Good discussion. I think Keith Ward was trying to get Alex to see that some descriptive statements are inherently prescriptive. Alex was making a rather pedantic rebuttal in saying that there is a hidden premise in descriptive statements that ought to be stated explicitly. It's as if Alex says that instead of saying, "Fire! Run!," you ought to say, "Fire! Run! Why? Because you ought to save yourselves! You ought to save yourselves because it's good to do so! Hmmm... but why do good things!?" 😱 Perhaps Keith could've done a better job explaining why facts and values are entangled. I don't think you can ever justify why you ought to do good things. Things that are good are by definition things you ought to do and that's that. Why they are good is a discussion that makes sense. What good is and why you ought to do it seems as pointless as asking what truth is and what makes that definition of truth true. Truth is undefinable within a formal system of logic and is a primitive thing you have to presuppose before you can speak sensibly. Similarly, you have to believe goodness and beauty are valuable in and of themselves to make sense of other, more derived values like honour, kindness, gracefulness, sexiness, etc.

Alex reminds me of Sam Harris when it comes to stay laser focused on the core topic of the dispute throughout the debate and he constantly ensures he fully understands in real time his opponent's view so that he can bring up the best counter argument at any given point. On a separate note, if senior philosophy professors can remain this confused about core topics like morality after a lifetime of thinking, it's genuinely a mystery to me how the enlightenment has managed to bring about progress at scale in just about a handful of centuries. These are truly unprecedented good times to be alive.

The ought could be argued by Christian theism to be Theosis: i.e. that "the ought to do good" is found in the fulfilment of one's own nature. That is, one becomes intrinsically more human/ more real (not less), by choosing the good. The ought is a choice, it is not forced (i.e. there is argued to be agency/free will in Christian theism). But the choosing bears out its intrinsic 'realness'. In being chosen the good equals more fulfilment, more depth, more character, more joy, more happiness, more pleasure...more of being human. In the theosis understanding one discovers one's own nature as well as God's nature and learns that the commonality is Person/I AM and what is intrinsic to being Person/I AM. This would of course hinge on if the I AM is intrinsic. However, since it is supremely difficult to avoid starting from "I" as the starting point of all discussion, debate, meaning, use of language/concepts/ideas etc, this can be argued to be the more plausible starting point. In other words, Descartes view of Thinking Therefore I AM would be reversed to I AM Therefore Thinking and the logic flows out from there.

System is the problem 🏡 Our Life should be around these Great Qualities 1, Show all living creatures; all the love and kindness as much as you can. 2, Only try to be honest with yourself. If you try to be honest with others, you will get into big trouble soon or later. 3, Aim only one target at a time; otherwise you are chasing two rabbits and you will miss both. So, the reason behind it. Have one powerful reason and never ever give up the one you want the most. 4, Don't try to be good person only but be the powerful person. We will grow to be the one or we will die. There is no other choice. 5, Always learn and look for to improve something your life. 6, You are not alone. Love and faith the high power reduces unnecessary stress in life. But never completely rely on it. 7, Success and happiness are the byproducts of our usefulness. So, always increase the possibility of success. 8, Life is not going to be easy. Because of our unnecessary things. Eliminate all the unnecessary things as much as you can by organising yourself well with the environments. 9, Never believe anything without the proper evidences. 10, Always try to give more than you take. Because it is dignity/ character of the divinity within you. 🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all. People are controlled by system why? The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are at the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more. Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. You are everything that you have ever done to yourself. The choices you make directly affect the outcome of your life. - (Food Matters Documentary in Netflix) 😊 Well, I truly love God. I am not religious but very spiritual person. So, I believe 1) Religion is the beliefs in someone experiences But spirituality is having my own experiences. The mainstream religions people promote religious ideology by giving guidelines and guide but In my spiritual life; I do not want anyone or anything between God and me to restrict my freedom to worship God. 2) We do not need any authorities to do good work. The god work is the good work always. In contrast; organised mainstream religions are claiming that they have the authorities to do God works as leaders so on. 3) God is not capable of doing wrong thing, change the past for us and create anything out of nothing for us. Nothing means not anything. So, even God is limited. The mainstream religious people believe that God is unlimited. 4) God wants us to take responsibilities for our righteousness life but not for all the consequences of our actions because they are continued to exist among us. So, How can god punish us for all our consequences? The mainstream religious people believe we are full of sins because of all our actions. 5) Freewill is an illusion. People always choose the perceived path of greatest pleasure. So, we do not have choices all the time. In contrast teachings of the mainstream religions are promoting people to do god's will always because we all have choices of freewill always. 6) We can not separate everything into groups. So, everything for good and evil and there's no success and failure for everything. If everything is real then real things can not be threatened. Once you come to understand that God/The Holy Spirit is in each of us, You will no longer need a Book to tell you how to live. Then why we need religious scriptures? The Virtue is the expression of the basic goodness in our actions. The Basic goodness is the fundamental worthiness of every individuals. We are worthy to God always in everything. 7) Beliefs in a cruel God makes a cruel man. No matter what; every living creatures has the right to live and What makes their life cheap? Everything depends on everything. Nothing too big or too small in value. We can not love and hate at the same time; Being a vegetarian means love without cruelty happily. The mainstream religious people are killing people and sacrificing animals in the name of God. They promote God's cruel punishments. The Punishment is endless for Sinners/Devil according to religious scriptures. But God is love always. Overcome hate with love. If all religions for peace, unity? No way. Because they are not for peace. 8) Well, The God gave us everything to go from moment to moment in our lives as we do our part and pray only to thank god then the Love is in progress. The Love is always for everyone. We are always worthy of the God's love. Our greatest fear is; not to be loved by anyone but we are all loved by someone. When we eliminate all our unnecessary differences among us then true peaceful life is possible with the true love. If we can't find the peace within ourselves then we will never find it anywhere else. 9) This is the Fight for independence and freedom of humanity to worship God freely without religious guide and guidelines to restrict us. Unnecessarily, We do not want third party controls over us in anything ; especially in spirituality. 10) Revive Survive Thrive. "Love thy neighbor like yourself" doesn't work if you hate yourself now does it?
@globalunconscious3 жыл бұрын
It only works on the level of showing the same respect for the free will and desires of the other, as you would wish others to do for you. If Love = empowerment, then you would wish your goals to be empowered in the same manner as you empower another's goals. It is not true that if I like flowers that I SHOULD give others flowers. NOTE: I'm not shouting but using capitalization for easier reading. It is true that if I like being given things THAT I LIKE, that I should give other people things THAT THEY LIKE. The only way to know how to TREAT another person, or how to LOVE another person is to KNOW that person. There are many ways to know a person, but asking them what they would like, and what their goals are are pretty good ways to know how best to LOVE someone. I would state that it is impossible to LOVE something you do not know. There is no universal action that is 'wanted' by every human on the planet. Even being asked 'what would you like' is not welcomed by many. The example that is often in my head is likening 'love thy neighbour as thyself' with 'do no harm'. To me these are the same thing when you breakdown what they mean. Just like there is no way to know when you are helping someone without asking them, or knowing them, there is ALSO no way of knowing what will hurt someone without the same sort of inquiry. A specific example of this is a person bleeding alone on a road. You do not know if leaving the person alone will harm the person, and you do not know whether bringing them to medical care is the will of the person, without further information. 'I Robot' Isaac Asimov's rule: ".. or through inaction allow a human to come to harm" comes to mind. If the human on the road wished to die, then you would need to ask that person if that is their WILL, if it is not obvious. If the human on the road wished to be helped, then you would need to ask the person.. or in absence of more information you could gamble one way or the other. There is still no way to know if harm or help is the result of your actions. Perhaps blood transfusions are not their will, but setting their bones back in place is their will. It is 'respect of their unique will' that is the common thread between 'do no harm' and 'love thy neighbour'

@J w Not sure I have a preference when it comes to Alex of GMS, and even RR has shown significant growth. I may disagree with their atheists agenda, as it never seems to address anything I happen to believe yet keeps pretending it does, but I can hardly blame them as most people seem ignorant of Hempel's paradox to the degree most of them make claims similar to "white ravens don't exist" by merely having observed black ravens as validation for that claim. Even physicists repeatedly make the mistake of claiming to be talking about the (entire) universe while merely being talking about only the visible part of the universe. People are sloppy and often leave out necessarily intended restrictions that apply to their statements as they haven't considered the possibility another person wouldn't necessarily make the same restriction. For instance the statement "5+5=10" is valid when applying a decimal number system, since a decimal number system is the default for most people in the western world we don't mention the number system the statement is made in. But "4+4=10" is equally valid when applying an octal number system, however when making a statement like this, only few people will understand the truth of it if you don't mention you are applying an octal number system, most would assume the statement is made in a decimal number system even though the applied number system isn't mentioned.
@BlacksmithTWD3 жыл бұрын
@Egalitarian 4life If you don't know what the other person is talking about, you cannot possibly derive to a conclusion about what is stated, and certainly can't draw the conclusion the other person is pretending. It's obvious that by this statement you are pretending to know something you denied to know in the previous sentence, you are not even internally consistent in your claims. Either you don't know what the other person is talking about, or you do know what the other person is talking about and have evidence for the other person to be pretending. You can't have it both ways.

@@FendiYT The concept of "sin" is a man made construct to strike fear into weak minds who can't be independently good to themselves and other people, and so builds a pseudo-foundation of morals. The problem with you religious people, is that you bunch religion and morals into one ball, and if I were to snatch that ball and throw it away, you are left with no morals, because it was based on a fictional foundation that was never built on instinct. Another problem is you don't argue in a logical, analytical and scientific way. You can't escape science, it's a method to observing, testing, and proving hypotheses right or wrong through what can be seen, calculated and observed to a point where it's so well proven correct that it functionally becomes fact. If I take your religion, I take your good with it. You on the other hand, can't take anything from us, because morals is instinct, it's biological. The only way to take from our morals is to kill us, but that act would be evil, wouldn't it? Remember, animals know no such thing of religion. They are built to survive, and if they are social creatures, will ensure the safety and well-being of their kind. Human beings just took this to a complex level.

@@seemlyme Science is about giving hard proven facts from an unbiased point of view. However... Love is something powerful and can till an extent be explained by science on how it works. But... Mature atheists are not arrogant people who claim to know everything. After all we know most facts, but people look for "meaning". Now, meaning is a man made idea, just as sin is an idea, or rather a concept own to only humans. Atheists are looking for meaning too. But this doesn't necessarily mean you have to develop a religion to find meaning. Now I understand you are not really religious, but rather just spiritual. And I think there comes an inevitable point in anybody's life - atheist OR religious, that we start thinking abstractly about what can make you happy? What makes your life worth living? It all comes down to comforting ourselves in a world where you can become prey. And because we are so emotionally complex, we want to find meaning. And I think this is why people develop organized beliefs, so that they comfort themselves from the dark truth that we are here to hunt kill, survive, and eventually die. Because we are so emotionally complex, we just can't accept the simplicity and coldness of existence. And this is what sets atheists apart from believers. Atheists acknowledge the cold dark truth, but they are reluctant to comfort, because it is deceiving from the truth. Atheists at the end of the day just want to be happy, they just don't use religion, because of how artificial it is.

There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. I see so many people making superficial bully-type commentaries about the Christian professor before they can even watch half of the video. This is not only useless, but it also hinders debate. The basis for atheist morality is a fascinating, complex topic of discussion, and if you can't even bother to listen to a different point of view without insulting the speaker, why waste your time watching?

Yeah because of the things he has said before even half the video is over are ridiculous, I don't need to finish the whole video to call them out as utterly ridiculous, the same old brainwashed nonsense one has heard hundreds of times in other debates and even dangerous.

@Max Payne What do you mean by "what God says is good"? What does "good" mean? We have to be aware of the fact that when we define something, all we're doing is looking at a concept and labeling it. So what is the concept you're assigning the label, "good", to? If, when you say that something is "good", you mean that something is consistent with God's nature, then you're simply defining good to be whatever is consistent with God's nature. And if that is a specific definition (meaning that that is exactly what you mean by "good" and nothing else), then that's _all_ "good" means. This implies that _whatever_ God's nature is, good is the label you're using the describe it. Meaning that if God had been we would now consider to be bad (i.e. tortures children for his own pleasure, inflicts unnecessary harm...), then those actions are good because they _would certainly be_ consistent with God's nature. Because that's what he does in this hypothetical universe. There's nothing logically impossible about this scenario. You certainly wouldn't define good that way. But why? Why isn't that God a good person? Perhaps because you are thinking of something that exists outside of God when you think of good. You probably think of things like kindness, and generosity, and honesty when you think of good. But why? If good is just that which is consistent with God's nature, then kindness clearly isn't a good thing in that universe. If you say "well I mean THIS universe's God, not just a hypothetical God." Ok, but what makes this universe's God different? He has a different nature. He's kind, and loving, etc. But these are all things that we can identify and understand without reference to God. So what you mean when you mean good isn't something that requires God. It's something we can understand and describe without God.
@lllULTIMATEMASTERlll3 жыл бұрын
@Max Payne I understand that it may seem like philosophical "jargonism". But I assure you that the question you're asking is a bit more complicated than you seem to think it is. I was trying to be as precise as I could because there's a lot of room for confusion. But I admit it wasn't the best explanation. I also assumed you were more familiar with the arguments from both sides. I'll try to be a bit simpler (which may result in a loss of information). Does God commanding something make it good? Or is there some criteria that God uses to determine whether something is allowable? If there is some criteria that God uses to determine whether something should be allowable or not, then we don't need God to allow it or disallow it. We could just find out what the criteria that he's using is. Therefore, we don't even need God to know whether something is good or not. The other alternative is there is _no_ criteria that God uses to determine whether something is good or not. If there's no criteria, then it's just arbitrary. Surely, you don't like either possibility. This is the problem. Does this make sense? I'm not saying that it's necessarily a problem. Just that it has to be either one of these possibilities. But once you realize that both of them make the concept of God-given morality seem a bit superficial, you might have issues.

5:58 ~'So that's step one; for morality to be important to me, I have to believe that it's true that I ought to be compassionate to people, in an objective sense.' -- What I hear here is him expressing his preferences, the things he cares about, and they are shockingly limited. The proper response should have been "What we're debating here is whether we can have morality without believing in God?" "Oh yes we can" Everyone would agree on the fact that someone who doesn't believe in God can have a proper moral ethics and values. The question is "how we can explain the existence of morality when we deny the existence of higher being that have that standard of Good ontologically" A person can know these moral ethics without believing in God, but ultimately he/she won't have anything to ground on to reason why those moral values exist? why should every single human being follow the same principles of morality if some random atheist says so? why should I follow the opinion of some human like me on how I should behave and act? There are also some cases where the choice that is moral doesn't even makes sense to reason it. For instance, forgiving someone that have done pretty bad things to you....... personally, I won't have any reason why not to take vengeance for the sake of revenge.

Hey Alex, I've watched a lot of your videos and I'm struggling here to understand your view of morality. Do you consider yourself a utilitarian and consequentialist? Would it be correct to say you believe morality is subjective, and you start with the assumption that you ought to do good, and "good" isn't something that can be defined, it's an intuition? I'm not sure how you make the assumption that you ought to do good, so when you argue against other people's morals, does that also start with the assumption that *they* assume that *they* ought to do good? How would you convince someone that doesn't make that assumption, how would you talk to a moral nihilist or moral egoist? On another note, I think you should look more into leftism. You have said you are against all oppression, but it seems like you're in favor of capitalism which to me says you aren't against the source of many of the world's problems. Marxists examine the world through the lens of historical materialism and anarchists examine the world through the lens of hierarchy. Both carry a lot of insight into what's wrong with the world, and it's good because they don't make any grand statements about some grand human nature, but rather a more objective analysis of how people behave under the specific material conditions they are in. Since you're open-minded enough to embrace veganism, I hope you can find yourself at least questioning the liberal worldview you were taught. Maybe you can get into some conversations with leftist youtubers like Philosophy Tube, ContraPoints, or Vaush. Since you're a big reader, in your political journey I recommend: "Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media" by Herman & Chomsky "The Communist Manifesto" by Marx & Engels "A People's History of the United States" by Zinn "My Disillusionment in Russia" by Goldman "Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution" by Kropotkin Anyways, hope you see this and I'm eager for a reply!

You have given no proof of your assertion that anything Alex said was “nonsense.” I also find it telling that you really don’t give any proof for anything you said. Your feelings on these matter’s don’t count for much of anything as they can’t be given as proof. @J w ??? you really misunderstood what Alex was saying. He was giving analogies to demonstrate that theistic base of morality is in the end equivalent to self declared moral framework. He has demonstrated that it is essentially equivalent. Some may be motivated more by the claim that the moral framework is god-given, but that is a distinction without a real difference.
@colinrobertson75803 жыл бұрын
@J w the question asked by the audience at the end demonstrated clearly how the professor's argument was incoherent. She asked if you needed to believe in a God or if God needed to exist. It is impossible to demonstrate the difference, and as such any reason for believing to be good including the existence of a god is equivalent to any other. The professor believe that his definition is based in objective truth, however he cannot prove that, which makes him the same as everyone else asserting objective moral truth. The hidden argument is that either believing in anything is sufficient or believing in one very specific definition of one god is necessary. Which means that less than 5% of the world is capable of proper moral reasoning, which is ridiculous. Our morality is based in our biology which is why moral reasoning can be completely secular, and it often is, even for the religious.

@@ot-slice295 I think the problem here is the imprecise wording used in "If something is true, something must make it true". What are these somethings? I think the first something can only be a claim. For instance "the sky is blue". And I think a claim is either true or it is not. The problem isn't that it requires something to make it true, but rather we need something to make it reasonable to believe the claim to be true. And that second something can only be facts.

I think you’re misunderstanding what the debate was about. Prof. Ward did not concede the debate at the end because the topic was not “can there be morality without god?” It was “Is morality without god bankrupt?” Prof. Ward never disputed that morality can exist without god, and made this clear in his opening statement. He was trying to prove that there is no reason to follow morality without god.

The point is that to have an atheistic morality that actually works, we need extremely rational people while a religious morality is grounded on the instinctive fear of death which works with most of the people.

People do not need to believe in a spiritual observer to see others as conscious entities, to understand their experiences in terms of your own or to treat them accordingly.. This is an act of perception and understanding, it's a personal realisation. Conversely threats of punishment or reward are external, social factors. The Dog doesn't require a God to be trained, just approval and disapproval. Therefore moral behaviour can be approached through two different directions, the internal and the external and neither depends on the supernatural or suffers from it's absence.

Identifying what is moral and what is not is a valuable skill to have when we think on an evolutionary basis. We are social animals and therefore it's not hard to see that individuals that do things that other individuals don't like, survive less often to reproduce.

Sorry, but I have to "virtually" smirk at Alex for executing (pun intended) the "No True Scotsman fallacy" for secularism at 23:10 only because I have seen this call out used extensively by atheists when criticizing many theists. Is there even an code or a single primary source that most, let alone all secularists actually agree upon? I mean, secularism as a philosophy implicitly claims superiority over any and all religions, and what would prove that more than its institution eradicating all of them, no matter the means, whether via might or intellectually, so they no longer exist?
