@Bipolar Bear Oh ok, so you must also be skeptical of evolution by natural selection then right? Millions of different classes, geni, species, races, cultures all originating from bacteria? Humour too, literature, music, the study of science, knowledge of God - this all stems from single celled organisms right? Animals with equally fully formed and functioning eyeballs but some some have legs, others have wings and some have fins? Random mutations in birds and reptiles *just happened* to evolved the eyeball in exactly the same way? Ok so land animals have eyeballs because fish evolved into animals - even though fish still exist - but which fish evolved through natural selection by attempting to come ashore then suffocate and die? Is that not absurd? Perhaps you have more to to think about on this topic?

It was a good question. An answer would be that post-industrial revolution, Darwinian death-by-stupidity has been eradicated. Medicine and the welfare state have caused humanity to negatively evolve. Rather than survival of the fittest, society is clearly unfit, with fat ugly people having kids, and the least intelligent having large families. We will only have genetics of strength if the parents are gym goers, rather than people requiring day to day strength to survive. I foresee and think it’s already happened that human hands are evolving around the smartphone. Eyes evolving to focus at distance-to-phone screen. As for mating, that’s gone. Unnatural hair colours, tattoos and piercings, talking with croaky ‘vocal fry’...are aposematic. Then there’s dating apps, ivf, abortion. Reproduction will be thru websites, dna samples and surrogacy or even cloning. Then there’s porn and masturbatory gadgets and the normalisation of prostitution. Coming up is humanoid, part body and full-body silicone robotics. Domestically and in the workplace robotics (ie humanoid) hasn’t had as much impact as expected, as we just use single-purpose white goods or contract out the work cheaply. Eg dish-washer.

I haven't had a religious nut piss me off this much since Charlie Hebdo and its aftermath. Something that Christians need to know: 1. English Common Law and The US Constitution are not based on the Bible. If they don't believe this, they need to do a compare and contrast between laws set down in the Bible and the relevant documents. For Americans it's easy: 1st Commandment in The Decalogue: "I am the LORD thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before me." 1st Amendment to the US Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." 2. Marriage as a legal institution existed before the Bible and didn't originate in the Bible. 3. The Bible isn't a historical document; it's literature that uses heavily mythologized history as a basis for its fiction like the works of Homer. I recommend that anyone who doubts this read "The Bible Unearthed". It also give abundant examples of religious people obscuring history due to their religious assumptions about history. 4. The Bible isn't an original document. It has borrowed from every culture that its writers have been enslaved by, wandered through or attempted to convert. Easter and Christmas are based on earlier, pagan, holidays. 5. "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." Philip K. Dick. Humans are incapable of viewing reality objectively. The only reliable way of working around this is the scientific method. The "I grew up with this." and "This gives me happyfeelings." methods are significantly less reliable.

People of this era take the literal meanings of verses of scriptures and come to wrong conclusions about what god is. God is a mechanism that converts an idea into an action in seven stages. Atheism, Agnosticism, Deism, Humanism, Secularism, etc. Have one thing in common. They are all based on Manual / Voluntary force. The Manual force is controllable, small and transient. It de-links the activity executed with it from rest of the activities of life. Thus, it is ideally suited for violating the rules of the society. Thus, with this force you just create an illusion that you too are following rules.

The BBC’s The Big Questions. Is a dreadful “ethics” show that sits awkwardly positioned between the political discussion programs on a Sunday morning. In case you haven’t seen it, the format is basically Question Time, with an added audience It’s absolutely dreadful, arguably the worst thing that the BBC airs. It has production values you’d expect from an amateur You Tube video and is presented by Nicky Campbell, a man who displays no charisma whatsoever Both of those things feed into its complete lack of appeal, but are not in the final analysis the reason it’s so bad. What undermines the show is its total contempt for everyone and everything involved. First off, it’s called The Big Questions, and attempts, with the aid of a few invited guests and a panel of random members of the public, to answer genuinely serious matters of philosophy, politics and religion. This series, they asked “Can war ever be just?”. In the past they’ve discussed “Is there a Hell?” and “Is man’s dominion good for the planet?” The idea that issues of this magnitude can be discussed in soundbites by “the man in the street”, plus a panel of people fame hungry and desperate enough to go on TV early Sunday morning is ludicrous in itself. Frankly, I don’t want to hear the feminist comedian Kate Smurtwaite’s views on weighty, intellectual topics such as the existence of God. Even if they could get decent guests (which they can’t) you can’t get the same effect in twenty minutes with twenty people shouting over each other. Even more ridiculous, they’ll usually pack two topics in one episode, presumably because allowing more than twenty minutes of discussion of the same thing would make the audience’s brains explode. Proper, challenging intellectual discussion can be done in broadcast. Look at the 1940s BBC show The Brains Trust, where they invited in a panel of experts and - shock horror - just let them talk about big issues. I can’t say it would be improved by letting a celebrity chef interrupt them. In contrast, The Big Questions format is just terminally broken - answers to these points, by definition, are too big and complicated I - and you can’t articulate a complex, position in a 30-second soundbite. Every time someone is able to articulate a decent argument, Campbell just jumps in and cuts them off, and hands the mic to someone who will make a crazier, more televisual point. That takes me on to the second huge problem with the show. Often, the guests - especially the religious guests - are picked because they have “controversial” meaning completely mad views. The archetypal Big Questions exchange is some crazed street preacher claiming they can cure cancer through prayer, a confused scientist saying “No you can’t”, and then a female Coffee vicar or a rabbi with a nose piercing cutting across the two to say “Isn't the truth half way between these two places?”, and then the audience applauding. . The problem with this is twofold. First off, there’s the whole false equivalence between extreme and rational views, which is a problem with BBC debate more generally. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it makes religious people look unfairly crazy. In one of the supposedly flagship shows on religion, religious people are frequently represented by the absolute fringes. The vast bulk of people with religious faith in their lives are perfectly sensible and ordinary - you’d have to look long and hard to find a priest, vicar or imam who would recommend prayer alone to cure illnesses. The desire among the producers for “watchable controversy” makes the show completely unrepresentative and absurd So, in short, the only real big question The Big Questions asks is “How long can you air an utterly charmless, insulting show before everyone agrees to stop tuning in and turning off.

Historical value of the Bible? The nation comprised of its authors' descendants says the Bible has little, if any, historical value. That's your first clue right there.
@tamsinmccormick10 жыл бұрын
The bible's value is literary just like the Greek and Roman myths . And don't forget the Celtic and Norse myths . They all use the same devices and similar stories.
@equalitystateofmind541210 жыл бұрын
Tamsin Mc Cormick Plus, the Greeks and the Vikings had much cooler stories attached to their pantheons.
@tamsinmccormick10 жыл бұрын
Equals Four I don't know where I heard it but the Greek gods where people you could relate to because they exhibited HUMAN qualities and faults. They could get things wrong and apologise or give rewards for good deeds , they didn't know everything and couldn't be everywhere . But when you read the bible look to Richard Dawkins for the description of the Jewish/Christian god !!
@equalitystateofmind541210 жыл бұрын
Tamsin Mc Cormick True. Yahweh comes off exactly the same in character as Zeus and Hera, only lonelier and more childish.
@tamsinmccormick10 жыл бұрын
Equals Four The greek gods weren't so bad as they had wives and children so ordinary people could relate to them more easily.

Some christians in the U.S. have a similar agenda. Oklahoma State Rep., Republican Todd Russ, wants to limit marriage to christians: _Oklahoma State Rep. Todd Russ has a solution to the pesky problem of gays trying to get married: outlawing secular marriage altogether._ _Russ says he wants to "protect" court clerks from doing their jobs and providing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, which they've been legally able to do since October. Under his proposal, marriage certificates could be signed only by a religious official, who would then pass the certificate along to the clerk. Judges could no longer perform legal marriages._ _While couples who didn't have a religious official handy could still qualify for a common law marriage, this still means only church-sanctioned relationships could be legally, formally recognized._ _"Marriages are not supposed to be a government thing anyway," he said Wednesday._ _Russ, a credentialed Assemblies of God minister, is upset with rulings that have supported same-sex marriage._ - - www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2015/01/23/oklahoma-rep-proposes-dodging-marriage-equality-by-outlawing-secular-marriage-licenses/

Tamsin Mc Cormick I think that education is the key, especially teaching critical thinking from a very early age. Of course, that's why religious fundamentalists are against education and the teaching of critical thinking, so it's an uphill battle.

You aren't teaching people that their is no god, you just aren't teaching people their is a god. Teaching evolution is teaching fact, when people say it's just a theory it's ignorance. The scientific definition of theory is fact that can be altered due to new findings. Religion is a doctrine that teaches everyone not to believe other things while science is open to new ideas and is willing to change due to facts and research we find and do. Good day sir
