I'm surprised people don't see what Horner means in this. He's saying skipping Monaco for Indy 500 would be unimaginable for any competitive F1 team's first driver. Would Horner let Ricciardo run Indy or Le Mans? Hell no, he already is competitive. But he does understand why McLaren and Alonso are doing it, because they were once competitive team/driver that have been pushed to the bottom of the grid because of Honda dawdling. McLaren needs a morale boost, Nando needs a morale boost. This is the only way they can do it, and Christian Horner understands that.

@Alantheleopard7 жыл бұрын
My apologies for saying this but- aren´t you letting yourself be driven too far away by emotions and excitement? Great a driver as Fernando is (undeniable), he still needs some practice, and in the case of a rookie like him, someone who has never been in contact with an Indy car before, needs more practice than anyone else. Likewise he needed some practice when he made his debut in F1, and in fact not only did he gain experience with the Minardi for a whole year but also even before that he tested some 2000 Jaguar, as far as I can remember now. And last, he made just 51 laps on the Indy car, while in Indy they seem to make about 200 laps races, and altogether. Hardly ever do F1 drivers do those many laps; not even in pre-season training. Alonso is not God; not even Julius Caesar. "Vidi, vi, vici"? Quite improbable (yet not impossible). Better keep our feet on the ground and stay cautious.

David JR why do you have to refer to us Americans idiots? We just have a different way of racing we don't just do left turns all day we have road courses as well. The whole month is dedicated to one of the world's biggest race the Indy 500. Just as the Scandinavians have rallying, rest of Europe has road racing and other technical circuits, while we have a mixture of both oval racing and road racing. There's no need to insult us I appreciate other disciplines of motorsports and you should too my friend it'll open your eyes.

This is a side effect of the golden age of racing being in history books. The time where drivers would switch venues to keep things new and interesting is gone. I am sure that Alonso can acquit himself very well. every venue of racing has to be a business and this is simply good business for all involved especially sense Alonso is in no points race it costs nothing for Honda to lose him at Monaco, the least competitive race of the year

Horner isnt even thinking. Rossi won the 500 and it was his 2nd oval race. so with training and practice Alonso still needs a psychiatrist?? Listen up, you have 3 great racers today and only three. The others are just very good. Great: Seb, Lewis and Alonso. Only a 12 year old would think he's not a top man just because his team has been stinky 3 years. Wheel to wheel he'll take on anyone in the world in fact, he's better today than he was during his WDC years.

Yeah, he was clearly joking about the psychiatrist thing (Horner is a fool though, lol). I don't buy into that "depressed driver" thing anyway. Maybe frustrated. But Alonso is a real fighter, who never gives up, otherwise his performance would have suffered under it, at some point in his career. But he just keeps giving everything, and mostly delivers good results, with the limitation of a bad car, really. He already impressed me in his Minardi year, which was the worst car back then, but, he frequently left other cars behind him, which were suppoed to be faster. He's a fighter, and he will keep on fighting. Some people already see him out of F1. I don't think so. I'm sure he'll still race a few years. And deservedly so. He probably has too few world championship titles for a guy of his class.

Oh, F1 guys. Calm down. It's OK, it's OK for a guy to come from F1 to race and possibly win Indy 500. This cat says Fernando needs to see a "psychiatrist" for racing in the INDY 500. "It is the nuttiest race I have ever seen!" Of course, w/ due respect to Turn One (the toughest Oval Turn 1) in America... he seems to think someone who has not raced an Oval cannot do it. (Cough) 2016 American former F1 driver Rossi, never (like Fernando) raced an Oval or even practiced at the speedway. So, I'm calling this guy bunk. Fernando is a 2 time F1 champ. Gone down in my as a fair person for me,Alonso I guess needs a stress buster of sorts I think and doing this one off race is maybe it,his current F1 Car is pants,without a decent power unit he is only good enough to finish mid field at best,he is also up against the fact that there are more good young Drivers coming from the feeder Championships too,he is the Wong side of thirty in F1 terms,the top teams have there ideal no1 and no2 drivers so there is no chance a top team will take him on even if there is a place for him,Alonso wants another Championship,it would in his mind complete his F1 career and who are we to burst his bubble,the fact remains,he might never get the chance,and for MrHorner to a statement like that doesn't say much about his respect for others.

I love how NOBODY can actually fucking understand that the title of the video is WRONG. Horner does not call Alonso mad, or says that he needs a psych. He says that about Zak Brown. 'Earlier this week McLaren shocked many in the paddock when it was announced that Alonso would miss this year’s Monaco Grand Prix to race in the 101st Indianapolis 500. The Spaniard has a month and a half to prepare for the IndyCar race, and has to do so between his Formula 1 commitments. Horner reckons McLaren and the driver are “barking mad” for doing so. “It’s a difficult one for Fernando, he’s having a tough time,” the Red Bull team boss said in Friday’s press conference in Bahrain. “Zak [Brown] has got a problem, he’s got a depressed driver on his hands, he’s trying to keep him motivated. “He’s come up with this idea, send him to Indianapolis. “He must be barking mad, it’s the nuttiest race I’ve ever seen. “No testing, he’s going to just jump in the car… Turn 1 is a proper turn, it’s easy flat the whole way round. “I think he needs to see a psychiatrist, personally!” He added: “Would we let our drivers do it? No.'

While I think F1 cars are about as highly advanced as a race car can be, I also think many who participate in F1 are a bunch of rich pricks that have simply forgotten what racing is really about. Watch an Indy race, see how close the pack is, you don't see a leader out in front for the most part, you don't have one guy dominating every event. These guy's really do mix it up, and I think F1 would be much more watchable if it had any similarity.
