Here is a question I pose to you. Actually it might be more than one, I am not sure yet. If there is supposed to be a God and he forgives anything someone sinned for, then does this mean he forgives a child molester? Does this mean he forgives a serial killer? If he does, then why would anyone want to spend eternity with God? If people like Charles Manson or Adolph Hitler or the Pastors and Priests who molest kids can spend eternity with God, then why would I ever want to be there? Christians often love to say x person or y person is burning in hell. I used to be one. I heard it all of the time. Tupac, Biggie, MLK, Jr., JFK, George Carlin, any and all scientists, atheists, comedians, anyone who believes in lgbtqia+ rights, anyone who is pro choice, anyone who listens to non-christian music or watches non-christian movies/TV shows, etc. Yet, they will claim God forgives anything from anyone. So, if my grandparents are burning in Hell, if by going to hell I get to hang out with George Carlin, James Earl Jones, Ghandi, Marilyn Monroe, Sir Isaac Newton, Tupac, J.R.R. Tolkien, the ancient Greek Philosophers, Divinci and some others who Christian Preachers, Pastors and Priests have claimed are burning in Hell, yet they in the same breath will claim that a child molester can be forgiven and enter Heaven, but the victims who might not believe in God will burn in Hell...why would any rational person believe that being in Heaven would be a good thing? My Grandfather not believing means he burns in hell? Yet the asshole who molested me can claim to be a Christian now and he gets heaven, where in the fucking hell is the Justice in that? I don't care if God would forgive him or not. I don't. I wouldn't want to spend one second in Heaven if that son of a bitch is there and the people I love and admire are in Hell. To me, I would want to be with my family. With my friends. It wouldn't matter to me what they believed or not. I want to be with them. Not anywhere near the place where someone did something I deem as unforgivable to me directly. Not anywhere near the place where people like Manson or Hitler would be because they may have said some prayers in the last few days of their lives. I would rather burn in hell with my family and friends and know who I am, have my memories of those people and be with them. Some people claim we won't remember who our friends and family were, we won't remember who did what to whom. In Hell, you remember, in Heaven you forget. Sure seems like a hell of a copout to me. I would rather have my memories of that were the case. I don't think heaven is a good place if I am spending it with people like Pat Robertson who made hundreds of millions of dollars not just from his believers and people who donated to the 700 Club, but from the Blood Diamond trade that used slave labor. Why would I want to believe in the same God as that guy? To be in the same place for all of eternity with him? I know you say you aren't a theologian. You don't have all of the answers. I do hope for one thing. That you consider this. The people who did the 9/11 attacks. They believed in God, they call him a different name because of a different language, but it is still the same God as Abraham. They killed over 3,000 people in the name of God. People who for the most part, had nothing to do with any beef with Al Queda and the US Government. Most of them were just hard working people. They didn't deserve that. Their families didn't deserve that. Yet it happened. All because of a book. Why should anyone die because they read the wrong book or believed in something different? It makes zero sense to me. Again. I propose these questions to you in hopes, that yes, you might answer some of them. Even the ones you can't answer, that you might think about the people who you love and have loved who passed away. Would you want to spend eternity with them or with Hitler? We can't know what was said in that bunker before Hitler and Brown committed suicide. If they got forgiven for what they did to 6 million Jewish people and 11 million people in total, and I wouldn't simply for not believing, that sounds pretty fucked up to me.

As a Pagan, there are people who say they will pray for me when they find out my beliefs. When they do, I simply say, "Thank you. And I will dance naked under the moon for you." Some are offended, others are not. I was raised in the Methodist Church and during my teen years is when I began questioning what I had been taught as a child. Books I had found, people I had talked to, news reports about certain "religious" leaders set me looking for more information. George's humor opened our eyes, hearts, and minds to look at things (all sorts of things/beliefs) from a different perspective. To question and think for ourselves about the things we had been told. To look back and see where those beliefs came from and how they had been shaped and reshaped over the centuries.

@@setonhillstudios Well, faith is a belief that is assumed without reason and defended against all reason. Understanding the big bang, etc. doesn't require faith, since it's a demonstrable fact. Although, the big bang is a misnomer, it was neither big nor a bang, it was the expansion of space and time itself. However, people seem to think that when Lawrence Krauss said "nothing" in "A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather than Nothing" he literally means nothing, when he doesn't. It's also possible that the universe has always existed and something called a "big crunch" happens at a certain point where things compressed back down into a single point. Having a hard time understanding how the universe could have formed outside "God" or something similar is an argument from personal incredulity. "I can't imagine what else it could be, therefor this." We don't know what initiated the formation of the universe and science will happily say "I don't know." They won't just fill in the blank with something that can't be demonstrated either.

I started watching him in single-digit ages. He's not just a comedian, he was a philosopher who made us laugh. Definitely watch more of his stuff! Edit: Don't worry, Steven... he'll get to those points. 12:10 - No, I'm not perfect.... but as I read in a book once.... "Perfection is a road, not a destination." Also, I like to think I'm a lot closer than a lot of people. 14:05 - Has it, though? What if... and follow me here.... what IF..... your prayer and the end result was already part of that "divine plan". I coined a phrase a long time ago that reads: "You may be thinking that you're challenging fate, but maybe you're just playing into its hands." Also, it's perfectly fine to "agree to disagree", as long as you're not condescending about it. I don't throw shade on anyone who has different beliefs than I do. My wife is a bit hardcore Christian, and I come off as an asshole because we don't share beliefs. But I respect her beliefs. That's the difference. As long as you aren't hurting anyone, I don't care what you believe. That's YOUR business, not mine.

Carlin was ahead of his time, he made people think. See, that's the thing, God does send people to hell, it's just convoluted, because he's all knowing, therefor anyone who is going to hell, he knew was going to hell before they were ever created. It's like Jigsaw in the Saw series saying he never murdered anyone, despite creating the situation by which they end up killing themselves. Gravity and wind are both measureable, regardless of whether you can see them with the naked eye, as we have 5 senses, we can feel them as well, and with various equipment, we can see them as well. Unlike God or any god for that matter, we can't see, feel, taste, touch, or smell no matter what we do. I forgot who said it first, but they said "sin is an imaginary disease created to sell an imaginary cure." Sin exists because God allowed it to exist, even if you try to rationalize the reason for its existence, God is the creator of everything, therefore he's directly responsible for everything that exists. Prayer has shown absolutely zero efficacy beyond random chance. Saying that God exists outside space and time, effectively states that God doesn't exist. lol Since everything that we can show actually exists is inside space and time.

@@stevencohen3925 Oh but without a "supreme being", as you put it, then morality is subject to what each one thinks is right. So, Mother Thresa's idea of good and bad is on an equal par with Hitler's idea of good and bad. One society murders Jews, and another society throws virgins in a volcano, and both believe what they are doing is moral, and right, and correct. Humanity has to have a higher standard of right and wrong, and a morality outside humanity. One simply cannot have morality, without God. It would simply be "situation morality", based on one's personal beliefs, and/or one country's laws. If it was up to humanity, and a majority vote, then a country could vote to execute all people with red hair, and that would be "moral" to them. Without God, one individual's opinion of morality would not necessarily be that of another person. It would just be an opinion, since both opinions would be "equal, and valid". True morality has to come from outside humanity, to be consistent.

No one (well, no one I know on the non-religious side) is offended by people of any faith having their beliefs. We respect that. The offense is taken when it is either 1) forced upon us or 2) used to promote hate. In case one you see it all the time with people talking about how we need to return God to the classrooms. This is pushed almost exclusively by Christians. If a Muslim teacher had his students do a call to prayer on Fridays, I doubt these same people would support and promote this. No, they’re just trying to indoctrinate innocent children into their own faith. It’s insidious and, frankly, since it’s an act against innocent children (who don’t necessarily have the free will, which you correctly argued about), it’s actually evil. Yes, we on the other side get offended. And on the hate side, yes, I do realize there are many in the Christian community, and I think, as someone who routinely views your channel, you are likely one, who do NOT espouse hate. But there are many who do. The anti-gay and anti-trans attitude. Many of faith argue that they’re not expressing hate; they’re just preaching what the Bible says. Well, they are certainly not expressing it in the compassionate and Christ-like way that the Bible would promote. I could get into an entire theological argument about whether or not the Bible is truly anti-gay in the first place. Most Christians think it’s obvious… Paul outright calls it an abomination. But context is everything. That’s a dubious passage to rely on for a whole multitude of reasons. Point is, it (the anti-gay sentiment) IS expressed hatefully by many of faith. Not just Christians, but also Muslims. And it’s not just anti-gay. For centuries religion, including Christianity (citing the passage about each to their own kind), has been used to support racism and even slavery. You and I may say that’s a bastardization of religion, but that’s not how it was perceived at the time. Many of faith viewed that as a perfectly reasonable interpretation of the scriptures. Heck, Loving vs Virginia was less than 100 years ago. For the majority of the existence of the Christian faith a huge percentage of believers used it to support racism. Even today, though they’re in a vast minority, some still do. There are still some folks in America who believe that interracial marriage is a sin. They may be a distinct minority now, but they still exist. Anyway, point is, those of us on the other side are offended by HATE not the faith you choose to follow. Bottom line: We (those of us on the other side of the fence) aren’t offended by your faith or your beliefs. We’re offended by the attempts (not by you, but by many within your faith) to jam it down our throats and the spread of hate and fear based on the faith. Again, this is NOT an attack on all within your faith. I believe you are not like this, and I have several wonderful Christian friends who follow a live and let live attitude. There are many, MANY beautiful people of faith out there. All I’m pointing out, is that there are also many who aren’t… and THAT is when the offense is taken. I just point this out for the distinction. You expressed multiple times… you were almost incredulous at people taking offense over other people having a different faith. I don’t know anyone who’s offended at people having a different faith. The offense is taken when the expressions of faith are harmful.

I kept watching, hearing your thoughts, and it seems to me, you somehow put people above or aside from the rest of nature, as something special? We are just another animal, who happens to have more cognitive abilities than other animals. But it is just random that we are alone at this point. Through time, there has been many species of humans on this planet, all off them have been here longer than us. What about them? There have been thousands of gods too, so who is right? What is the correct belief? At some point one must see that these are all ideas, nothing more, and the use it once had to control larger populations, is over. We need to move on from these fantasies, to grow. In my view. Islam seems to be the worst in our time, with the violence and such, but what we see now, in the middle east, well. I do think religion plays a very big role, and not for good. The bible is simply an edited text from a time of ignorance. Why would you pay any attention to it? And we can not count on something we have to believe. I would say, as Stephen Fry, if I met god. "How dare you"? Sorry. That was my rant 😁

Point two, I thought you seemed a bit defensive at times. Comedy is always about something that is physical, factual or cultural. It is also about shining light on an absurdity about something we all see. If that light hits you, you have to smile and act like you get it. If it shines on something you don't take personaal, you get to laugh, another squirms. A good comic makes each of us squirm, periodically. A Comedian who can make you 'laugh at', and also make you feel 'empathy for' during the same segment is a master. Geoge Carlin taught these masters.

@@setonhillstudios first off, the whole idea of matter arising from nothing is a severe miscalculation by the scientific community, one i do not share. No one knows how anything that far back got started, most likely possibility is that everything was collected into one object and as the last parts fell onto it, it caused the object to reach a critical density which started a shickwave that ripped the object apart spreading the matter outwards, like the big bang they have in their models. All energy has a particle associated with it so all energy is kinetic in the end. As for how special we are and such, think of it like this: we only have one chemistry and only one instance of that chemistry, any attempt to estimate the likelihood is terminally flawed because we have not worked out how it started in full. One critical element to that chemistry is phosphorus and its concentration is suggestive that the planet did not form with it but got dusted with it. Phosphorus is a supernovae product but the stars going supernova have to have a certain chemistry first. That means phosphorus is cosmically recent and that means the chemistry of life as we know it is only recently possible cosmically speaking. Getting any realistic answers anytime soon is unlikely when the ones that are supposef to be looking for thise answers are far too consumed by thoughts that do not logically track and they have many of such ideas. Is there things going on that are bizarre? Yes and i have seen one instanve of such. My dad and i spotted an ufo when i was under ten years old, we watched it until it vanished. The only things for certain about that object is that it made no noise we could hear, the sunset was behind it so we could not see its surface due to it being in the shadow side, it was flying, and when it vanished it was there one moment and the next moment it was completely gone. Anything else would be pure speculation but i have never seen anything like it since. Something is definitely up but so little information is available and you have far too many lying about events that are not the same for attention. The sum of what we do know is vastly dwarfed by the sum of what we do not know.

@@setonhillstudios at this point and time it would impossible to determine the ultimate origin of the matter, any evidence of that would be scrambled beyond recovery, there could be countless edits of the universe before ours or this could be the first ever edit, either way it would be a question we would never be able to answer. I listen a great deal always seeking knowledge and my mind is always processing. One thing that is mainly responsible for how i am is that i focus on facts, the kind anyone can find even if they do not want them, and the most basic mechanics of reality and then i work my way up as far as i can go, i find interesting things and ideas like that that differ from what everyone else holds dear. Does not always work out well when it comes to other people though, being used to being an outcast helps with that, less distractions but it also makes it next to impossible to engage in the types of things that are common for people.

@@setonhillstudios As I said, of course something can exist that cannot be seen, such as magnetism, gravity, the strong and weak nuclear forces. So if it does exist, then it has an effect that can be measured somehow. We can see on this world that life can exist in places that are absolutely deadly for us humans, not only for us but for many living things on this planet. Nevertheless, life exists in these places. We can then see that there are trillions of galaxies with trillions of stars. We have found exoplanets within the Milky Way and we can detect an exoplanet at 28 million light years (M51). Based on what we can observe, it can be assumed that solar systems are very common. Somewhere, on one of the countless planets, conditions could well exist that allow life to develop. The question is to what extent it is intelligent and whether, if it is intelligent, we will ever be able to communicate with it. Light travels quite slowly in space... But maybe there will be a solution to this problem at some point. The question for me is not whether God exists or not. No one can provide proof of one or the other. Why bother with a question that no one can answer definitively? The question is how we want to know what he wants. Every religion can only rely on ancient writings for this. That is what is actually believed in the end.

@@setonhillstudios Maybe I misunderstood you. Maybe by "life beyond Earth" you didn't mean life on other planets, but that something exists that we can't see or measure. Maybe it does. I don't necessarily believe that, but let's assume that it exists. What method would we use to make meaningful statements about it? Ask yourself what remains of a religion (no matter which one) without its respective (holy) scripture. For me, the logical error of all religions is precisely this problem. On the one hand, God is the unimaginable. But that doesn't stop religions from making very precise statements about the unimaginable. Religions provide precise ideas about something unimaginable. This even goes so far that they make detailed statements about when this person feels how and how he then reacts and decides. We often can't do that with people, but with an unimaginable being we know it for sure without any doubt.

You are correct: Carlin used theologically simplistic characerizations, cherry picking and strawmen to advance his bit. What he failed to understand or examine was his own religious/philosophical commitments and presuppositions. Clearly his audience lapped up what they wanted to hear and had little to no interest in critically thinking about their own worldview. Everyone is fundamentally religious with respect to their beliefs about ultimate questions of life. Carlin was no exception, much as he tried convincing his hearers otherwise.

in order to accept religion no evidence to prove that supernatural is even possible is needed. To accept religion just start with the belief and then you will be ready to accept anything. So, no supernatural anything has never been shown to exist. NEVER EVER. But that's ok because belief trumps fact. However, imagine you are in court -- charged with a serious crime. A crime that carries the death penalty. You know you are innocent. You have given your lawyer the facts to show that you are innocent. Will you then ask your lawyer to present the facts to prove you are not guilty ? Or will you ask your lawyer and maybe your pastor to just pray. Also if you are on a plane coming in to land and the pilot says that all engines have failed and a crash is very likely but all is ok because your pilot will pray for you. Also how many people do you know of have had a limb grow back thru prayer ? Finally, That 12 year old in the next town who is currently in bed firghtened by the sounds of footsteps approaching and the kid prays -- "please lord make him stop " But the kid is not saved. ( before you dismiss this senario check the statistics on the number of kids who are $e*ually assualed every day by a family member ).

I am more on the side of George Carlin's ideas. But I respect that you aren't judgemental and respect other people's beliefs. You're the type of religious person I like. I'm technically mirman, but not active. But one of the most caring and non judgemental people I know is my former bishop. He's not a bishop anymore and definitely not mine cuz I moved to another area. But even though my family was never active at all. He never once tried to get us to attend but was always there for my family. And actually still is. He paid for my wife's funeral from church funds. that passed away from an overdose on pain meds. Never judged. He helped when my mother and stepfather passed away to help me and my new wife get a new apartment cuz we were living with them with my disabled son. Then my son passed away at 27. He helped from his own pocket with what he could. And even recently helped my youngest daughter that has had hard times that has 2 children, out of his own pocket again. But I've seen other bishops in the area that will not help even if you do go to church or your not willing to go. So the way I look at it. Just be a good person. And he is one of the best people I've ever known. And he is still very religious. So I totally respect that you are and respect your beliefs, but love that you don't judge others beliefs. Keep up the great work. I love watching your content ❤😁

I’m an ex Christian and I tried to watch this. But your first interjection about “god doesn’t send people to hell” explanation is too triggering for me. The explanation you give is equivalent to a husband telling a wife she made him hit her by what SHE did/said. Or the “what was she wearing” argument. I’m so happy I’m no longer Christian and don’t have to deal with gaslighting.

Here's a thought about the subject of "belief" that I don't think can be refuted. On the question of believing in the existence of God, so many times I've heard devout Christians say " It's simple. All you have to do is believe". The problem with that is the fact that you can't believe what you don't believe. Here's the proof of that statement: Think of something you absolutely DO NOT believe. Now, try to believe that thing. You can't do it. The reverse is also true. Think of something you absolutely DO believe. Now, try to not believe it. You can't. The only thing that can change either of those two perspectives is for the person to have some sort of a deeply profound experience, the likes of which there is no alternative, reasonable, prosaic explanation. For example, if someone shows me a 2-legged chair and tells me it will magically hold me up without falling over if I sit on it, I won't believe it. But if I take a chance and sit on it and it does hold me up without it falling over, then I'll believe what they told me about it. But a key point about this that there can be no alternative scientific or commonly prosaic explanation for the fact that it holds me up without it falling over. If there is any sort of an alternative explanation then there is still room for doubt. In other words, perhaps there is, indeed, some prosaic explanation but that explanation simply hasn't yet been discovered.True "belief" has no room for doubt. There is no middle ground. It's a binary concept. It's either positive or negative. So that phrase "all you have to do is believe" needs a bit of an overhaul. I'm open to. being proven wrong. After all, I'm twice divorced. So clearly I've been wrong before. LOL (I enjoyed your reaction and your perspective, by the way.)

I was raised as a Babtist.I lived in the country, on a dirt road with 5 or 6 houses on it. When the Jehovas Witness would hit our road, the party line would ring and the first house would say...turn off your lights, the Jehovas are coming!" It was funny to see the street go datk almost instantly. One time my Dad said.... leave ours on. He answered the door with a bible in his hand. When they asked to talk about their beliefs, Dad said "I will listen to what you have to say if you'll listen to me. They left. To each their own I say '

I had some come to my house one day. I let them in, we chatted, I offered cold drinks. When one of them brought up that "there's no fossil showing a direct evolutionary link between species," I said, "sure there is--here's one", and showed them my reproduction of the famous Archeopteryx fossil showing transition from dinosaurs to birds. They left.

Great reaction, & great comment at the end 👍! The more I watch your reactions, the more I find you to be a great human being, with so much positivity, it feels really good to see you. Religion is obviously one of humankind's most important topics. It reminds me of an author I studied at university, English poet William Blake. He held faith in the highest esteem, but found that organised religion was the problem. And, indeed, many times in history has a clergy or another taken the side of evil. What are your thoughts on this ?

I was like Carlin, grew up in the Catholic religion, went to all the things they have, did all the things they did, & once I was old enough to come to grips with religion at 13 I knew it was BS & I was no longer a sinner & 45 yrs later after doing lots of research I have no regrets especially after a couple of 'incidents' in the early 70s! One thing about what Carlin says is that he cant be proven wrong! George was the greatest prophet that ever lived ✌💖☮
