Shame that $130,000,000 couldn't be used to feed and house the poor and homeless...

Good point, they should really take a page out of their own book given it says the following. Much better off respectfully and humbly putting the money toward other causes/initiatives. "Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven."

A lost cause from the beginning. The experts said not to rebuild. They clearly looked at the task, the possibility of unknown problems appearing, and those in favour overrode and went ahead. In the process former Bishop Matthew’s was lambasted when she stuck to her decision. In my opinion the Anglicans should pay for all of what is required. Christchurch CC and the Government should not have put in the money as has recently been pointed out by the Finance Minister, that this is a private and religious project, when turning down a request for an extra $60 million. Whether the Christchurch Diocese raises the money locally, in the Canterbury area or the wider Anglican community in NZ is where this should fall. In times like now, public money should be for the wider public good. I hope future Governments will take heed of this, and not only for this type of project. Think of the sporting groups that have dipped their hands into taxpayers pockets over recent years, and the spin that has been put on justifying them.
