The Earthquake 2011 6.2 quake was VERY close and shallow within 20 Km's of the CBD causing US$35 billion in damage along with the 7.1 magnitude quake that cause less damage in 2010. To easily understanding Earthquake damage think of a bomb, a 100 megaton nuclear weapon is largely not a problem 500km's away, however small a hand grenade is a major problem if you are holding it :P. The 2011 CHCH Earthquake caused "much" higher ground acceleration than what any Japan city felt form the 9.1 quake in the same 2011 year, obviously the Japan tsunami did most of their damage.

I grew up there and it was a beautiful historic city before the bog earthquake that decimated it. My old high school in historic buildings as gone, as well as some of my former work places. All gone, along with the Marvelous Gothic cathedral and many other landmarks. It will never be the same again, sadly.
