I looked online and grizzly makes a similar machine that costs about 800 bucks. It has arms to swing the fretboard on a radius. This design takes up less space, though and probably cost you a lot less. Plus the vacuum grabber is ingenious. Great job!

Proof that the best solutions are usually the simplest. Great job on that tool.

i would like to see a vid on the vacume pump you made out of a refridge comp....please..?

Brilliant! That is one awesome jig!

Probably less then half that and that includes the sander. Someone made one similar to mine but the end plates are mounted from below . The sander sits on the mount. It's a nice variation on the design and could adapt to other designed sanders .

Nice engineering! I take it that in order to change the radius, you just replace the end caps? The vacuum clamping is a great addition. Good work!

I think you missed the point. It's not that I think this way is wrong. It's very cool. It's that there is a lot that went into making a vacuum held system when most DIY radiusing jigs out there use simpler methods. It's all a preference on how your going to use it and Chris even explained in his reply why he built it that way.

FYI. the shop fox also has the graphite insert under the bed.

To me the really cool part is the vacuum chuck. I'm no idiot and used double sided tape / carpet tape on the prototype. With the chuck it is a breeze to reposition the FB and there is no mess to clean off the board or carriage, plus if the board would get too hot there is a chance the glue on the tape might slip.

This is really cool. The thing that seems to be a little overkill is the vacuum seal for the fretboard. Did you ever think think about just attaching it with double stick tape? Or are you make a ton of them?

I love your system!! I think its better than anything else ive seen. Only one question. Does the compressor keep the fretboard from moving altogether? Will it go out of allignment?
@chrispaulick10 жыл бұрын
The vacuum chuck keeps it in place. The stop at the front / nut position also keeps it from moving forward . Thus sanding belt moves from tail end of FB to nut end.
@viktortulbya210710 жыл бұрын
how much would it cost to have you build me that apart from the part that attaches to the sander? i dont have any machining skills.
@chrispaulick8 жыл бұрын
+Viktor Tulbya Perhaps a bit late but there is a KZbin out there where someone used this idea and made a wooden floor stand that does the same thing. It is great to see that someone has run with the idea and came up with another option. That's one reason why I post these videos. People see things that I don't and it's good that they share them with the Community. I get ideas from others gigs as well.

sooo, how do you do bass fretboards?
@chrispaulick8 жыл бұрын
I don't do basses but you would have to use a larger sander or make the end bed plates longer to accommodate you fb length .

not the most knowledgeable on this stuff, actually working towards my first build, looking at tools now. Most of the other jigs I've looked at use some kind of a pivot mechanism to control the angle. With yours, does that fact that you're doing it by hand and occasionally not parallel to the sander cause any error in the radius, or as long as both ends of the guide are down, is it ok regardless?. Have you ever used this to then go to finer and finer san papers to really smooth it out?
@chrispaulick10 жыл бұрын
It is pretty smooth and can be touched up by had and polished up with micro mesh papers . micro mesh sets can be gotten at StewMac. They also work great to polish up your car headlight lenses.

Not much to it. Cut the copper lines, one is in and one is out. put hose on in line. Figure out the power and there you go. Each compressor might be different. Check out the forums for more info. If you saw mine you would laugh, it's pretty crude.
