Christchurch: Shopping Mall with shipping containers after earthquakes

Jay Young lol.. I did go to church last Sunday and I have videotaped it, it was a lovely Greek Orthodox church in Christchurch here in New Zealand, I will be uploading that video soon.. Yesterday, however, I videotaped three churches (I am now in Dunedin, still in New Zealand) and you can see one of them, the Catholic Cathedral of St Joseph's; here, I try to explain a few of the elements of (my favorite) Gothic architecture, if you get to watch it, let me know what you think..

Thank you for showcasing a place that gave me one of my favourite experiences and memories from my bucket-list trip to Christchurch! I went to Chch to visit the graves of my gggGrandparents at Addington Cemetery. Sadly, their headstone was pretty much pummeled to gravel by the 2011 earthquake. Before that it had been broken in three pieces and was laying face-down, so the disappointment was real. Then, after learning about this, I found myself at this incredible place! There was a man there who made crickets with palm fronds and traded them to passersby for cigarettes. This shopping center is proof of the power of the people of New Zealand to overcome adversities. I'd give my last penny to be able to immigrate to NZ, following in my ancestors' footsteps, even if I would be 156 years too late!

Hi and thank you for your comments. I was in NZ just a few months ago and I have videotaped the two oldest cemeteries with the destroyed tombstones (from the earthquakes a few years back).. I will be publishing these videos in 2021.. Regarding the container shopping center, sadly, it does not exist anymore but they have built a beautiful shopping complex in its place..

I have traveled all over Europe and parts of Africa, and almost all of North America, but no place I have been to captured my heart like New Zealand. The people, the geography, the culture and cuisine, all of it had me enraptured. I could live on feijoas and green lipped mussels, and lamb shanks! Ever since I experienced that container shopping center I have dreamed of building a container home and living in it with my animals. Can't wait to see your video!

@@VicStefanu This font should be bold and green - I am SO jealous that you are planning to go back! On the off chance that you are not aware of this, many of the cemeteries in Christchurch are searchable online. My gggGrandparents were buried in Addington Cemetery, and I not only found their graves recorded there, but a map showing its location was presented as well. I was also able to get the newspaper obits for both of them through the National Library website, Papers Past. Thought I would mention it in case your cemetery videos draw any questions from your viewers. Have a safe and exciting trip when you go back to New Zealand, and enjoy a couple of feijoas for me!

No, unfortunately it was taken apart a few years ago and a new shopping centre built in its location..

@@VicStefanu Yeah figured that out on Google Maps Street View. It looks like it would make a good outlet centre lf it was rebuilt somewhere else, but anyways. What is there now is even better.

Jay Young It is really a very beautiful place to visit and to walk around, I went there every day since it was very close to my hotel. I will be uploading a video with the destruction caused from the 2011 earthquakes, the city is still (mostly) destroyed and no recovery in sight for at least another 5 years.. These shipping containers were a great idea..
