More progress on the not-so-cheap cobra! Found a SCREAMING deal on a fully built Teksid motor for the cobra locally, so I scooped that up and started putting it together to work in the 03-04 cobra chassis. Plus, we paint some parts and get ready to get the motor back in the car. Lots more to come!

Huge shoutout to LMR. You can order the parts you saw here:

You ain't kidding. Doing everything himself and just knowing little things like the threading on the spark plugs, what bolts up on the block and what don't on a different block. I always thought it was just aluminum or a cast iron block, never knew there was a completely lighter and stronger different material block made. That man is pretty dam smart

The 4.6L DOHC block is a 6 bolt main. It’s a killer block. 4 on each main cap and 1 on the side of the block into the main. Definitely an under appreciated engine. I miss my 03 Mach 1. I look forward to watch your build. Keep up the good work.

Love your videos man! I'm still trying to come to grips that 03/04 Cobras are 20 years old now.....Seems just unreal to me how fast those years flew. I remember hearing all the rumors about these late '01-early '02 and then seeing them come out and how well they responded to pulley swaps, tunes, exhaust etc.
@midnight347
@midnight347 11 ай бұрын
The reason they were so legendary is because of their potential. What they did stock was also impressive for that time especially at their price range but their legendary status isn't because of that its the potential they had. They kept breaking rods in testing so they were forced to throw in manly h beam rods factory which costed them alot more because factory rod tech wasn't good then they hadn't figured out how to make them strong yet cheaper yet like they did with the 07 up gt500 and coyotes later on. They were powder forged and can still take some good power but not as much as the h beam obviously they're actually forged. So because of the engine being so overbuilt you can just throw whatever at it like modern cars but it's 20 years old. People are spoiled now you can just buy a base gt and make alot this wasn't the case in 2003. These things were so far ahead of their time. I was 19 when they first dropped summer 02 never forget it

Also Chris, while you're at it, one of the 'must do' things with these cars is replace the passenger side secondary tensioner. It is an incorrect design from SVT. Cobra Engineering makes the correct one out of billet aluminum. Ask James about it. A very worthy upgrade in probably everyone's opinion who rebuilds the engine in these cars.

Nice work Chris. Cobra guy here and been here since the beginning. Your content is awesome. One thing that I wanted to add since I’ve been down the cobra rebuild route is make sure to pull apart your oil cooler and flush out the inner cartridge multiple times with cleaner then multiple times with hot oil. I would hate to see you run sparkles into that perty new engine. Keep rolling bud, good stuff.
@johndunsmuir5623
@johndunsmuir5623 11 ай бұрын
The oil cooler had me worried too. A few years back Sean Hyland made a CD, "How to rebuild the Ford 4.6 Engine". In the section on Inspection at the 3:00min mark, he recommends replacing the oil cooler and suggests that it is not rebuildable. If it were my car I wouldn't risk it. I look forward to Chris's videos, especially the Terminator ones, they are exceptionally well done.

Came across your video at just the right time. Building the engine in my 2005 Aviator. Vapor blasted all the aluminum parts. Powder coated blue the valve and timing covers. Almost the same shade of blue as yours. Replacing all timing components, new valves, lash adjusters, roller followers and Comp cams stage one cams. $$$ Sourcing parts from MMR, Rock Auto, Summit Racing and Jegs. Thanks for showing some part numbers for additional parts I am currently ordering. Love these engines but they are very expensive to build.

The b heads flow better and are better for boost when worked. They just needs the head cooling upgrade and you're solid. Stick vac stick is a different story, but who runs stock stuff these days. The 98 cobra or b-head cams are an upgrade. A lot of 03-04 cobra guys have the 96-98 cobra motors misunderstood. I remember a little less than a decade I thought my 600hp 98 cobra was fast, a few years go by and everyone has 1000hp+ now, so now I'm in the midst of making @ 900-1000 on an 80mm with an all forged aluminum (b-head) teksid. Thanks for the vid 👍🏾

Really good stuff enjoying the vids. Would suggest doing head studs. That way when you get a bigger blower (you're going to as they are magic on built motors) you don't have to go pulling the car apart to do the studs. Skip the 8740 and just go straight to 2000's. Also, on the extra timing cover bolt hole for the Teksid, if you flip around the Cobra Engineering drill fixture, it will perfectly line up one of the holes where you need to drill into the block. You only need about 10-12mm of depth. 15mm or more and you risk puncturing through to the water jackets. Then just cut/shorten one of the timing cover bolts and plug the old hole with a set screw and sealant. That's the right way to do it. Also make sure to upgrade the oil pump gears to billet.

Love watching the build process! If you don't know already, don't forget to keep those 98 Cobra cams. The 98 cams are better than the 03/04 Terminator cams. They have better lift and duration. So they are more desired. Also don't forget to get the Cobra engineering head cooling mod. Even though the DB heads have better cooling. They are still subject to the same issue as the earlier heads. Well worth the hundred dollars. Especially since the motor is out and everything is easily accessible.

Hell yeah dude I'm all in on this build. Not only because I love my Fords but because I'm 43 and always wanted that year and color Mustang. Sonic blue metallic is just suck a sweet color. I had a 98 cobra in black with the gold racing stripes and a mild build. KB supercharger and a built rear and upgraded clutch with some other odds and ends. I was 20 when I did it so don't quote me but I believe it was about 615 to the wheels. Such a fun car. But I have a 03 f250 6.8 v10 in sonic blue lol.

Great channel, glad I found it. I just subscribe a few weeks ago. Just for future reference. As far as the cylinder heads are concerned. Cobras from 96-98 Cobras came with the B heads. 99-01 Cobras came with the C heads and 03-04 Cobras and Mach 1 came with the newer D heads which flow a little bit better than the C heads (more torque) . My 99 Cobra sat for 9 years because of a spun bearing at 158k miles. Finally found a used 99 Cobra engine with 110k miles and installed it in the car. Nice to be driving it again. But now the 320hp engine isn't enough in todays world. I'm debating weather to supercharge an engine with that many miles on it.

For decreasing, Totally Awesome Cleaner (Dollar Tree and many others). It actually works better than Gunk. I was blown away that it's super cheap but works. @@ChrisSullivan69 yeah man. You see 1320s cobra raffle? That was my old terminator I sold to Kyle. I put alot of work into it. I have three others including a sonic blue that's fully built with 9 threads too. That mystichrome was alot of blood sweat and tears. Fun to see it get so much attention though. I'm going to text Kyle your video.

Great choice for these front heavy cars.TEKSID is a dependable,durable block.The former stick shift world record holder,Yandro’s ‘96 Minion,used this block for 1500rwh.His builder did my ‘04,but we opted for the FR500 4.6 block which has the Terminator’s six bolt mains.Supposedly a stronger alloy.With the engine,front tubular K and coil over kit,and battery relocate,I lost 250#off the front.My car cornered like a beast and lifted for better weight transfer.Can’t wait for the performance follow-ups on this build.

Look forward to these videos weekly! Music on point per usual, videos keep getting better and better. Hoping those headers get a fresh ceramic coating (grey) that they deserve to go with the sonic blue valve covers.

Awesome job as always Chris- that was a total steal for the block and heads! Just my pistons/rods/rings were like 2300 from MMR a couple of years ago 😅 I also agree about the billet oil pump gears as others have mentioned

Working your magic again I see. Love the content bro as you know how to process all the details into an elaborate build to this "Cheap" Cobra. This thing is going to be an absolute Beast when it's all done. Still scratching my head as to why those heads are torqued that way.

@@ChrisSullivan69 You going to clean up the supercharger the same way for some paint? I think it'd look pretty sick to get that to match in the blue and silver of the engine bay. Another car to add to the great builds you've had roll through your garage. It really shows everyone what someone with some skill, patients, and an insane amount of ingenuity can do on their own.

Iron block is stronger than a Teksid FYI. But the 68lbs savings is nice and it's still plenty strong for probably 90% or better of set ups. There's no denying the new edges are pigs, anywhere you can afford to shave weight with no compromise, you do it! 😂
