I thought I have submitted to my husband as Christ called me to, but Lisa has shown me that there is more to it. I must do it THROUGH Christ, not because CHRIST TELLS ME TO. Thanks for this message! I've always struggled w/ the idea of submission (was raised to be a strong independent woman), esp since society associates submission w/ negative connotations. However, it's good to see that submission does not equal enslavement. Through supporting our men's leadership (and thru their commitment and service to us), it can bring out our full potential to do God's work in this world. It's nice to see such a great example of a Christ-centered relationship in you two.

Tregnier52 being a strong independent woman is always an aspect of christianity... you need to find yourself first before you find yourself a man... a happiness and contentness in Christ first before a marriage or after one is what every human being, man or woman, should strive for... submission to others come when self is not first, a place where you don't worry about self and your self is given to the Lord to take care of, so you can focus on others and God... in other words you cant love and value one another as yourself if you don't love and value yourself... independence aspect should be I'm strong and content without the need of another person AS LONG AS I'm in Christ, then submission becomes a choice not a standard of measuring your worth.... but many people especially women don't understand this, and they become extremists of a sense, they either completely surrender to a dictatorship like relationship with a husband, or they fight for thw power to govern that was not initially given to her as per the intent of God on marriage

I am sooo glad at 3:00 am this day I stumbled upon Francis Chan & his wife's talk in Christ-Centered Relationships Part One. I have been sooo blown away because both of them people have got the message soooo into their hearts. When I was in College I can remember listening to classes talking about how St. Paul hated women and marriage. They had whole classes about his hatred of women; along with the other disciples. And this was a catholic based college. I hooked on CHAN!!!!!

I think the whole point is to NOT get hooked on any man or woman but instead on Jesus Christ. Although Francis Chan has a great message he is human with weaknesses and can never be the answer to all your needs. God bless.

I hope Brother Francis won't mind me using this venue... I talked with President Trump about this perhaps now a week ago. I didn't want him caught unaware or embarrassed in any way. Having watched Leadership in many venues and allowed to sit close with care, I began to observe the "trickle down effect" and how FAR REACHING...if the leader was healthy and wise...the ones under him were as well, whether a company, corporation or family. This is just so amazing and so hard. I find it so hard, SO hard to be submissive. While watching this video, GOD made me realize, if I'm not submissive to a husband, I won't be submissive to Him. This is such a hard message to swallow, but it's the message of JESUS and no matter how hard the message seems, He will take His children through it and help us all to obey. He wants us, we were chosen, and if this is what we want, He'll help us receive it.

There is great Damage Control needed...i.e. an EMERGENCY because of failure of the CHURCH in time of need. Meditating this morning on Isaiah 58, 59, 60, 61, 62. Ephesians 4, Book of James...i.e.the CHURCH has an opportunity to set aside differences of Opinion and Line Up with the WORD of GOD...yes its "in there"...oh. and it's in more places than the above.

I don't agree with you completely Megan. My wife is nothing like this to me. But I still find encouragement to be Christ to her. I do constant actions of love. Hand made gifts to words. Nothing comes of it but I do it because I love her. It has been a revelation to me of what God does and did for me. We try to make mutual agreements but it comes easier when she is of a gentle heart about things. I except her side more and move forward with what we agreed. Most of the time its what She Wanted.

Let's no forget the bible says to submit unto one another!!!! Yes the husband is the head, but 2 become 1 flesh and marriage needs to be a 2 ppl coming together as one and working TOGETHER! Yes wives submit to ur husbands and husband's submit to ur wives and ultimately follow your husband as he follows Christ, but submission does not mean the woman has no voice or part in decision making. This word spoke more to me about how much more I need to be doing toward my wife. If my wife submits anything in my hands I feel almost overwhelmed not to mess it up for her trust in me. Its a heavy burden. We have our parts to play and it is reaffirming to a me as a man if she ever shows anything that resembles submission of trust. Ask do you Trust no matter the price?

Unless something is an outright sin it is sinful not to respect and submit. 1 Peter 3 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. If your husband is not submitting himself in the same way to God then he is sinning. Do not sin because your husband is sinning or being difficult. instead be an example of submission and respect.

Genuine question. The Santa Claus decoration story is a lovely example of thoughtful submission. I'm not married and still learning so if anyone who is married could offer their thoughts- what if the husband had brought home the Santa decoration and the wife was the one who thoughtfully didn't want the Santa as a home focal point?? If the husband listened to that thought and returned the Santa himself, would that be an instance of the wife overstepping her.role and taking undue leadership? Or could that be an issue that either party could appropriately bring up and discuss? Or should the wife deal with feeling uncomfortable able the Santa because her husband thought it'd be an appropriate decoration and he's ultimately in charge of the house? Thanks, and God bless!

I am not married, but I just wanted to clarify the thought Lisa shared in this video. As she mentioned, the submission of wives does not mean to say "yes, sir" to everything without a say. It is rather a "here is how I think on this matter, but I will follow your decision, even if it does not coincide with my thoughts". She's not telling you to not have any say in the household, is what I'm trying to say. If the husband hears the say of the wife laid out in front of him and "he decides" to return the Santa himself, that is the influence that the wife is having upon her husband as his "helpmate".

If a wife were ever to be so submissive to her husband, how much more should a husband submit to God in all things and serve there wives? Husbands submit to God, Wives submit to husbands like Christ and Children submit to there parents. Submission is a learned trait. Most children have to see it first. If my kids are rebellious, Why? Servants heart/submissive heart must be taught by example.

I love the series and love the Chans, but your comment makes me question... verbatim like in original Greek? All the English translations are somewhat interpretation of the translators... so Bible verbatim will be.. just in original Greek which we do not really have anymore. or I guess refer to the oldest manuscript we have.

The word submit is not found in Greek or Hebrew It's an English only word, the word is adapt - wives adapt to your husbands ways, this should free you guys up a bit as all anyone needs to do is go look up stuff for yourself - men need to get direction from God for their family's and not be so insecure that they feel they need to control you to get what they want

I was curious where you got the information about a better translation being "adapt" instead of "submit." The greek word hupotasso is the word that is used in Eph 5:22. Strong's Lexicon defines hupotasso as, "to subordinate; reflexively to obey: - be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto." Thayer Defines hupotasso as, "1) to arrange under, to subordinate 2) to subject, put in subjection 3) to subject one’s self, obey 4) to submit to one’s control 5) to yield to one’s admonition or advice 6) to obey, be subject." Are you getting the definition from somewhere else than either of these 2 lexicons? If you could point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful. Thanks again...God Bless Sister.

I studied in Athens Greece for over 5 years. Submission does not mean "to obey." The Greek word for "obey/obedience" is hupakoe, which means to listen to or to harken to. Submission (hupotasso) means to get under and lift up, or to put in order. It does not mean obedience. Gundry well defines this equalizing principle as a sort of voluntary raising everyone else to your own personal level of importance and worthiness.(2) It is interesting to note that other languages further reinforce this concept. For example, Kluane Spake, writes, "The German translation of that word, sich unterstellen, means to place oneself at a disposition of another." It can also be a military term referring to the equal sharing of tasks, to support, to fulfill one's part of the assignment." Believe me, I understand people want to believe what they want to but the term was not intended as what western society as depicted its a scheme .....Try looking it up in Hebrew it doesn't even exists- Good luck!

Sister Angela, thank you for your response. You definitely have much more Greek training that I do. Did you study Koine or Classical Greek? Maybe that is where the difference in definition is coming in. Either way, thanks again for taking the time to help me out. I am a little confused though, in your first post you said the "submit" (hupotasso in the Greek) should be translated as "adapt" instead of "submit." This is the main reason I responded. In your most resent post, you said that hupotasso means to "get under", or "put in order." So, does it mean all three of these? Also, James 4:7 uses hupotasso also. It is translated in almost every translation as "submit." and it says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God." Are you saying the correct translation should be "get under God" or "Adapt to God"? The only reason I am so curious about this is because, if you are correct, and every translator is wrong, then your translation changes the meaning of 49 verses in the Bible where hupotasso is used. Every time hupotasso was used, it was translated to either, "obey", "submit", "subdue" or "subject." Do you have a different scholarly reference or a lexicon that you are using? Any help would be much appreciated. By the way, submission is not a bad thing, as some make it out to be. There are times I submit to my wife and times when she submits to me. The main idea is that one is not so full of pride that they are unwilling to put someone before themselves. Jesus gave us the example, he put everyone before himself. Also, why is it that many women try to find a different word for "submit" and downgrade it to "support" or something like that when the next verse tells the man to give his life for his wife as Christ did for the Church. If a wife wont even "submit" to her husband, then why does she deserve a husband that would die for her? That is the story of the Gospel. We don't deserve God, but Jesus died for us anyway, while we were still sinners. Praise God!

Letting your wife let go of what God called her to do as a worship leader and being a slave to u what u want to do is not Bible! " For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."- Ephesians 2:10. We all have a calling ( make and female). It's not a help-mate is it a partnership to create a family and serve God together.

Surf Sand I would also encourage you to talk to a pastor or counselor. While it is good to be an example to your husband, but there can be harmful circumstances that you should avoid. So, find a pastor and talk to them and then listen to them. Afterward, I would suggest finding Christian community.

Probably a lot of the ubiquitous confusion comes in poor translations of the Bible. "Be subject to" better conveys the grammatical nuance of the Greek PASSIVE voice Ephesians 5:24). It’s a state of being; being “subject to” your husband is like being “subject to” gravity. The word “submit” implies choice/volition on the part of the “submitter”. "Be submissive to" and has caused untold grief and strife (since most marriages don't work quite as well as Lisa seems to assume they do).

I just do not get it. That's the e.g of submission?? if my Husband (or if I were a man, my Wife) offered me a reason for not wanting or wanting something and I sit and think that ok fine this makes sense and is of God, then I would go ahead with doing it. If my Husband told me to do some crap then no I won't do it, the idea isn't who it's coming from, the idea is THE IDEA! ugggh, once it is of God then there goes your answer. The goal is to be like Jesus so wives submit to their husbands because Jesus submitted to the Father? But, actually, we're ALL called to be like Jesus. So, that would be mutual submission, not wifely submission. Also, Francis claims that "no one else acts like that" at the end when he's praising Lisa for being so submissive...but history shows us that women generally give up their dreams for their husbands way more than the other way around, so how will submission get attention?
