And our city (Tauranga) has been infested with maori artworks everywhere. In the foot paths, on the roads, in our library. There is NO European artwork. Its a disgusting waste of money and racists and dominating.

'beautification' would be worth it if they actually did it right, like dedicated areas. Keep roads as roads, nature as nature, mixing the 2 is silly, yea, those roadside flowerbeds. . . . just further cost to maintain them

A lost cause from the beginning. The experts said not to rebuild. They clearly looked at the task, the possibility of unknown problems appearing, and those in favour overrode and went ahead. In the process former Bishop Matthew’s was lambasted when she stuck to her decision. In my opinion the Anglicans should pay for all of what is required. Christchurch CC and the Government should not have put in the money as has recently been pointed out by the Finance Minister, that this is a private and religious project, when turning down a request for an extra $60 million. Whether the Christchurch Diocese raises the money locally, in the Canterbury area or the wider Anglican community in NZ is where this should fall. In times like now, public money should be for the wider public good. I hope future Governments will take heed of this, and not only for this type of project. Think of the sporting groups that have dipped their hands into taxpayers pockets over recent years, and the spin that has been put on justifying them.

Good point, they should really take a page out of their own book given it says the following. Much better off respectfully and humbly putting the money toward other causes/initiatives. "Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven."

Sick of people saying it doesn't take any longer to get where your going. An extra 20km/h is saves you over 10 mins for every hour you drive at that speed. Add to that compounding effects from traffic lights when you get into town and it can easily add up to 25 minutes difference. People seem to think they can get the road toll to zero by limiting/reducing speed which is never going to happen - how about make roads which are capable of handling traffic at a reasonable speed and actually employ a road repair system which doesn't just patch holes with sinking piles of asphalt every 3 months. This country is turning into more and more of a laughing stock every year

So basically the same speed as England on their motorways which are way more congested than the southern motorway. Drive the M25 in the slow lane at 120ks and have a bmw behind you flashing their lights to go faster.

"Cost Benefit Analysis" regarding parking fines...If they're to Cheap its not worth the stress of over staying your time limit. Speeding ... Traveling regularly as a professional driver. 4-5 minutes extra an hour can mean the difference between getting home each night or staying in a shady area with no toilet facilities. Yeah Its also better to be 30 minutes late, than 30 years to early. However Speeding on a motorway at 120 is safer than driving in built up areas at legal limits.

People do 120 now because it is a safe road. If you want to drive 90 then drive in the left lane with the trucks. 120 is not unsafe on a very well built motorway

I am all for the restoration of old buildings, go for it but with your own money. The idiots in the Christchurch city council already in 2.4 billion dollars of debt through incompetence, just gave these people another 8 million dollars which we will have to pay back to the lenders. When Anderton and Burton put for this plan and dropped the cost from 250 million dollars down to 50 million dollars, I said then it can't be done and we will have to pay for it. It belongs to the church leave them to it. STOP SPENDING OUR MONEY ON PRIVATELY OWNED BUILDINGS.

I live in Christchurch, so I am well aware of the story that goes with Cathedral, damage 3 times in earthquakes in the last 100+ years. (Yes, around every 70 years Christchurch gets struck with an earthquake), 2nd time it was damaged, the family that help pay the first time for its repair said they wouldn't do it again. Those who talk about being it being 'Heart' of Christchurch - absolute rubbish. Had a VERY small congregation and was mostly seen as a tourist destination. It had cafe to help bring in funds for its upkeep. And on top all this the church didn't want it repaired. This 'repair' was going to be at a minimum $250 million, now with a shortfall of $114 million. Church would rather keep their money) And I suspect wouldn't end there, going past even this. As skillfully and brilliantly as it was built (excellent tradesmen), it was nothing more than a Victorian Mock-Gothic heavy lump (Constructed out of dark local basalt stone and limestone cement). Not the best for earthquake zones. I have been a builder for over 40 years, worked on buildings/churches in the UK that were over 1,000 years old and as much as I want this building 'saved' (losing the work of skilled craftsman is never good). THIS IS NOT ONE THAT'S WORTH IT.

If you want your cathedral rebuilt, then the Anglicans should put their hands in their own pockets. As it is as a taxpayer who doesn’t live near Christchurch, money from my taxes has gone towards this shambles. Right from the beginning the experts said don’t rebuild, but no a group of deluded people went ahead against very good advice. A new smaller building could have been built new from the insurance and a little more. Also the long suffering Christchurch ratepayers has had their pockets raided into the bargain. What is wrong with the cardboard cathedral? It could have been kept going until a new build was ready. This must go down in the history of Christchurch as the worst project ever attempted.

Christchurch was surveyed soon after the quakes and the people overwhelmingly supported the building of a new cathedral. Then people like Jim Anderton got involved and wrecked the whole thing, insisting the old building was repaired. Christchurch would have its cathedral now had they done the sensible thing - build a new cathedral.

I too am a Christian and do not think much of turning places of worship into tourist attractions. One should be visiting such a place to worship God not to admire architecture and man's achievements. Those who do not worship there should not be required to finance its restoration if that is what is decided. Man worships God from the heart and perhaps it is time we realised that. God does not require a magnificent building so that he can receive our worship. The money in my opinion would be better spent doing God's work rather than rebuilding a structure that needs millions spent on it to make it earthquake proof.

It sad that the history of Christchurch settlement and the 792 Canterbury Pilgrims that built it is lost upon council and ratepayers. Without Christ or the church, would the city itself exist as Christchurch? The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act (CER Act) should have placed the cathedral and the city's namesake as a priority IMO. Those that have and own the direct Antarctic Direct Energy Weapons can afford to chip in...
