Can't give any photography advice but I've been self employed in the building game on and off for nearly 40 years. Please get an accountant. Sooner rather than later. They will help set you up, plan and maintain your books. This is vital and will save you a great deal of blundering about at the end of your first year. Talk to them about setting yourself up as a company. Pay yourself no more than a minimum wage and add bonuses when you can afford it. The object being - don't pay tax. Make a loss in you first year by leasing your equipment/car/anything else you can think of to your company and bare in mind that there's a big difference between turn over and profit. Finally, think like a boxer. Just when you're doing your best work someone or something is going to hit you where it hurts. Ignore it. It doesn't matter. Carry on regardless. The prize is worth fighting for. Good luck.

Great sound advice Martin,👍📸

Thanks Martin for this excellent advice. I am in the process of sorting out an accountant. I have a little time as I do not intend on drawing a salary for the first year or buying anymore equipment (on strict instructions from Mrs Sale). That aside I will appoint an accountant very soon. I like the boxer analogy, it felt a bit like that at times last week.

@@ChrisSalePhoto Tell me about it LOL. There's lots of tricks to learn though. £5 a day subsistence allowance for people who work in a different place every day. That adds up over a year. Keep your shopping receipts as of now. Phone, fuel, using you home as a place of work. Loads of things like that. Got to hit the ground running. When you see the man in the suit take a print with you and hang it near the secretary. If she sells one give her a commission.

@jamesparker93125 жыл бұрын
Chris Sale - I just moved to a new state - over 2,500 miles. So am having to find all new clients. It’s a slow start, as I expected. I’ve decided to do real estate photography for one cash flow and even though it’s my least favorite, it’s pulling in the most work. I love automotive photography and have been at it for over 10 years but since moving I’ve struggled to get work in it. I did quite well where I lived previously. I also love landscape photography. And I love teaching. I’m setting up workshops for 2020 and I’m involved in my local professional photography groups. Slow but steady!

Not watched one of your videos for a while Chris because I've recently retired and we're catching up with the DIY on the house and also experienced a family bereavement. So it was a shock to me when I started catching up with your channel to find you have gone professional. It takes a lot of guts to pack your well paid salary in and go to being a full time Landscape Photographer. Even at this stage of your new journey, I can see an improvement in some of your images. I think the reason is now you are able to get out more often and you're catching the best light and conditions. I am a member of a local photographic society in Lancaster and I will have a chat with our Program Secretary to see if we can arrange something with you for a talk. Good luck for the future and I'm looking forward to watching your new journey.

Hi Gary - I am so sorry to hear that you have suffered a bereavement in you family and hope that things are beginning to return to some form of normality for you (if that is even possible). I'd hope my images are improving, a big part of my decision to leave my old job was to give myself more time to work on my photography, 1 day a week just wasn't cutting it any more. I'd be delighted to speak at your photography club so if your program secretary is interested please ask them to get in touch via my website. In the meantime I wish you all the best mate.

Hola Chris. Enjoyed the next chapter in your journey along with the images you shared. Such a stunning place. Not if, but when I get to the UK, I'll be there. Seems there's no shortage of advice regarding your strategies in the comments. The challenge will be how you integrate these well-intentioned bits of advice without drifting too far off from your plan. In any business endeavor, strategies will always need to change based on the external environment. I'm sure when you watch this video a year from now, your strategies might look much different. What I think shouldn't change is your vision. I think you have a solid one so I'd encourage you to keep that in focus and allow it to drive your decisions. Also, I applaud your transparency and willingness to share your efforts with us. Onward!

16.38... a limited edition print right there ! Good luck with the venture Chris., I have watched your 1st couple of vlogs since your announcement but thought I would wait to make comment on to see how things are progressing with your plans. Some great thoughts and the fact that you intend to go forward as a stand alone LANDSCAPE photographer is a very brave decision and I admire your guts to do that . As you was ticking off the things going forward I was thinking of talks to camera clubs as I could see you in this environment and I think this would be a steady little earner for you. If you ever venture this way I know a few clubs who might like to put your on their guest list. Not sure how the patreon thing works but my immediate thought of £10 pm to get a free calendar seemed very steep? Love the idea of working with brands and methinks you need to start touting yourself towards camera equipment brands etc - brand ambassadors seem ten a penny these days but at least it would be a way of getting some chepaer gear (if thats how it works?) to work with. Going back to the talks thing, why don't you get a talk togther and see if you can get an alliance with one of the stands at TPS a little like Julian did, just a thought? Anyway, I could waffle all night with ideas... probably done best over a pint if I visit the lake district :)
@ChrisSalePhoto5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alan, some excellent ideas here well worth thinking about. On the Patreon thing you are absolutely right but for $15 (now that I have done the maths) you get a calendar and a limited edition A3 print. I have tried hard to make it as fair a possible but if you have any other ideas of things that I could offer I am all ears.
@andrewlunn4 жыл бұрын
Good insight Chris. i'd say figure out your most profitable and accessible revenues streams and maximise them and let the others fill in and grow over time. Regarding the Calendar i think a lot of people buy a calendar to help support a photographers journey as an annual gesture, so you may loose a lot of potential sales if you insist that they sign up to Patreon - think about local companies, they may want to order higher volumes as gifts to their customers but not want to sign upto an subscription. Good luck for the year ahead in Photography

Best of luck Chris. I'm looking at using a similar mindset to you at the moment...although not as a landscape photographer. I think magazine writing might be a challenge - it's very much a dwindling market and it's got a load of people already trying to survive in that arena who previously had solid jobs doing the same thing but have had to become multi-taskers. Standing head and shoulders above them may prove tricky, but is anyone can it's you. I think hooking up with higher end B&Bs and hotels to provide half-day "here's what you can do when you're here" workshops.

Love your videos...as an amateur Photographer on the Gold Coast, Australia, I am also looking to become full time and would like to hear more about income streams that you are considering and your thoughts on them.
@ChrisSalePhoto5 жыл бұрын
Hi Wilson, very briefly... - I feel that stock photography is a numbers game, it takes a lot of effort to get up and running these days and you can expect very little in return in the short term. However, if you are willing to put in the time and effort and play the long game there is money to be made if you can get the right images. - I am not sure about digital downloads. I have never given them any thought. I can't think of any circumstances when anyone would want to download one of my images but I might be being a little short sighted. I hope that helps - good luck with going full-time.

Getting the brands involved is a great idea - product/brand placement in your videos is noticeable ;-) I'm involved with a guy now (sorry just re-read and that sounds very wrong!) as retained landscape guru and he runs a VIP facebook group where he shares photography videos, tutorials, 1:1 mentoring and is available for advice & support on tap. Personal recommendations? 1 Guiding. I think you'll get strong responses from experienced photographers, but ones who don't know which location to visit at a particular time. Your local knowledge is key. 2 Brands. Having done a lot of this work in the golf industry I can tell you that brands aimed at the outdoor market will provide income, once again local knowledge is key (golf courses so easy compared to the fells!). Think outside the box too, caravans/stoves/weather vanes/compasses... You know better than I..!

Dear Chris, that was a really inspirational exciting video, I think like all the people have watched this I really admire your bravery in doing what many photographers would love to do but haven't got the nerve to. The photography in the past three videos has simply got stronger and stronger which shows how practice and also your chance now to choose weekdays to go out (which as you rightly said are invariably better than weekends!) has given you some excellent images. I love the photograph from Loughrigg Brow and painted a panorama from that that viewpoint for an exhibition in Keswick recently. The cloud inversion over Ullswater was fantastic. Were you perhaps there same morning as me on Friday last week? Good luck and I hope you have lots of success with your new career!

Re selling prints: you yourself noted that most serious photographers don't buy other people's prints. Social media and KZbin are going to draw colleagues, but not buyers (except maybe calendars). You want to target non-photographers who lives be the Lake District and would like unique mementoes of the area on their wall. That, to me, means art enthusiasts, either local or tourists. How about working with one of the many art galleries in the area that display and sell local artists' paintings and photos? Yes, they take a commission. But consider yourself as a professional artist and market yourself accordingly. Check art magazines that review Lake District artists and you'll get an idea of which galleries may have an interest in showing your work, and which ones sell prints for good prices. Get known in the general art community and make connections. At some point a gallery may offer you, or accept your proposal, for inclusion in a limited group exhibition or even a solo show. Who knows, after that?
@ChrisSalePhoto5 жыл бұрын
There is some excellent advice there John. I will not be targeting other photographers for my print sales, did you see my video on social media. In it I discussed how I was going to target non-photographers with a love of the Lake District. I have already started researching magazines, particularly with a Lake District connection. Lots of opportunities there. I have to be honest I am very wary of galleries. I have not had the best experience dealing with them. Maybe one day I will set up my own. How about that!?

I am enjoying this series, and seeing how this pans out - you have some good ideas Chris, and its good to see you thinking broadly about how to maximise your income. If you want to expand your repertoire pass over the M6 from Shap and seek out some opportunities in the Howgills - even Wainwright went there and wrote books, so why not have a week over the motorway beyond Tebay?
@ChrisSalePhoto5 жыл бұрын
I have definitely considered it Dave. I think there is a limited market for images from the Howgills (compared with the Lake District) but if I can find somewhere like a gallery or even a coffee shop I would definitely be up for it.

@@ChrisSalePhoto If you hooked a decent one in to your calendar, or even as a limited print - it brings some attention to this lesser known area. Yes I accept it may have a smaller audience, but also your wider audience might think - oh its only just over the motorway, perhaps we should pop over and see what the fuss is about.

Superb video Chris, and really interesting to follow your professional journey. Don't discount the value that camera clubs can bring to you. Pull some talks together and get them out there by directly contacting local clubs. Also find out whether there is a regional camera club federation in your area too, and see if they publish a list of lecturers. Camera Club competition judging is also a good way to get a foot in the door of clubs. I know that club photography sometimes has a bad name for itself, but I've found camera clubs to be a good source for workshop participants. I myself offer camera club days out (for a fee of course), as well as 121s and group events. The camera club days are also a good source for additional participants. In my opinion be wary of galleries - they can be a great advert for your work but are often very expensive to exhibit in and then there is the cost of the printing, framing, greetings cards, and advertising to be added in as well. I've done a few, and very often come home with a lot of the framed prints which I then have to store. Some areas do open studio weeks which are worth doing if you have a lot of stock to shift, but price based on what people are likely to have in their pockets. Wish you all the best sir, and looking forward to hearing more about your journey.

Excellent advice Huw after all, I do love the sound of my own voice! :) I will start approaching clubs in the local area soon with a talk about my journey as a photographer and the impact that KZbin has had on my photography. I've been doing motorsport photography at an amateur level for over a year now. I would love to do it as a profession on the weekends at races. But being able to acquire a media license and then network with race teams is quite a challenge. It's good in a way that there is a very defined market but trying to access it is the biggest challenge. I'd love to do a motorsport calendar but I've no idea if I need permission and from who. Landscape you can do your own thing so make the best of it.

£10 a month is a bit strong for a first level on patreon. Just as an example most start with just a couple of pounds and then as the levels go up so too do the bonuses. £120 a year and you give away a calander is a tad harsh. Thats just my opinion though to some it may be a great deal. Think of it this way, you have 8k+ subscribers. If say 2000 of those give £1 a month thats £2000 a month income. My point is you sometimes are best asking for very little to make a lot :)

Thanks Ross - regarding Patreon as I said you get a calendar and a limited edition (A3) print. I might not have made that clear enough as you are not the first to have mention it. @@ChrisSalePhoto Ross has a valid point, and perhaps - you have a lower entry point Patreon that doesnt come with a bonus of the calendar and a print. Other youtubers have tiered Patreon payment options, and give different benefits dependent on the tier paid. So you could go: Bronze - £1 Silver -£5 Gold - £10 Bronze get a Chris Sale keyring (you can get these made cheaply, I just did a run of 400 at around £1.5 each, good quality) - so not a bank killer. Silver - could get a unique Silver only print, of an image that doesnt make the main gallery. Gold - well they get the calendar, and the superior A3 print. My Advice would be don't rush to set it up, unless you are sure what you are a pitching for. Ross's idea has mileage, and with a sprinkling of creativity, perhaps you could find a unique strategic angle on getting this bit correct. Sorry Ross (I tried adding you to the discussion and it just won't have it).

Also I think it would be a mistake not to use KZbin to promote your business, it's the second biggest search engine after Google. There were a few of things I think you should also consider in your career as a Landscape Photographer - Video tutorials on your channel (this could help bring in more subscribers to your channel), books (there are a number of online sites you can use to make your own books with the bonus being they are virtual books until ordered by your customer's), licencing your images - 500px is part of Getty Images so with the right key works you could get some income from that as well, video footage - if you don't have one already then I would advise getting a drone (4k video) & a camera that records 4K video ( a Fujifilm X-T3 would be a good fit - cheap & very good specs for the money ).
