I don't know if anybody caught this but while we were watching the angle being formed this man was switching hands and hammering just as efficiently with each.

My takeaway from this is that Roy is ambidextrous. The technique appears to be a simple and novel way to get results. I don't think you're losing too much mass in the corner and the results look clean and crisp. I'll definitely try this myself!

Me too. My forge is still a major freaking issue. I made to it big I think. I built it out of a old charbroil grill.

Ohhh the silent treatment eh, nyuk nyuk nyuk. 😂 Well that's a true 1st. Seen several other ways and even other smiths , but this is new to me and IMHO far faster than the other ways. Thank you 🙏 God bless and keep you now, well wishes Sir "curly" out 🔥⚒️🧙🏼‍♂️

Excellent lesson! Faster and better control than the corner of the anvil. Contemplating if a backing hammer on the opposite side might even improve it a bit more.

Good stuff! Never seen this technique.Ive done square corners in the past by folding the hot bar all the way over then forge a 45* angle on the tip of the bend.Unfold the bend and are very close to a squared 90* corner.Thanks Roy!

Nice use of the vice to work on making the square corners 👍. I never thought of using the vice that way. I would have probably tried to fight over the edge of the anvil.

Going to try that method to do 90 corner, got to be quicker than a big upset in centre of bar!
@ChristCenteredIronworks
@ChristCenteredIronworks 3 жыл бұрын
This method is very quick and a lot easier than the upsetting process in the center of the bar. Plus you can use this technique on any length of bar

Thanks for showing this trick. I’m getting ready to make a pound in lantern hook out of some square bar and remembered this video. It looks so much easier than upsetting the stock to make the corner. Is there a specific amount of bend that needs to be done for this technique? It looks like you bent the bar approximately 110-120 degrees.

It looks like it might thin out a little near the corners is it? Could it be beneficial to upset it a little before doing the bend or would it be unnecessary? Thinking of making some log dogs. Excellent video never thought of doing it this way. Keep up the good work

You might get better results if you bolstered the opposite side of the angle with a heavy hammer when upsetting in the vise. Not sure, but I think you'd get more upsetting into the corner itself.

Has anyone seen this done with actual square corners? Whenever I see it the corner is always tapered/rounded
@ChristCenteredIronworks

This method will produce very square corners.. In this video the upset square corners needed to be not completely square as this bar will be turned into a S-scroll
