This movie falls into one of my favorite sub-genres, which is "guy finds a tiny thread and pulls on it until he realizes he's in way over his head and sees something he never should have seen". Blue Velvet and Videodrome are also in that sub-genre

I’m not sure if you’re referring to it: but musica ricercata II by Lygeti is used in the movie and the musician composed it imagining how it would sound to repeatedly stab Stalin.Basically every note played is a stab. I can’t imagine how it must have felt to live in the USSR at that time…

That is in the novella and Kubrick said he thought that the ending was weak. Nothing is fine again in the movie. The impossible window lady from Room 237 said on her blog, we don't see Helena in the last few minutes of the movie. Kubrick keeps the camera up, so we couldn't see her, if she was there. But Alice uses the eff word, which she wouldn't say if she thought Helena was near enough to hear. We don't get to see Bill's reaction to this word, either, a strange ending for superstar Cruise.

The reason it is "oddly comforting" is it's Kubrick, in a semi modern era (for its time), in a recognizable city, dealing with some fairly relatable themes starring two hugely recognizable actors and it's at a nice relaxing pace. It's comforting that Kubrick did manage to make one final movie in a world we still recognize and one final fairly accessible movie. We miss him and we miss this late 90s pace of life.

When Nicole asks Tom what time it is, it does look like the lighting outside is around 6am or so. But I suspect the reason why he told her "A little after 4am" is perhaps he was trying to hide the actual time arrived back home. After all, he would have a lot to explain for by getting home at 6 or 7 in the morning.

Saw the notification for this review earlier tonight, and it finally gave me the push to watch Eyes Wide Shut. Just finished the movie, and now I’m back to say: you were spot on. For a film that’s so somber, I found it oddly comforting, and it’s weird in the best way possible. I’ve been watching your content for over a decade now, and your recommendations have shaped my taste in movies in ways I never imagined. It’s crazy how much of what you pointed out in this review matched my own thoughts while watching. I do have some questions, but part of me feels like the ambiguity is the point, ike Nicole Kidman’s character suggesting it might all be a dream. It’s 5 AM here, and I was half-asleep while watching it, so when you mentioned the movie works best in that hazy/dream state, I couldn’t help but laugh. Guess I know your take style a little too well. LMAO. Kubrick’s absence is a real loss for Hollywood, and seeing Cruise in a role like this makes me wish he’d explore more complex, layered characters. Thanks for the review. Loved the movie and loved hearing your thoughts on it!

7:25 "helping their daughter with some math homework" is one way to put it, but really there's a lot of subtext repetition going on. What the mom does, in the homework example, is teaching her daughter how to figure out which boy has more money. Likewise, it's her at the beginning of the movie who knows where the protagonists wallet is located (next to the bed). Stuff like that.

What a load of garbage and a gross betrayal of Kubrick and his legacy. This nonsense has been put about by fools who think they are, you know, SO perspicacious and they have got special insights into Kubrick's mind. More insight into his mind than his wife, his brother in law (who also acted as his producer) long time assistant Leon Vitali (he played Lord Bullingdon in Barry Lyndon, but worked with Kubrick instead of pursuing an acting career), and co-scriptwriter Frederick Raphael all of whom scotched the crazy rumours? I would strongly advise you to look in detail at how this film came about. It is based on an Austrian novella, "Dream Story" by Arthur Schnitzler written in the 1920s. Kubrick had wanted to make this for decades, meanwhile an inferior film version had been made as well as a weak TV version. All versions, including Kubrick's, stay incredibly close to the book right to the end, although Kubrick updated it and moved it from Vienna to New York. Even a superficial viewing of the film leads to the most likely conclusion that Kubrick was fascinated by the Freudian aspects of the tale. Schnitzler, after all had been in correspondence with Sigmund Freud. So close does Kubrick keep to the book (yes, the orgy scene from the 1920s is there, and the pubescent daughter in the costumier's shop etc), that even a tiny incident like Bill (Fridolin in the book) being barged into by a gang of young men so that he stumbles and almost falls, is there in book and film. The book ends with the couple waking in the morning (probably after making love) listening to the sound of their daughter's laughter from her room next door. Why would Kubrick go out of his way to mess up the whole premise of a novel of which he was obviously enamoured. Just to fuel ridiculous conspiracy theories?
@henryivan6858
@henryivan6858 Ай бұрын
@@tonybennett4159 Kubrick exploited the visual story telling aspect of cinema. He learned with Lolita (a movie about a p*do) to suggest visually what the censors didn't allow him. It is 100% Kubrick to leave visual ideas to ask questions and it goes in line with his quotes when talking about filmmaking and ideas. Kubrick tutored the screenwriter of EWS. Even the writer admitted that he didn't know if Kubrick was going to use his screenplay for his own purposes. Kubrick also reworked and personally changed the screenplay delivered to him, to make it more visual, he changed the format. For example, the original screenplay, the end happens in the living room, with their daughter opening the door and joining them, after they ended a version of their dialogue of the finished film. Kubrick changed most of it for the shooting. Including more dialogue, the location from the living room to the Toy Store, and the daughter leaving, instead of entering the room to join them. The screenplay is online and the author's book about writing Eyes Wide Shut is available to buy.

If you read the Schnitzler book Eyes Wide Shut is based on "Traumnovelle" you get a clearer idea of what this movie's doing. It's pure Frued. Arthur Schnitzler was a doctor, playwright and admirer of Sigmund Frued's work during the early 20th century when Psychoanalysis was all the rage in academic circles. Sex & death themes, mask symbology, dream logic, etc. Kubrick does a very clever job conveying all of this essentially without the main character's inner monologue. I believe they originally considered Tom Cruise to do a narration, but I'm glad Kubrick decided not to do that because the movie is more ambiguous and mysterious as a result. Ultimately more re-watchable. Kubrick updates the book from 1920s Vienna to 90s NYC. Bill's attempts to get laid are always cut short or interrupted, mirroring his wife's fantasized dilemma of her missed opportunity to have sex with the navy officer. It's as if Bill's living Alice's dilemma unconsciously, on a loop (Kubrick makes this feel a bit like that one bad dream where you're frustrated to complete something but can't.) The main female protagonists Bill encounters on his outings are red-haired analogues of Alice. This is where the subtext and symbology of the story gets really interesting, in my opinion. Everything you need to know about Bill's arc, including what he thinks and feels toward Alice, is mirrored by each of the situations with these different women. Particularly Mandy, aka the masked woman at the orgy and who Bill saves from OD-ing at the Christmas party. And later, when Alice wakes from her nightmare which eerily mirrors his experience at the mansion; its clear Bill thinks he's lost Alice completely. At least, in his mind. The people at the orgy are all having having sex with masks. This is a metaphor of Bill's relationship with Alice. He wears a 'mask' in the sense that he's not revealing his true inner-self in the relationship. I think the murder mystery and the sex cult is there to send Bill, and we the audience, back to 'waking.' He gets wound up in the riddle trying to figure it out, but the purpose of this part of the narrative isn't that it needs to be solved, it's simply there to scare the crap out of Bill and send him back to Alice. When he finally does so, he tells her what he's been up to and why he was so hurt by her confession. So the 'detective story' is fun but also a distraction. However I like that we get a clue about Mandy's death. That she may have been sacrificed for real which is equally depressing and poignant. The story is about Bill and Alice's openess with each other. We're left feeling optimistic for them and their daughter at the end, with a reminder that most of the fears and anxieties occuping our imaginations aren't always, if ever, the actual truth. It's Kubrick's one and only happy ending. And one helluva Christmas movie.

BTW, Freud reduced his frequency of interaction with Schnitzler because he was afraid Schnitzler was influencing him too much, and that he might become secondary to him in a way. I just recently watched "The Firm" and realized how similar it is to "Eyes Wide Shut". Both star Tom Cruise dealing with secretive, corrupt groups while his marriage is falling apart. What’s wild is that Sydney Pollack directed "The Firm" and then played a shady character in "Eyes Wide Shut". It’s like these movies are two sides of the same coin, one rooted in legal realism, the other in dreamlike surrealism, both exposing the cracks in institutions and relationships when faced with hidden corruption.

Perfect Christmas movie!! LOL. Stanley was a clever man, and very brave. This movie is about many things, but for me primarily about how the world is run. Watch the teddy bear (also symbolic) in the last scene very closely. And NO these details do not serve the story as Chris stated. They are deliberately hidden, because he knew whose toes he was gonna step on. Also the lighting is impeccable in this picture, and symbolic as well, lots of analysis done on that alone.

The 4am lighting shot is due to a full moon that is never shown. Konex at the end is a detail that I never noticed. I think it's metaphorical. Connects the dots, pixels light , the grainy look and Christmas lights strewn throughout the film. I love this film. It grows on me with each repeat viewing.

@@Kieselsteinkind The only thing close to change is when Kubrick presented the rough cut 4 days before he died, the MPAA kept giving the movie an NC-17 rating so Warner Bros tried to change it by adding CGI fabric to censor the nude body parts instead of just releasing it unrated. It was so tasteless and even a bit ridiculous, Roger Ebert even compared it to the nudity blocking jokes from Austin Powers and yeah that’s exactly what it was like. Thankfully, that version is mostly unavailable on Blu-Ray as long as you buy one that only includes the 2 hour 39 minute long unrated version.

Your review of this movie is wonderfully put. I have just watched this movie last night and finished it at 2:30 AM approx as soon as the end credits rolled. Throughout the time I am having a psychological warfare while watching it as Bill was having it during his two night of escapades, complete with the haunting score you've mentioned it. The last 10 minutes of the movie is where I was in a half- asleep half- awake mode. This is, by far, the most psychologically unhinged movie Kubrick had ever made (ofcourse most of his movies are unhinged like the Shining and Dr Strangelove; I have yet to finish watching his filmography)

Thanks for a terrific review and dissertation on EWS. It’s always resonated with me and one that I will always rewatch. For me, it’s one of my favorite Kubrick movies, personally and easily in the 4th spot. I moved to nyc 98, just after turning 30, and this hit hard as a mythic take, & tragic introspective romance. It remains for me memorable Christmas tale that I love that I’m always ready but reticent to watch. There is for some reason this air of taboo about this movie that never makes sense.

I remember watching this movie about two years ago. It was on netflix, and I was fresh off watching Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket (not on the same day, minf you), then I saw this movie on the feed, got curious, and watched it. It had me thinking "something wrong is going to happen" after Tom's character went to THAT place. As you said, it had a creepy vibe to it, like something bad was going to happen to him and his wife, Nicole's character. Also, if you played Conker's Bad Fur Day, there are a couple of references to Kubrick's films, with one of them being Eyes Wide Shut. Also also, I've been watching an anime series, and got me thinking that it may have been inspired in part by this film. Anyway, thanks for making this video, and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you 👍🏼

Definitely my favorite Kubrick film, and I also agree that it is also one of the most strangely comforting/relaxing/cozy movies in spite of the dark subject matter. You can watch this movie as a student of film who wants to analyze all the symbolism and deeper meanings, but it also works on a much simpler level where you can just casually put it on to put you in a relaxed state of mind as you follow Tom Cruise through the streets on a cold winter’s night. Also I would like to point out that while Tom Cruise is famous for running in most of his movies, by contrast this is the Tom Cruise movie where he has the most epic slow-paced walking of all time throughout the whole film haha. And good point bringing up Vanilla Sky, Chris. That is another highly underrated film, which I consider to be a thematic sibling film of Eyes Wide Shut.

I don't blame you for finding this movie fascinating because it's different from most, it's thought-provoking, and it could be an exploration of fantasies that people have. (I'd say it's a bit of a stretch for this to be considered a Christmas movie. It just happens to take place around Christmas, which is why the main couple is seen attending a Christmas party, the daughter asks if she can watch a Christmas movie, and the couple is seen Christmas shopping with their daughter.) Yes, Eyes Wide Shut feels deeply nostalgic. The discontent this couple is suffering through juxtaposed to the cheery, Christmas backdrop is haunting. I think many people can relate to having to struggle through demons while smiling through the holiday season. But it’s not all bleak because the movie offers an escape, a world of fantasy and daydreaming that real adulthood almost always lacks. I think it’s nostalgic because it reminds us of a time somewhere between adolescence and adulthood where an escape was still possible.
