in there if it isn't checked daily, or forgotten occasionally. One concern I have about multi-mouse live traps is that some mice might fight. I have seen an adult mouse attack a baby mouse that wasn't its own. That said, mice are one of the most placid little rodents (voles are another story!). A personal anecdote: when I lived in Germany, at the age of eleven I, per chance, discovered the hideous accidental mouse traps - storm gullies. German gullies, the type with a cast iron grill cover have suspended arm-deep buckets in them with a solid base and holes half way up to catch debris before the water runs into the drain. They would get emptied occasionally. One day, out of curiosity I peeped inside and saw a mouse. It was as though it called me. It was alive and I could see its predicament. I just about managed to lift the heavy grill and just about managed to reach it and pull it up to freedom. It became a habit to always check the gullies and over the years I pulled out countless mice and the occasional toad. They rarely freaked out. Many would instinctively know that I was helping them. When I worked in a factory in the forest I had refined my method that didn't require lifting of the grill. I had a "mouse elevator" in my handbag - a cardboard loop on string. Again, they would often go in voluntarily. Sometimes I had put in bit of dandelion leaf, or if the mouse had been weakened by a prolonged confinement, I had to lift the lid and transport the critter to the mouse ICU. Not once was I bitten. Often they would just sit in my hand and groom themselves. Oh, and my colleagues called me the mouse angle, well, to my face anyway, lol.

The flipper has two sides: One (A), which folds down when a mouse goes on it, and the other (B), which then automatically swings up. My humble question: Can a mouse jump so hard and so high that it pushes side B up and can thereby escape? Thanks for helpful answers! Greetings from Germany .
@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 28 күн бұрын
One mouse would need to jump up and have its body weight hit the bottom of side "B" to make it pivot and then have another mouse simultaneously jumping up to escape out of the partial opening that the first mouse created. If this happens to happen, the second mouse deserves to have a "get out of jail for free" card!

Peanut butter will not work for all mice. Field mice love bell pepper, tomato, cucumber, carrot, green bean seeds, etc. Do NOT use peanut butter, use sunflower butter. I speak from experience, because we've been learning what exactly the different mice like to eat at certain times of the year.

To replace the 'tent' feature of the original (which increases the suprise to the mouse) you could take a second board and cut and fold it so that it sits on three paperclips (an extra one goes directly opposite the second one in the video). The unfolded shape would be like a heart symbol with the bottom cut off. The top curves would each be the same as inside of the bucket. Fit it by squeezing the two 'halves' together and pop it over the three paperclips to shield the open side. In reality the top of the heart would probably be very shallow - more like the outline of a seagull in flight.

@@chrisnotap First of all, that is a very easy and practical flip top trap. As for Martin's point, actually I'm not picturing what Martin is suggesting, but it is important to have the covering over the flipping part. If you watch enough of Shawn Woods videos, it is not uncommon to see a mouse realize the surface is tipping and leap to the rim before sliding into the bucket. The overhead tent prevents that from happening. Did you try cutting the coroplast material with the oscillating tool hook you made back in the past? The tool works so well on cardboard I would think it would work with corrugated plastic.

Very good trap. Kill traps aren't only unnecessary but are typically far more complex mechanically. Your take on the trap was pretty cool! The only thing as others have said, is that these traps which catch multiple mice in a small space lend themselves to mice killing and sometimes cannibalizing eachother. If left too long. Even with food in the trap. I have often found mice half eaten and still alive, crawling around 2 legged with 4 or 5 other rabid examples in the traditional gated metal traps. Quite gruesome. Think I'll pick one or two of these up anyway but it would be a huge innovation to have a trap that would fill the bucket with 4 or 5 chutes for the mice to go into and a cam that alternates the chute every time the trap is sprung. I would pay good money for that.

If you want to keep them from gathering multiple mice I have an idea. Glue two magnets to the parts where the trapdoor and the lid meet so it only opens once. Or a magnet and a piece of metal like a small bolt. For Chris's version you would do the same and not use the second Paperclip. Though honestly I wouldn't feel bad about the mice fighting each other. That is nature and not your choice. Your actions are still a hundred percent humane.
