@elevenseven-yq4vuКүн бұрын
3 out of 3 movies Eggers has made before are nothing short of masterpieces. This one is his first remake of sorts. I hope it's not a sell-out. After "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" both being stellar in their own special way of combining period piece, psychological thriller and mythological horror, I became apprehensive when a trailer for "The Northman" made it look like he had taken on a mercenary project jumping on the mainstream bandwagon of the recent viking hype. Only to find out that my pessimism was unfounded when this third weird, precious, excentric piece of eggerism hit the cinema and turned out to be yet another raw yet intelligent work of visual narrative art with an indie vibe but a bigger budget. I can hardly wait to see "Nosferatu" at the theatre.

Were Eggers' other movies all original? Because that would make this his first adapted project as Nosferatu is technically a version Dracula.
@elevenseven-yq4vuКүн бұрын
His movies hitherto were all original scripts, but the basic events were not entirely new: The VVitch draws from New England witch trials; The Lighthouse draws from historical events involving the death of a lighthouse keeper under unclear circumstances; and The Northman draws from elements of Hamlet. Yet, all stories, as they play out, are original ones, be it the characters, the plot, or how their main themes interlock. The common approach to all three films, although these widely differ from each other in visual style, is Eggers' unique amalgamation of costume drama, character study, psychological thriller, existential dread and mythological horror, where all of these elements inform each other and are pretty consistently displaying a zeitgeist and mindset where the borders between subjective reality, subconscious symbolism, religious superstition, individual madness and/or supernatural interference shift or blur. "Uncanny" is the adjective that comes to mind most starkly in Robert Eggers' cinematic universe.

@elevenseven-yq4vuКүн бұрын
I haven't seen Eggers' version of Nosferatu yet; but the writer/director's other films so far, The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Norseman, had a specialty going for them that I have rarely, if ever, seen anywhere else: An eerie, atmospheric, dense narration that works on multiple levels at once, in an elegantly crafted manner; namely, as a well-researched period piece when it comes to production design, costumes, characters, mentality, patterns of speech, but also as a psychologically consistent character study, as a psychological thriller with believable conflicts and character dynamics, and at the same time as an uncanny piece of subtle (or not so subtle) horror involving beliefs in the supernatural which draw heavily from the mythology and zeitgeist of the period portrayed. If all of that comes together beautifully, I don't need to be scared shitless; it's enough for me to imbue myself in the worldbuilding, take a deep dive into the characters and their external and internal struggle to survive in and make sense of a seemingly hostile and cursed world, to enjoy myself revelling in the melodramatic spookyness, and in the myths of a bygone era. Hopefully, Nosferatu will offer me something more in that vein... On another note: Have you and your daughter ever watched the remake of Nosferatu by Werner Herzog? That one is scary as well! But Murnau's original is still my favourite.

How come you've never reviewed The Northman Chris?
@MrRicardowill14 сағат бұрын
❤Ricardo Authenticity Rating loves this movie review. Chris Stuckmann is a modern day Egbert and Roeper if he was a duo, but his attention to details makes him stand out from other reviewers and he does it in under 10 minutes makes it even better. My only critique is he doesn’t give a rating from 1 to 5 or even from 1 to 10. Hence the reason my rating for this podcast is 9 out of 10. Worth sharing on 5 Star Movie Reviews. ❤

Um . . .of course he is giving it a good review. That is all that Stuckmann does these days. He refused to put out negative reviews, so if it's on his channel you know that he likes it.

If Nosferatu wasn't flickering the lights on and off, then I'll pass on seeing this in theaters. 😅
